1970 VALLEY LEGEND Volume XL Rushford High School Rushford Minnesota Editors Clark Anderson9 Jacki Bunke9 Mary Jo Miller THIS WE 2 REMEMBER 3 Dedic Coach Jeresek Two years ago, a successful young basketball player entered the teaching and coaching staff of Rushford High School. In two short years we, at R.H.S., have found that, for this man, success is not a goal hopefully to be reached in the future; it is a way of life. As a basketball coach, he has fielded two teams, neither having highly outstanding natural talent; yet with hard work and determination by both coach and team, both teams were striking successes. We cannot help but feel that a great part of this success was due to the pride, dedication and devotion you, as a coach, instilled in your teams. As a teacher, you have shown great interest in our school and have greatly advanced and updated our physical education program. As an individual, you have taken a concerned interest in us as students and helped us have pride, discipline, and respect. For these reasons we dedicate this annual to you, Mr. Jeresek. 4 ntion 70 Coach Grob Mr. Grob, for four years, we at Rushford High have known you as coach, teacher and friend. As a coach you have been successful in many more ways than just won-lost records. You have had many teams; but whether the team was one of great success or failure, you stood by us, helping us all along. Through the long, hot hours of work at practice, you always cared—cared often times more than we ourselves did. And in addition to all this, you took interest in us as individuals and we grew to know you as a friend as well as our coach. As a teacher you took an interest in your classes and had a concerned interest in our education as students. Yet somehow you always managed to find some time for fun, too. Without a doubt, R.H.S. would not have been as nice a place for the past four years without you. As an individual you have been friend as well as teacher to most of us, and you have understood us as students and friends as well as anyone possibly could. For these reasons it is possible that without knowing you we would not be what we now are; thus, to you we dedicate this annual. Trojans Open Strong For the first time in four years the Trojans started the season with a victory. With a fine team effort, the Trojans secured a hard-fought 14-6 victory over a strong Chatfield team. The next week against Lanesboro. the Trojans encountered a fired-up Burro team who who moved the ball quickly in for a score in the opening minutes of the game. The Trojans then rallied to the cause and once again a team effort enabled them to move the ball in for a score to tie the game in the first half. Then in the second half linebacker Daryl Rustad’s return of an intercepted pass for a touchdown secured the Trojan’s their second victory in a row, by a score of 18-14. In their next game the Trojans more than met their match, and were soundly beaten by a strong La Crescent team by the score of 30-6. With strong will power and determination. the team came back strongly and enjoyed a 48-6 romp over Houston. The next four games proved to be a series of heartbreakers for the Trojan team. In an excellently fought football game, a fine Trojan defense held a highly favored Peterson team scoreless for 46 minutes only to have their hopes of victory extinguished by a 20 yard touchdown pass with two minutes remaining, giving Peterson an 8-0 victory. At Caledonia the following week, once again a fine Trojan defense held off a strong Warrior team, this time only to be forced into a 0-0 tie. In the next two contests, last minute touchdowns spelled defeat at the hands of Mabel-Canton and Lewiston; the latter game being played in a sea of mud under a constant downpour. The Trojans came back, however, in the season finale to trounce Spring Grove 46-16. With much experience gained, the large group of returning lettermen promise a better season to come. How Things Went After an opening loss to Winona Cotter, the Rushford Trojans revealed their mighty power when they blew a visiting Lanesboro team off the court by a 104-59 score in their second contest of the season. As conference play opened the next week, the Trojans suffered their second defeat at the hands of a scrappy LaCrescent team by the close score of 81-78. Undaunted, our team bounced back and routed Spring Grove by a score of 104-51. This victory was to start an eight-game conference winning streak that included a nine-point victory over a tough Caledonia team, a thrilling two-point victory over conference favorite Peterson and an 82-67 revenge victory over LaCrescent. At this point in the season the Trojans held first place in the conference standings; however, in the final 1 3 of the season were defeats at the hands of Caledonia and Peterson and a finish in a second place tie with Caledonia. In District play, the Trojans finished third by winning two, losing the semi-final, and finally closing the season with a victory over Peterson. This year's team almost made the .500 mark with a season’s record of 6 wins and 7 losses. Mr. Casagrande, in his first year as coach at Rushford, brought the team from its last year’s record of two wins and eleven losses to the 6-7 record. The team made a great improvement this year and it will improve more in following years. The two seniors on our team. Dean Fritz and Clark Anderson, had two of the best individual records. Clark Anderson had an 8-3-2 record for the best individual record and a 72.7% winning season. Dean Fritz had a 69.2% winning season with a record of 9-4. Sophomore Davis Hovland also had a 9-4 record. Junior Darrell Volkman was close behind with a 7-4 seasonal record. Gale Evenson had a 7-6 record and Randy Luhmann was 6-5. Our season began with a powerful win over Grand Meadow. Then our boys dropped four matches in a row. Five teams in a row then fell victim to our squad. The final three matches were lost.
