FRESHMEN CLASS HISTORY When we, the graduating class of 1958, first entered high school in our freshmen year, it was a new and exciting experience. For the first time we were allowed to take part in the senior high activities. Of course, being a freshman had its trying moments such as initiation. Our first responsibility as freshmen was to sponsor a return party for the sophomores. Our theme for this party was Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White. As sophomores, we had the privilege of initiating the freshmen. This was our chance to get revenge. We certainly won't forget that night because there was a snow storm. The year 1956-57 found us Juniors with a great deal of work to do. We selected our class rings and planned our homecoming float, which won first prize. This money was added to the treasury to finance the banquet and prom. We also sold beanies, sweat shirts, and forget-me-nots. With the help of Mrs. Julsrud and Mr. Nelson, and our mothers we presented the Star Dust banquet and prom. We certainly appreciated the help we received. The year 57-58 has finally brought us our last year at Rushford High. Our most important duty this year was to produce the VALLEY LEGEND. Under the direction of Mr. Karlson the senior play. Are Teachers Human?, was given. This was also the year to exchange class pictures and send out graduation announcements. The senior skip day was also a most different and thrilling experience. As we look back, we realize we have had many happy and wonderful moments at Rushford High School. Front Row L. To R.s Mrs. L. ANNUAL STAFF The VALLEY LEGEND was produced by the Senior Class of 1958. e sponsored two record dances, sold pencils, and sold group pictures to raise money for additional pages. The staff worked during study halls, noons, and after school in an effort to meet the deadlines. Mr. Hedstrom, representative of the American Yearbook Company, visited us at frequent intervals and gave helpful suggestions and checked on the progress of the annual. This year we trained three juniors for next years top positions. The co-editors and staff hope you enjoy this book of memories as much as they enjoyed bringing it to you. The Co-editors and Advisor proofread the annual before sending it to press. The Assistant Editors comparing past annuals. Business Manager—J. Dahle Art Editor—S. Magelssen Head typist—M. It is governed by the editorial board of eight associate editors with the editor in chief as the chairman or moderator of the group. This board decides the policies of the paper and plans each week's paper plus the extra editions of the Ripples. Each year a Christmas Edition and an Easter Edition is edited besides the regular weekly paper. At the end of the year the board elects the editor in chief for the next year. They also elect four new associate editors to take the place of the departing senior members. Thus the board is organized and ready to meet the responsibilities of the next year. The first performance usually scheduled for the chorus is the concert in the fall. This year, however, instead of giving this concert, the chorus sang a few numbers at the ceremonies held in honor of dedicating the new school building. After the dedication program, the chorus began vrork toward presenting a Christmas program. The senior high chorus and junior high chorus presented part of the program and the elementary grades the other part. The chorus spent most of the winter months practicing for the spring music contest and the spring concert. The final performances for the school year are the bacalaureate and graduation exercises. FIRST The Rushford band started the school year playing at the football games and marching in the homecoming parade. Juniors received their band pins at the annual fall concert. Band members took part in the dedication ceremonies of the new addition to the school. Band Officials Looking At Oar Newest Trophy Each loyal basketball fan round the band ready to entertain them during the games. After much practice and rehearsal, the spring concert was given for the public. This was the last concert for the senior members. The final test of the band's achievements was the group and individual contests in the spring. When the seniors gave up their positions in the band, final preparations were made for the baccalaureate and graduation exercises. At the end of the school year the band made an appearance at the Memorial Day services and were looking forward to the summer concerts. SCALES, SCALES, SCALESJ Miller, K. Miller, S. Kinneberg, L. The girls work together to improve themselves, their family, their school, and their community. Business meetings are held twice a month and a social gathering once a month. The group took care of the concession stand at baseball and football games to earn money. This year the girls had a basket social and invited their dads. Each Christmas the F.H.A. packs baskets for needy families. The highlight of the year is the state convention. The four fortunate girls who are chosen to attend come back with many new ideas on how to improve their F.H.A. chapter. One of the girls from our chapter, Maurine Quale, had the privilege of holding the office of state treasurer this past year. The F.H.A. officers and advisor are very proud of their emblem. FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA The Future Farmers of America is a non-profit, non-political nation wide organization for young men who are interested in farming. During the summer, tours are scheduled for members of the F.F.A. to look at the enterprises of different fanners. In the fall of the year the F.F.A. members begin practicing for contests held on land judging, poultry, general livestock, cow clipping, dairy, crops, and dairy. F.F.A. members organized a basketball team this year and scheduled games with neighboring chapters. The major event of the year is the annual convention which is held in St. Paul. The poultry team attended this convention because of the high rating they received at the district contest. The chapter ends the year with a banquet. On Thursday morning we were quite surprised to discover that someone had beat us to the burning of the bonfire, but with much vigor and enthusiasm the seventh and eighth grades rebuilt it. That night our homecoming royalty was announced. After a short pep rally the snake dance began. On Friday afternoon the student body paraded down town, and we had a pep fest at which time the float winners were announced. That night we beat Spring Grove .12-0. The game half time show was very colorful and interesting. Following the game, a dance was held in the school auditorium. The first event was the crowning of the royalty. We were quite honored to have as our disc Jockey, Itty Bitty Buddy Ron. He helped make the homecoming festivities a success. SMILE PRETTY QUEEN ROBERTA KING HARLEY BANQUET SPEAKER MR. G. TIMM JUNIOR-SENIOR PROM DID YOU BRING YOUR MANNERS? The annual all night junior-senior banquet and prom was held on May 11. At 6:00 p.a. the banquet room was filled to capacity. With the help of the Juniors' mothers, a very delicious meal was served. A former teacher at Rushford, Gerald Timn, was our guest speaker. At 8:30 the prom began to the music of Larry Ziemann's orchestra playing Star Dust. After a complete three hours of dancing among the stars we changed clothes and went to a movie. Prom here, we were driven in buses to the golf course for an early morning snack served by the Commer -cial Club, ------- so ended the 1957 Prom. SNAPSHOTS WATCH THOSE WAISTLINES!!? BUSY TEACHERS???
