MEMORIES Rushlord High School Roshford MM -5-5971 THE VALLEY LEGEND 1987 Volume: LVU Editors: Danette Grimsrud Maureen McManimon Advisor: Shirley Grunsted We, the seniors of 1987, dedicate the 1987 Volley Legend to Warren Miller. Mr. Milter has devoted much time to this school as athletic director, guidance counselor, superintendent, principal, and teacher. Throughout his thirty -eight years here, Mr. Miller has been understanding, helpful and patient with all of us. As we are moving on to new horizons, so Is Mr. Miller. Congratulations on your retirement Mr. Miller, and best of luck to you. Kyle Pich Trodee Thorn Mark Welter This year, as in past years, the senior class sold candy in order to raise money for their senior class trip. The seniors decided on Orlando, Florida as their destination so each student had to sell $200 worth of profit of candy. Shown here are the senior class officers — Kim Thach, Secretary; Mara Bowen, Treasurer; Trodee Thorn, Vice-President; Shari Paulson, President — surrounded by candy. REMEMBER WHEN: . . . Kim Bunke was so enthralled with her popcorn that she ate a June-bug? ... we decorated the halls for Homecoming and got into trouble for writing on the lockers? . . . our sixth grade classes feuded over the best playground spot for softball? ... we had parent's day in fourth grade and we all sang R-A-G-G M-O-P-P, Ragg Mopp?! And waltzed with our dads? . . . the hottest day of the year always happened to land on track and field day? ... we went to Monkey Island on our fifth grade class trip? . . . we were first allowed to go to a high school dance? (Boy, we thought we were cool!) . . . Michelle Helleland was going with Heath . . . and Tim Halvorson . . . and Jon . . . and ... 7 ... us girls imitated those teachers at Maureen's Halloween slumber party? Weren't those jack-o-lanterns scary? ... we went on all those class hayrides and had volleyball games and campfires at Dave's place? ... we decorated for the awesomest prom ever? ... we beat Houston 7-6 and the girls invaded the guy's locker room? (Who could forget?) ... we graduated — from sixth grade? . . . Dan Bahn moved here and lightened up our senior problems class? THANKS NOW!! NINETEEN EIGHTY FALL HOMECOMING Attendants Dai in Magnuson Usa Halvorson Queen Kim Bunke King Heath Olstad Attendants Mark Welter Michelle Helleland Crownbearers JoNelle Bunke Jed Kinneberg Homecoming this year started out with the bonfire on Monday night rather than the traditional Thursday night. That way the royalty reigned throughout the whole week. Attendants Lisa, Michelle, Darin, and Mark helped Queen Kim and King Heath to rule the school. On Thursday everyone dressed like the kids in their parent's yearbooks. Even the teachers got involved! Cher Bunke and Mr. Svendson took the prizes that day. Friday, of course, was Spirit Day and the day for our traditional parade through town. The morning hours were spent painting and pounding and putting together our floats. Friday night was our miserable game against Houston. It rained on our half time show and Houston beat us 32-0. (We did get revenge later in the year though!) Despite the miserable, rainy night before, Saturday night's dance was a great success. The Student Council provided the decor and music and everyone provided the fun. It was the perfect ending to a great Homecoming week. We lost a few close matches in the beginning part of the season, which made it tough. However, the girls did not give up, and we played much better the second half of the year. We will lose only two seniors this year and our hopes are high for the up coming season. The Trojan football team finished the 1986-1987 football season with a record of eight wins and three losses, finishing second in the River Valley Conference and second in section IC. The highlight of the season was a seven-to-six fourth quarter victory over the Houston Hurricanes in the second game of the sectional playoffs. At the time, Houston was rated fifth in the state. This Trojan football team was the most successful in nearly a decade. It is hopeful that the unselfish dedication to the team by the upper classmen will serve as an example to future teams. 19 CANDID Shown here is a little glimpse of how students at RHS passed their time this fall. Football took up a lot of time, and the cheerleaders shown here will never forget the rainy Grand Meadow game, and neither will Darin, shown below. G.J. looks “happy as a lark after the Homecoming bonfire. So does Dana after the Houston football game. Maureen and Tim are shown here after participating in a whip cream fight following the game. Lester will be staying here in Rushford for about a year and a half (if he thought last winter was cold wait until next winter) with different host families. Lester enjoys basketball and track and is looking forward to participating in these events during the '87-'88 school year. We all wish you the best of luck Lester! Other than being awesome people and really moving up in the world, the freshmen guys have really hit it off with the senior girls. That's given the school something to talk about! This year many of the freshmen are involved in the senior high band which is quite a change for most. They are also preparing for those long hours of behind the wheel training to get their driver's licenses (so they can be big sophomores), and most importantly they are preparing themselves, mentally and physically, for the big move from junior high to senior high lunch hour! ROW THREE: Becky Bahn, Desiree Dubbs, Jennifer Oian. COACH DEAN SAYS The 1986-87 season was an exciting time. Rushford was known around the district as the team with speed. Our quickness helped us upset teams such as Chatfield and Grand Meadow. We also gave Caledonia and Harmony a good scare. Team records were either broken or tied in assists, steals, points, and rebounds. We will be losing four good seniors-Mara Bowen, Jamie Dahl, Michelle Johnson, and Shari Paulson. Each of them had a special quality which added to our team strength this year. Their leadership, spirit, loyalty, and experience will be missed. We wish you the best of luck. Seniors Heath Olstad, Darin Magnuson, and Mark Welter led a young inexperienced team. The team was characterized by solid man to man defense, outstanding perimeter shooting and a constant hustling attitude. Wins over Preston and Caledonia in the district tournament along with a third place finish in the Blooming Prairie Tourney highlighted the season. Five of Rushford's eight losses came from Houston and Stewartville, who were state rated teams. The Trojans are looking forward to next year as a fine B team looks to link up with returning starters Dana Grimsrud, Tim Dvorak, and Brent Hoiness along with this year's juniors Joey Highum and Jeff Bublitz. 45 GRAZIERS ROW ONE: Manager Mitch Gud-mundson, Paul Hanson, Jim Spartz, Brian Maddux, Brent Bunke, Mark Humble, Mark Hovland, Travis Eide, Scott Williams. Basketball players and football players goofing around at two of our fun-filled pepfests. This year's PepClub will best be remembered for its outstanding pepfests and colorful posters. Remember when we had an alien visitor come to our Halloween pep-fest before the last Grand Meadow football game? Or when the Senior guys dressed up as cheerleaders? Or the funny games that the Senior football players played? Or when all the basketball starters guessed that Shelly kissed them? Oh .......... good times at RHS. S8 This year, dazzling the crowd with brand-new routines, was the 1986-87 Drill Team. Members include: Maureen McMani-mon, Cher Bunke, Kim Thach, Renee Burwell, Elizabeth Lombard, Susan Nelson, Shari Paulson, Lisa Holland, Heather Spande, Lisa Halverson, Angela Carlson, and DeeDee Magnu-son. Not pictured Lori Rasmussen-Alternate. They 'wowwed' the crowd with routines to songs ranging from the Country-Rock hit Shakin ' to Bonjovi's You Give Love a Bad Name. Their new advisor, Cheryl Kjos, was very helpful and supportive of the girls. Being a dance instructor herself, she was able to give the girls tips to improve their performance. Keep up the great work, and keep smiling!! STUDENT COUNCIL This year's Ripples Staff included Kim Thach, Michelle Jeresek, Kris Mierau, Shari Paulson, Susan Nelson, Trodee Thorn, Brett Dailey, and Shelly Prudoehl. The staff met once a week during lunch hour to hand in articles and select topics for new ones. Brett Dailey acted as editor and was in charge of correcting and revising all articles. Once again the staff produced another edition of Christmas Ripples of which Kim Thach was editor. We appreciate all the hard work guys! This year our president was Michelle Helleland, vice-president Kim Bunke, and treasurer Sara Tweten. The rest of the members included Shelly Prudoehl, Stacy Rent-meester. Missy Hun-gerholt, Aaron Hun-gerholt, Kay Johnson, Melanie Wox-land, and Jon Nelson. Our main responsibility this year was Homecoming. We chose the theme and spent a day decorating the gym for the dance. This Christmas we purchased candy bars and handed them out to the whole high school. Every quarter we gave bowling chips to the people with perfect attendance. At the end of the year we gave four seniors $20 for 99% attendance in grades 7-12. We also gave David Schober a savings bond for winning the spelling bee. Thanks for a great year! 62 As in previous years, we began our school year by selling ads to local businesses. We held a week long contest to see who could sell the most ads. Netty and Reen were top sellers. Much to our dismay we were behind on all our deadlines, but we did finish the annual in early June.
