RUSHFORD ACADEMY 1852-1667 RUSHFORD UNION FREE GRADED SCHOOL 1867-1901 RUSHFORD HIGH SCHOOL 1901-1936 RUSHFORD CENTRAL SCHOOL 1936-1952 - I: THE CRESCENT salutes the 100th year of organ- ized education in the Rushford district. Before 1852, schools were built in the area as they were needed. Many tines, private homes had to give up rooms in which school could be held while the log school house was being built. As early as I8I4.9, there was a growing demand for an institution whero the young men and women of the town should obtain a higher education than that furnished by the common school, and the com- munity as a whole decided that there could bo no better paying investment ftian to establish a school for that purpose, by which their own children and the children of the adjoining towns might profit. Accordingly, sufficient funds wore raised by sub- scription to erect the Academy, which building was standing at the time of centralization. During the autumn of 1852 the Academy was opened for student having boon properly charted by the state in Feb- ruary of the same year. The first Board of Trustcos consisted of the following people: B, T, Hapgood, President; Robert Norton: Dr, William McCall; William Morryficld, Washington White, Oliver D. Benjamin, Titus Bart- lett, Isaac Stone, John G, Osborn,Israel Thompson, James Gordon, 2nd; Charles Benjamin, John Holmes, Sampson Hardy, William Gordon, Alonza H, Damon, The faculty of the first school consisted of Ira Sayles, Principal; W, W. Bean, Assistant; Miss Frances Post, Assistant; Mrs, S.C. Sayles, Teacher in French; Miss Aurora Bailoy, Teacher in Music; Miss M, B, B, Sayles, Teacher Primary Department, Tho Academy drew its students from tho large area surrounding Rushford and the first year saw threo hundred and throe eager students in the old Academy, Rushford is proud of its heritage. : ■ £
