The band made its first public appearance at the annual Christmas program. After the holidays, the band began to prepare for its annual spring concert and the Allegany County Musical Fes- tival. Five members of the band were chosen for the All-Allegany County Band. On May 19 the annual Spring Concert was given for the pleasure of the community. Generous comments upon the concert attest to the zeal of these young musicians in performing with enthusiasm the various selections. CENTRAL CHATTER The Central Chatter is the service club of the school which enables those students who are interested in the various phases of journalism peculiar to a mimeographed news- paper to gain some knowledge of the call of the fourth estate. Printer's ink is more technically, inthe case of Tho Central Chatter mimeograph ink, but the newspaper still re- tains the hustle and bustle of any journalistic endeavor. In order to stimulate interest in the school newsnaper, junior and senior members of the staff are entitled to attend the Empire State School Press Association Convention in Syracuse in the fall of the year. At this convention all phases of high school news- paper production aro discussed. This year, in conjunction with the Li- brary Club, the staff of Tho Central Chatter, on an educational trip visited Eastman House, Eastman Kodak Company and a movie in Roch- ester. Also, pin awards are given to those members who have worked conscientiously for two years on the staff. Pin guards are given to those seniors vh o have completed the third year of such work. A certificate of merit is given each member who has satisfactorily completed one year of work. HIGH SCHOOL CHORUS The first appearance of the High School Girls' Chorus was at th® time of the Senior play in the fall. At Christmas time, the girls sang Christmas carols for the school program. Five members of the group were selected for the All-County chorus which sang in Wellsville early in April. After rather intensive prac- tice, the Chorus went to Andover on May 7 for the Genesee Valley Music Festival where their work was received with commendations. Closely following this, came the all school musical program in May with the chorus participating as a whole and some members individually as soloists and as instrumentalists. The final appearance of the Chorus was at Baccalaureate Service on June 20. JUNIOR PLAY On April 9 The Case of t he Sulky Girl by Erie Stanley Gardner was solved on our stage by the Juniors. Departing from the comedies, a straight detective story was offered. This play met with interesting success which was flattering to the pro- ducers insofar as a similar production may be done again. EIGHTTT GRADE PLAY '.Vlldcat V lllle in the Dog House by Martens was presented as a part ox the graduation program of the Eighth Grade. The story concerns Willie's misunderstand- ing with his teacher. His classmates rally to his rescue and 'rillle triumphs over the traditional enemy. GRADE PLAYS The grades were also active during the year in presenting plays for assembly programs. The first grade enacted Cind- erella s Reception, the third grade did the Hires' thanksgiving. The fourth grade wrote andplayed the story of The Princess Who Couldn1t Cr£. For entertainment on the night of Open House, the fourth, fifth and sixth grades presented an operetta entitled The Enchanted Attic. FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA Rushford Chapter of the Future Farmers of America participated in a formal initiation conducted by the 3elfast Chapter, FFA, Junior members received their official jackets as usual. This year two from Rushford, Leo Owens and Douglas L'ilmot, were presented to be can- didates for Empire State Farmers which is the highest decree that can be obtained in the organization. Neither was accepted but it is a credit to the chapter that two members were worthy of presentation. Social activities included a donkey basket ball game and a square dance. They render assistance in charging and shelving books, and helping fellow pupils secure reading materials. Some members also assist in typing book cards, checking shelves and working with small children during their scheduled periods. This year, the club has sponsored three book exhibits—during National Book Week, for a PTA program, and for Parents' Night. At Christmas in conjunction wlth the FHA and PTA, the club packed cheer boxes for the sick and shut-ins of the community. For its annual excursion, the Club joined with Central Chatter staff and made a tour of Eastman Kodak in Rochester. The overall record of the team was fourteen wins and one tic. That tie was with Belfast 0-0. Previously Rushford had beaten Belfast 19-2. The RCS team was well balanced in scoring on the front line. The halfbacks who usually do not score too often, but set up many goals, deserve credit in vic- tory. The fullbacks and the goalie liave the thankless jobs of stopping the opposing team's scoring threat. The team had a good defensive record with an average of about one point per gamo scored against them. The team also had a good bench which helps to win games. An unprecedented spirit to win the championship brought the cup to Rushford this year. However, the team found itself in the first league game against Fillmore and there had its best shooting percentage of the year which was well over 50 per cent. After that game, it was an up and down season, playing very well in some games and not so well in others. About mid-way in the season for the Junior Varsity, chances to win the county championship seemed to be very slim after losing three games in a row. However, since not is all that it seems, the team came back strong to win the next four league games placing, in a three way tie with Friendship and Angelica, for first honors. The Vol- leyball team won the County Championship; the badminton teams reached the semifinals, and the table tennis teams showed good promise with their meager experience.
