SENIOR PROPHECY 1949 226 Let us climb into our Atomic Rocket which will take us thirteen years into the future. Zoom! We are off! . , ' We shall see some of our old classmates whom we haven't seen for many years. The first we see are Ray Brackett and Frances Lee, who are now Mr. and Mrs. Ray Brackett. They live on Washington Street in Shelby, N. C., where Ray is the sheriff of Cleveland County. Next, we see Glenn Powell who is foreman of Mr. Moore's farm on highway 150 near Boiling Springs. He is still flirting with every new girl that comes along. V Shirley Woodall is the girls' basketball coach for Gardner-Webb. The girls lost another game to Mars Hill last night. Let us hope they win the next one. Harold Walker, better known as "Red", is now an engineer for the Duke Power Company . As we all know Albert Hamrick wanted to be a private secretary. She finished college and got a job with a private detective in New York. I think they finally got married. That's what that kind of work will do for you. Pete McCraw, who once said, "I'll get a diploma or quit!" finally quit after thirteen years of bad luck in senior English. Now he's driving a pick-up for the state. Max Harris is a nominee for governor of North Carolina on a Democratic ticket. Marjorie Blanton is choir director for the First Church in Winston-Salem. Ima Jean Hamrick and Hazel Spake had their wishes granted and have become models for several large concerns in New York. Wayne Earls is driving a bus for one of the several large bus lines in Boiling Springs. Izener Huffman made an 'athletic director for Polkville. He is making good showing in the basketball tournament at the armory. Conway Goode is agrciulture teacher at Lattimare. I Rachel Ann Lemons is now teaching second year French at Gardner-Webb. One reason she is so in- terested in French is that her boy friend lives in France. Johnnie Mae Hammett and Evelyn Hester are good housewives, or so their husbands say. Grace Hawkins is skating instructor at the Boiling Springs Skating Rink. She gets a thrill out of teaching boys how to skate. Some of the boys will never learn to skate because they like Grace's teaching too well. Joe Dean Ledbetter has a good farm south of Boiling Springs where he has settled down. Billy Walker, who loved make-up, especially when it was on girls, got a job as make-up artist with Twen- tieth Century Fox. Doris Martin is running her own beauty parlor in Charlotte. I think Paul Rogers landed a contract with some studio in Hollywood as an actor, Paul likes his oc- cupation. Helen LaNier, who was very good in English in high school, got a job as an English teacher somewhere in Virginia. And me, well, I'm just the pilot of this rocket which we are riding on. CLASS HISTORY 225 Our high school education was four years away in '4S. We had begun our work with 52 fellow students. Miss Dorothy Sue Hamrick was our Home Room Teacher. The Class event of the year was a weiner roast and skating party. We thought our boys made an excellent record by winning the class Basketball tournament. The Class of '47 had the loss of 10 members. We had a picnic that year. Miss Dorothy Sue Hamrick, our home room teacher, went with us. ' The 10th grade boys won the class Basketball tournament. In 1948 the class lost 20 more students and gained 1 which made us 3 total of 33 members . We honored the Senior Class with a banquet that year. The theme for the Banquet was "In Fair Hawaii." It was given April 21, 1948, at the Hotel Charles in Shelby, North Carolina. The Juniors got 3, great pleasure out of giving the banquet. We wish t0 thank Miss Dorothy Sue Ham- rick in giving the banquet and for being our home room teacher in '46, '47, '48. We ordered our rings in '48 and the Junior play was also given entitled "Three Old Maid Aunts." The boys kept up the good work and won the grade tournament again. The class of 1949 has Mrs. Unie Hamrick for our home room teacher. She will also direct the Senior play. Our membership this year is 24. At the beginning of this year we received our class rings. They carried the tradtional emblem which is the torch. We are looking forward to the Banquet given in our honor by the Junior Class. But most important of all we are looking forward to graduation day, after that we will go to join the vast and happy throng of B. S. H. S. Alumni. ' RACHEL ANN LEMONS, Class Historian. .e"" "N I
