The low points of the season would be the loss of players due to injuries, and two tough losses to two good teams, like the 3 point loss to Chatfield (Sweden) and a 6-0 loss to Caledonia (Flee-Flicker). The best game we played in ’82 was Homecoming, beating Mabel-Canton 22-14. The Spring Grove game would have to be the “high”, but not dry, point of the season with our unbelievable comeback in the cold rain at Spring Grove. Down 20-6 at halftime the Trojans battled back for a 29-20 victory. A super way to end the season for the seniors, and a good way to head into the ’83 season! All-Conference Paula Kirchhof 1982 Volleyball We ended our volleyball season with a variety of emotions. We are sad and frustrated because our record was not indicative of what we were capable of doing. We were happy because we won some matches and we proved to ourselves that we are indeed winners. We are looking forward to next season with much enthusiasm as we will have a lot of young experienced players supporting the upcoming Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors who played varsity last year. 38 B-Team Row One: Theresa Wilke-meyer, Joell Dubbs, Kris Meirau, Michelle Benson. Regional Winner-State Participant 1982-83 Wrestling The Trojan Wrestling Team ended the season with a 3 and 7 dual meet record, including two wins over Root River rival, Houston. Leading the Trojans was senior heavyweight Dale Brand. Dale, who compiled a 28 and 3 record, had 17 falls, earned his second district championship, was second in the region, and went to the state tournament. Senior Tim Dahl placed second in the district, fourth in the region, and set a new team record for takedowns wrestling at 145 pounds. Freshman Rod Anderson chalked up 19 victories, third in the district, and fourth in the region at 98 pounds. Junior Jason Kjos was a steady performer at 119 points earning a region berth with a third place finish in the district. Other seniors graduating from this years squad include Tim Johnson at 126, and Kevin Feine at 132. B-Team Row One: Tim Anderson, Tim Brand, Terry Cook. All- Conference Jim LaCroix Young Trojans Record A 12-9 Season Despite injuries to key players for the bulk of the season, and playing with the youngest team (one senior, three juniors, and a freshman) on the court in many years, the Trojans still managed to scratch out a respectable 12-9 season record. Of the 21 games played in ’82-’83, only twelve were played with 6’3” senior Kendall Bakkum, the lone returning starter and all-conference pick the year before on the court. In the twelve games where the Trojans were at full strength, they fashioned a 9-3 record. One has to wonder what their season record would have been had they enjoyed an injury free season. Some of the Trojan highlights were: 1) The Trojans opening season win over tall Preston, 57-37, it was Preston’s first regular season loss in over a year. 2) Beating Region One Runner-Up Caledonia, 66-65, Rushford was the only team to beat Caledonia during the conference schedule. 3) Winning five in a row at the end of the season when Bakkum’s ankle injury finally healed up. 4) Beating the number two seeded Houston team in the district quarterfinals by the score of 44-42, and advancing to Rochester’s Mayo Civic Auditorium. B-Team Row One: Jon Bremseth, Bruce Darr, Dan Erickson, Steve Highum, David Smutzler, Steve Larson, Mike Peterson. All- Conference Angela Olstad and Janel Dahl. ■■ Trojan Girls Have Successful Season The 1982-83 Girls Basketball team had a successful season. They finished 3rd in the conference with a 7-3 record, and were 10-7 overall. The highlight of the season was a five game winning streak in January, which resulted in our team being ranked No. 10 in the area by the Winona Daily News. This team will lose two seniors, Janel Dahl and Caryn Humble, who cocaptained the team and did an excellent job leading the team throughout the season. I and the rest of the team wish them the best of luck in the future and know they will be successful if they continue to work as hard as they did for us. In Rushford I not only found a family, but also many friends. 1 enjoy going to your school and participating in your many extra-curricular activities. 1 think America is a great country and Rushford a great town. I enjoyed the beauty of your countryside and the hospitality of your people. Now it is time for me to go back home and plan for my future. This experience has helped to change the shape of my world. I hope you will extend the same courtesies that you extended to me to the future exchange students. Thank you for everything that you have done for me. Thank you. Goodbye. I’ll be back some day.
