Pam Overland Susan Veir Mrs. Pat Ferden Miss Mary Leonhart DEDICATION: 1970-1971 Over the past 12 years there were certain people who helped us. These people who have helped us most can’t be given enough appreciation, which we now realize as we take our final steps toward graduation. In kindergarten they started us out on the long road ahead. Through the elementary years we experienced many new things that will never be erased from our minds. We were then faced with the challenge of our last six years of high school. This challenge came and we were able to cope with it because of the help of these special people, our parents. So we, the Seniors of 1971, wish to dedicate this annual, the Valley Legend, to our parents for helping us through many years of joy and sorrow. They have helped us face tomorrow knowing we will never walk alone. Unveiling an explosive double-wing offense, the Trojans crushed the hapless Gophers 40 to 8. The following week at Lanesboro, the potent air attack tallied 34 points while the quickly developing defense shut out the Burros. In the conference opener at LaCrescent, the Trojans jumped to an early 6-0 lead, but the offense sputtered for the first time; and the Lancers handed the Trojans what was to be their only defeat of the season by a 24-6 count. Undaunted, the gutty Trojans bounced back to defeat Houston 16-6 in a hard-fought battle in the rain and mud. A week later the Trojans emerged victorious 14-6 in a classic defensive battle with arch rival Peterson. Homecoming ’70 proved a joyous occasion as the inspired Trojans shut out a very strong Caledonia team 8-0. The injury ridden Trojans relieved an old grudge the next week when they knocked off highly rated Mabel-Canton 14-6. A season ended as explosively as it had begun, as the unstoppable Trojan air attack spearheaded wins over Lewiston 34-9 and Spring Grove 48-0. All in all, it was a very successful season; and with 14 lettermen returning, the outlook for ’71 is just as bright. TROJANS CAPTAINS: Tom Berg, who led the team in assists and defensive points; Phil Anderson, who led in receptions and points scored; Mark Thompson, who led in total offense and interceptions and tossed 14 touchdown passes; and Allan Hoel, who led in tackles and determination, pose in a snowstorm with Coach Grob. Opening the season with 9 of the first 10 games on the road, the Trojans had a tough time getting untracked. After a convincing opening win over Lanesboro, the Trojans were up and down the rest of the year. In the conference the Trojans finished 3rd behind Houston and La Crescent with a 10-4 record. There were several high points however, including turning of Houston, their only conference defeat of the year, and a 69-62 win over La Crescent. In post season play the Trojans ran past Peterson 84-59 in the sub-district semifinal, but then were overwhelmed by explosive Houston in the finals. Houston-District ♦Conference game 64 GOLF: DISTRICT No. 1 CHAMPS The talent laden Trojan Golf Team finally realized its potential this past season by sweeping through the Root River Conference and District No. 1 with a 15-1 slate. After opening the season with a one stroke loss, the smooth swinging linksters reeled off 15 straight wins. Along the way the Trojans set a record low team score of 151 at Lansboro. In the conference race the Trojans easily outdistanced rival LaCrescent by sweeping all six meets. Individually Mark Thompson was 1st. in the conference point standing, while Brad Peterson finished third, Tom Berg 4th, and Jim Julsrud 6th. At the end of regular season play the Trojan linksters journeyed to Spring Valley and copped the District No. 1 crown by a 16 stroke margin. Mark Thompson, who finished 2nd., Tom Berg, Jim Julsrud, Brad Peterson, and Barry Johnson all qualified for the regional meet. A week later at Rochester Country Club, the Trojans played poorly but still salvaged a 3rd place finish. Above: Jim (Big Boy) Julsrud sets up. Left: Putting wizard Tom Berg takes aim.
