Even though they managed to chalk up only one win these girls are true winners . Again and again, on and off the court, they demonstrated how truly special they really are. No one will be able to replace seniors Cindy Gaskin, Shari Huerkamp, and Sonia Kjos, but their examples of leadership, effort, and enthusiasm will always be remembered by their teammates. Also, other memories include a unique Parents Night, playing often with only four players, and the honorable Smurf Award . Next year's team promises to provide an interesting season — they'll make good things happen because they are winners . Good Luck!!! Valley 66 Rushford 45 Preston 70 RIVER VALLEY CONFERENCE CHAMPS The Rushford Trojans completed another fine season in 81-82, due mainly to the leadership supplied by seniors (Brent Heiden, Dave Lind, Steve Hungerholt, and Rod Darr) throughtout the season. Junior Kendall Bakkum the 5th starter, and Jimmy LaCroix, the 6th man, filled the roles well. Also, lettering for the Trojans were: Robbie Johnson, Calvin Olstad, and Scott Hoegh. Some highlights of the season would be the Trojan's 63-58 victory over state-rated Elgin-Millville, Rushford's 67-62 win over state-rated Peterson, and coming back from 19 points down to notch a win over Spring Valley, 78-66. Winneshiek 36 Rushford 23 Houston 34 Rushford 25 Harmony 44 Rushford 23 Grand Meadow 34 Rushford 59 LeRoy 24 Rushford 22 Houston 31 Rushford 6 Caledonia 52 Despite a 2-9 dual meet record, the young Rushford Wrestling team continued to improve its overall performance by scoring more points per meet and allowing fewer points then each of the previous two season. The Trojan squad was led by junior co-captains Dale Brand and Tim Dahl. Brand was district champion at 185 pounds and finished third in the region on his way to a 17-6 record. Dahl placed first at 138 pounds with a fall in the finals to give Rushford its first district Champions in 3 years. Senior Chuck Anderson earned honors for his never say die'' competetiveness, and sophomore heavyweight Vernon Meyers, a region qualifier, was the most improved wrestler. Other standouts from the Trojan squad included Kevin Feine, who finished the season with a 12-4 record before bowing out to a separated shoulder, and Dale Baker, who finished the season with a 9-8 mark. Loosing only two grapplers from this years squad provides high hopes for continued improvement with no less than ten returning lettermen. Many times they came so close to that elusive victory but were unable to clinch it. Experiences on and off the court will always bring back good memories (PAC, purple and orange, etc. ...). Seniors Shawn Becker, Sonia Kjos, Captin Cindy Magaard, and Dawn Norstad will be sorely missed next year. Hopefully, the RHS VB team will gain more success next year with the return of experienced underclassmen and the addition of some very enthusiastic ninth graders. Best of Luck! We made a lot of improvement as the year went along. Four of the teams that beat us went on to the State play-offs. Highlights of the season would have to be our strong finish beating a strong Spring Grove team(6-2) 20-12. The key word would have to be experience-we learned and are looking forward to the '82 season. I had mine a week before and said, If you want to come to mine — too bad, its over already. It was supposed to cause some laughter and also did; Dut also there was something about it that made me somehow start thinking whether people missed my open house or not. I didn't mind that much, I had a full house anyway. But, this applied to my whole AFS year 1981-82. It gave me almost a feeling of sadness. Especially about the last month of school, people suddenly seemed to wake up and become surprisingly interested. Also, I started to have more fun than ever before during the year and generally people came to me wishing we would have been good friends much sooner. Well, why not sooner? Maybe because I wasn't enough Americanized , maybe because of prejudices or too little openmindedness. Anyway, this shows for me again how life passes by faster than we think and that it's almost over before you really get aware of it. Also, it seems to me the year here went over too fast — at the time I was really well adjusted and knew a lot of people very well, I had to leave already. But, still — the whole year was a great and fun year for me and I can truly say I am very glad I could come to this town, which means so much for me. I'll probably never forget all this attention and privileges I've got here as an AFS student. Also I won't forget the people from here, to whom I really may be thankful.
