The 1969 Valley Legend Volume XXXIX Rushford, Minnesota DEDICATION The Class of 1969 wishes to honor you for all the things, tangible and intangible that you have done for R.H.S. You have been a teacher that is never too busy to help students or confer with them. Also, you have shown us the warm and wonderful side of a teacher. For this we thank-you, Mrs. Julsrud. 2 Homecoming 1968 began in a blaze of activity ... The traditional bonfire started the ’68 Homecoming weekend off. UP UP AND AWAY It was a big night for Amy as she was chosen to reign as queen over the 1968 Homecoming. King Jerry and Queen Amy share a special moment. 1 wonder what they’re wishing? 4 Seniors snap up a victory with first Juniors show everyone what they need! Sharon Overland, emcee for Thursday nights events, announced the result of the homecoming election. Chosen to reign as king and queen of the 1968 homecoming festivities was Queen Amy Otis and King Jerry Bunke. The attendants were Diane Kopperud and Mike Miller; Nancy Boyum and Calvin Dascher. Friday afternoon the homecoming parade, consisting of floats made by classes and headed by the Rushford band, began the second day of homecoming events. A pep rally was held after the parade in preparation for Friday nights game with Lewiston and the results of the float judging were announced. Capturing first place with their float was the seniors. Juniors took second; and the FFA float, third. Friday night the Rushford football team, playing on the new football field, played a hard game tieing the Lewiston Cardinals 6-6. Bringing to a close this year’s homecoming activities was the dance in RHS gym on Saturday night. The Tom Lee Orchestra provided the musical entertainment and made Home- , , , - . These members of the Board of Education have the necessary foresight which enables the school to be the efficient organization that it is. The many duties include; recruiting programs, financial matters, improving high school welfare, promoting school status and public relations. These men are the backbone of our high school. ADMINISTRATION AT WORK FOR US. Superintendent Mr. Evans compares notes with his secretary, Mrs. Elvira Berg. Mr. Evans is never too busy to confer with students and keeps their best interest in mind. Although at times we did not agree with him, we respected his judgment and valued his advice. Our school is also fortunate to have Mrs. Berg for secretary. She is efficient and is always willing to extend help to students and teachers. 10 All Done: Mrs. Anderson hands a finished copy to Mr. Nelson. Miss Lautnb, elementary principal, pauses from her busy day to look at a book. Every morning greets Mr. Nelson with a line of students waiting to get make-up slips. Sounds like fun as Mr. Nelson explains to seniors about their trip to Washington, D. C. n Here’s one that you’ll find interesting......Mr. Miller, our counselor, stands ready to guide you to a brighter future. Mr. Warren Miller is R.H.S. student counselor. His primary function is to assist the individual student with educational, vocational, and personal problems as they arise. Mr. Miller is also concerned with getting part-time employment for students. His efforts result in making the student feel more secure at school. ROAD TO GUIDANCE Jo-Dee H. and Joel H. look for information on colleges, jobs, and branches of the armed service. Test scores!!! In your senior year test scores play an important part. Here Mr. Miller explains results to Mike B. and What next? Mike B. checks out possible opportunities for GregP. after school. 12 Bus Drivers ... on the outside looking in are Wayne Wenzel, Arvin Overby, Ray Jaar, Orville Leutke, “Red” Christopher-son, Melvin James, Merlin Hungerholt, Marvin Manion, Joe Jonsgaard, and Odin Bratland. THEY KEEP OUR SCHOOL GOING The Personnel workers of R.H.S. make the students feel like they are at home away form home. Without them the school wouldn’t run as smoothly and be as friendly as it is. The duties of these persons run a long more months of school. Their loyalty brings them in sleet, snow and rain. They add that special something to our school. Cooks . . . preparing dinners are Gusta Highum, Ethel Howe, Hazel Olstad, and Viola Overland. Taking time out for a coffee break are Odin Bratland and Joe Jonsgaard. Custodians .... Relaxing from the many duties they perform are Ray Jaar, Odin Bratland, Joe Jonsgaard, Melvin James, and Wayne Wenzel. 13 STUDENTS After being pushed into a comer, Susie is still happy to be home as she gives us a big smile to prove it. Tile feminine part of the Assuda family. This is the school, Colegio Coracao Eucaristico de Jesus, that Susie went to in Recife, Brazil. She wore uniforms and only attended half days! A family picture of the Assudas includes her Mother, Father, her brother Richardo, 19, her sister Regina, 16, and their dog. Kite. Susie and her Dad wrestle for an intertube. One of her favorite pastimes was swimming. 16 AMERICANS ABROAD 1968-69, was an exciting year for Valencia Peterson and Susan Post. They were chosen as A.F.S. students representing Rushford in Australia and Brazil. Susan, chosen January 17, 1968, was a guest at the As-suda house in Recife, Brazil and Valencia chosen January 12, 1968, became a member of the Thomas A. Lamb family at Brisbane Queensland in Australia. American Field Service is an organization which for over 20 years has been providing scholarships so that students from other countries spend a year in the U.S. By meaningful involvement in a U.S. family, school and community, the student may gain an understanding of the United States, its people, educational system, customs and ideals, and spread this understanding among his family and friends after he returns home. Americans Abroad, a more recent program, involving summer programs of two months, over winter programs of a year, accomplish the sincere purpose of acquainting our students with countries abroad. While on a visit to Currumbin Bird Sanctuary of the South Coast of Queensland, Valencia makes friends with a kangaroo. Valencia and her family give a send off to Carolyn who left for Sidney. Pictured are Carolyn, Dad (Lamb), Mum, Valencia, and Janet. Finding a few minutes to relax, Valencia enjoys listening to records. u Valencia fits right into the family circle. Pictured are Janet, Valencia, Carolyn, and her Mum. 17 A TORCH OF FRIENDSHIP During Mary’s stay in Rushford, she stayed with the Edwin Nelson family. Standing are Mr. and Mrs. Nelson, seated is Debbie and Mary, also their dog Scooter. Kathy is not pictured. Come on Debra .... On Mary’s first day here for school she seems anxious as she leads the way in. Rushford High School has been honored with the presence of Mary Turner, our foreign exchange student, who came to us from Brisbane, England. Mary, we want to thank you for your cheerful co-operation, but most of all, thank you for being with us because we the senior class sincerely enjoyed having you as a fellow classmate. May God bless you and guide you in whatever you choose to do. For an enjoyable evening at home Debbie and Mary play with an Ouija Board. 18 On arriving at school in the morning, Mary stacks her books in her arms and heads for class. A DAY WITH MARY One of Mary’s favorite pastimes has become sewing. She does a lot of it!! 1 During one of Mary’s free hours, she visits an elementary grade to earn points for F. T. A... Work or pleasure? Mary joins in helping build our first prize homecoming float, the big green turtle. 19 THE Unto you we came. We fell under the spell of your spirit that was to guide us for the years we were to spend with you. We learned the exultation of victory and the desolation of defeat. These, you taught us to accept with dignity, and you prepared us for new challenges on a day that will come. May our deeds add lustre and honor to your name. Although the Trojans failed in their attempts to be conference champs, they proved that spirit, coupled with ability and good coaching, can generate a fine gridiron season. The football season started on a sour note when Rush-ford suffered a 14 to 0 loss to Chatfield’s Gophers. In the next three games the composite score stood: Rushford 67, opponents 0. Shutout victories over Lanesboro, Houston, and a strong Peterson team were compiled in this string. The next game was a heartbreaker, Rushford losing to Caledonia by one point, 7 to 6. This seemed to be the turning point of the season for after that game the Trojans could do no better than win two while losing and tying one each. The wins came against LaCrescent and Spring Grove, the tie against Lewiston, and the loss to Mabel-Canton. J. Bunke and C. Dascher, all-conference selections, and R. Feine and J. Hoiland, second team all-conference, were the leaders of the team which proved once again that the Trojans were one of the powers of the Root River Conference. 56 SEASON’S RECORD WE’RE GLAD THEY WERE ON OUR SIDE ... (Courtesy of Winona Daily News). TOURNAMENT ACTION ... (Right) Mark P. and Jack O. pressure an opponent while (Below) Jerry B. and Mike M. are doing the same. (Photos by Rochester Post-Bulletin) After graduating four starters from last year’s squad, Rushford was supposed to sit on the sidelines and watch the other teams fight over the conference and district championships. However, first year coach Mike Jeresek taught the players how to fast break and play defense and this, aided by the players’ determination and willingness to work enabled the Trojans to capture the conference title. Finishing with a 10 and 2 conference record and 15 and 3 overall, the Trojans were one of the favorites in the district tournament. After beating Wykoff, Lanesboro, and Preston, Rushford faced Spring Valley, a team the Trojans had earlier beaten, for the district championship. Hopes were high, but the Trojans suffered from poor shooting and Spring Valley triumphed by a 59-51 count. In coming to Rushford, Coach Jeresek has brought a new type of basketball with him. Instead of playing the conventional zone defense and slow ballgame, he employs a tight man-to-man full court press and a fast-breaking offense. This year Mike M., Mark P., and Ken B. put the press defense on the opponents and Jerry B. and Jack 0. triggered the fast break by rebounding well. Subs Larry 0., Bill H., and Mark T. did a fine job while letting the regulars rest. Look for fine basketball teams in the future as Coach Jeresek knows how to make use of the talent that ‘B’ team coach Gavin Grob is developing. ss TENACIOUS TROJANS ... Jack O’Donnell, Mike Ander- Coach Jeresek, Mark Thompson, Don Nordby, Mark Peterson, Bill Haugen, Ken Benson, Darrell Eide, Phil Anderson, son, Jerry Bunke, and Mike Miller. TALENTED ‘B’ TEAMERS ... Coach Grob has brought the ‘B’ Team far this year. When at first faced with inexperienced players, he taught them how to play aggressive basketball. These boys possess desire and good shots and will surely help the varsity in the future. First Row: Dave Overland, Brad Peterson, Dean McCluskey, Rod Livdahl, and Phil Hellerud. Darrell Volkman, Duane Meyer, Jim Hellerud, Mike Kil- WRESTLING The Trojan wrestlers were quite disappointed with the way their season turned out. Several of our boys had enough wrestling skill to earn themselves a placing in the district tournament. A couple of these wrestlers were of good enough quality to advance to the region. The sad part of it is that not one of our Trojan wrestlers even earned a top 4 placing for their weight class. Perhaps, there is one single reason for their failure to show their skill. Rushford’s student body never showed any backing for their wrestlers. Therefore, the grapplers aren’t instilled with a determination or a desire to win. The majority of all the factors which make a winner is determination. Three of our wrestlers were able to win most of their matches in spite of the fact that the student body didn’t care. These wrestlers were: Joel Hovland, Darrell Volkman, and Davis Hovland. Duane Meyer, Jim Hellerud, and Clark Anderson turned in about a fifty percent season for their team. The results of Rushfords matches are as follows: Rushford 21 Spring Valley 27 Rushford 16 Houston 32 Rushford 10 Caledonia 43 Rushford 36 Grand Meadow 15 Rushford 7 Harmony 44 Rushford 21 Chatfield 31 Rushford 7 LaCrescent 41 Rushford 35 Spring Grove 25 Rushford 0 Leroy 48 Rushford 19 Lewiston 29 Rushford 25 Preston 26 This season’s captain is Joel Hovland. 60 B SQUAD ...
