The Big O 33 Second Effort The Big D TROJANS Conference Champions The 1971 football team coached by Gaven Grob went undefeated to win the Root River Conference Championship! The team started off in fine style by defeating Chatfield 24-16 on the home field. They continued their unbeated way as they toppled Lancsboro 22-8 the following night at home. Then as conference play got under way the Trojans traveled to Spring Grove to demolish the Lions 66-0 in a game which found even our linemen scoring touchdowns! Homecoming 71 proved to be a real thriller! Due to the terrific team effort and tremendous will to win, the Trojans beat the Lancers 32-30 in the final minutes of play! Rushford kept its unbeaten pace as quarterback Bemt Benson threw' three touchdown passes to clobber Houston 38-6. A week later the Trojans notched another victory by walloping Peterson 46-0. With a perfect 6-0 record, Rushford traveled to Caledonia and before 2, 500 fans, the Trojans passing attack and rugged defense stunned the Warriors 24-6. On Wednesday night in front of a home towrn crowd the Trojans blanked Mabel-Canton 36-0 as they intercepted six passes and rode the rushing game of Randy Luhmann and throwing arm of Bernt Benson to their 8th consecutive win. In rain and mud, the Trojans w’ound up the Root River Conference season with a victory over Lewiston 28-8 to claim the loop crown with a perfect 7-0 record. Rushford advanced to the District One Play-off at Lanesboro Nov. 5, but the Burros came out on top 22-8, and for the Trojans it was a heartbreaker. With lettermen returning for the 72 gridiron season we hope the Conference title as a repeat and the District Championship a reality! 1971-72 CHEERLEADERS, TOP ROW: S. Austin, D. Laumb, S. Rushford also was the best defensive team in District One giving up only 50.1 points per game. But just as important as the records was the great team attitude and spirit exhibited by the entire team, and this is the one word that really sums up the 1971-72 season-TEAM. S. and especially those who were members of the Class of '72, will most certainly miss this year's foreign exchange student, Hans Person Hosar, from Norway. Throughout his stay here, Hans was kept busy collecting G , listening to records on Bob's stereo, studying, riding around in the '49 pick-up, being a temporary son to Doc and Mrs. Wilson, an active member of R. H. S., and a friend to all. Hans was in every way a credit to the A. F. S. program because he not only learned of our country, he taught us about his. The sun shone as the Commencement exercises in the High School Gymnasium began. The inspiring and personal speeches given by classmates, the final performances in the band and chorus, and the receiving of the diplomas made the program especially meaningful to each senior. After saying good-bye to their classmates, they left only to be greeted by friends and relatives at their home receptions. The thought finally occurred to them that they would never stand as a class again. The realization of Graduation Day brought mixed emotions to the graduating seniors, but everyone agreed that their high school years hold many wonderful memories. 72 June 4, 1972 RUSHFORD HIGH SCHOOL 1972 NINETIETH ANNUAL COMMENCEMENT High School Auditorium Sunday, June 4, 1972 at 2:00 P.
