Defense was the theme for the 1978-79 Trojans. The Trojans limited their opponents to 1014 points (46.1 points per game - a new season record). The Rushford Girls Basketball season was a great success this past year. The girls tied for first place in the River Valley Conference race. Their conference record was 9 wins and 3 losses. The team had a record of eleven victories and seven losses. Doreen Jacobson and Brenda Johnson were named to the All-Conference Team. Other seniors making impro-tant contributions were Tracy Benson and Denise Jacobson. Five Juniors were also letter winners: Julie Carlson, Joan Carlson, Joyce Carlson, LeeAnn Volkman and Susie Lind. There were three Seniors, Two of which were returning lettermen, Bob Culhane and Jim Culhane. Jim did very well in shot put at the district level. Taking first place with a throw of 49’ 9% . While Bob did not have the good fortune that Jim did, it was through his encouragement and guidance the younger members of the team progressed. The third senior, Doug Marin, showed rapid progress as the season came to an end. Although this year's young team did not win any meets it showed great potential by making a good showing against some powerful older teams. She has captured the state title in the discus two years in a row. This year Brenda throw a 129 feet to win the state championship. 65 On Thursday May 24, 1979 the Family Life Class with students from Rushford, Peterson, and Houston had a wedding. This wedding was a little different because no man was married. They wanted the experience of planning a wedding, to see if they really knew how much planning it takes. They drew names out of a hat to see who would portray what part. They also served a lunch which the parents helped prepare. Their advisor is Mrs. Arnold who said the girls really enjoyed this and learned alot from it. The first of these being Helma Kirschner, who lived at the home of Wallace Helleland. Helma arrived at the end of August. She became very active in many activities. She joined the volleyball team, the track team, FHA, AFS and many others. Helma found it hard to adjust at first, but after she got the hang of it she said she really had a terrific year at RHS. The second student that we had the pleasure of having in our town this year, is Miguel Delva. He stayed at the home of John Karlson. He also became very active. He arrived to late in the year to make it for the football team, but the winter sports were still ahead. He joined the wrestling team, but an unfortunate accident in practice one night prevented him from participating. Miguel will be remembered as one crazy guy who was always full of life and I'm sure he will always remember our town as his home away from home.
