4 The 1987-88 Redskin Staff respectfully dedicates the yearbook to the entire student body of the Rush Springs School. While the annual staff compiled the memories for this book we could not overlook any area of our school. The strength of our school is the student body. Fach individual accomplishment, group activity, special performances, team effort, organization and classroom achievement make the Rush Springs school one that everyone can be proud of. Behind every victorious achievement is an un- derlying current of spirit generated from the student body. It is you the student body of Rush Springs who created ... THE BEST OF TIMES The Rush Springs High Student Council made every effort possible to make 1987-88 a successful year for the student body Activities began in Sep ternber with campaigning and election for offices. Shane Hudson was elected President and Patrick McKay Vice President. Missy Schwarz. Melissa Wil hams, Oaryn Brantley, and Stephanie Alfred were elected as Student Council officers. In October we were busy with Homecoming and decorating the halls for Halloween. We sponsored a float contest. The Freshmen won with their version of King Kong. The annual blood drive was held on November 6 There were 60 donors. The blood was distributed to area hospitals Christmas time created lots of ac tivities for the members We sold Christmas candles and stocking holders We also decorated the halls in expectation of Santa Claus The theme for Basketball Homecoming was Hawaii in Rush Springs The Student Council worked hard to build the scenery We made volcanoes and palm trees. In February, we decorated the halls for Valentine's Day A meeting was held to discuss our financial situation We talked about several fund raisers. In March we held our second blood drive. We are pleased to say that it was as successful as the first one We hope that the people who really need the blood get it A basketball game between the students and the faculty was the mam event in April. It was quite surprising to see the hidden talent of our teachers Plans for a football game are m the making for next year The Wild Eunch “ring rcns,! King Kong presented an Oscar winning perfor- mance as the Freshman class float took first place in the 1987-88 Homecoming parade. Their creativity, and enthusiasm worked together for the winning com- bination and top honors in the parade The Senior class portrayed Charlie Brown and the Great Pumpkin. The Sophomore class Haunted us with Nightmare on Fagle Street, while the sound of wailing cries from Mummies.' the Junior class float, assured us of a Redskin victory. During the months of September and October, the Juniors and Seniors put on their version of Oklanornar. They worked long hard hours memorizing lines, learning choreography, and practicing songs. They had rehearsals four or five days a week (depending on the moods of Mrs. Landrum and Mrs. Brady) that ranged from 2 to 3 hours. It was a lot of hard work but when the curtain opened for Act I. everyone agreed that it was definitely worth all the effort. Many sacrifices were made in order to attend rehearsals. Among these were skipping supper, foregoing dates with boyfriends and girlfriends, and missing football games on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Even though they gave a lot. they got a lot in return. The warm and wonderful memories of the time spent working with friends will remain with them for a long time to come. We learned about family cus- toms and the work hierarchy, as well as learning the art of origami (Japanese paper folding). During the fall we had several lessons in critical thinking. Topics studied include mathematical logic and analogies. Another lesson dealt with the various types of intelligence and how they relate to everyday living. In November, we attended the play Arsenic and Old Lace starring Maureen Stapleton and Marion Ross. Another field trip was made in February to the Engineering Fair and Kirkpatrick Center. Most of the spring semester was devoted to research papers and academic meet preparation. In addition to these projects, students have been responsible for outside readings, which they sum- marize and classify according to novel type. it's been a busy year fitting all these projects into a regular school year! 1988 REDSRIN RAMPAGE iedskins to Host T vO Ulass in Photography Has Been Teams in Added to RS School j rriculuii 3ere Satur 1av ' S class in photography was curriculum at Rush The Rush Springs 'ill host teams fro nd Snyder in iis Sati’- ’ iap a ated. Although its beginning has been small in number of students, the photography class has had no small impact on campus activities. The members of the class have been involved in many photographic assignments to satisfy classroom assignments and to help raise money for the addition of a new darkroom which has been constructed by Mr. Roy Jennings and the CVET classes in the old gym. Some of the assignments included sports action; the Community Christmas portraits; Old Settler's Day photos; Children's Halloween pictures with Mickey Mouse; Homecoming parade and events; Annual Staff assignments and many more special assignments. Each of these assignments serves to meet the requirements of the formal photography class. In addition to these the students are required to do special photographic and darkroom assignments as directed learning activities. The course includes such areas of photography as the proper use of cameras and their accessories; Composition; Lighting; Black and White Darkroom techniques of developing, printing, enlarging, portraiture sports or action photography. Scenic photography and many other special techniques. Tammy Pittman Sheila Brown Sherri Smelley Middle School Conor Societ Mr Morns McKay, Mary Peddycoart. Redskins finished the year with 7 wins and 4 losses in 1987. The Redskins started fast this season by winning five straight. Playing excellent defense the last four games of the year the Redskins finished the season on a good note. The play-off game at Fairfax was a bitter defeat but it was a plus for our overall program. Our team played very well at Fairfax. Our players had an excellent at- titude on the playing field all season. This will help in 1988 as the Red- skins moved into Class AA football. Our players and coaches believe that we can play and win in Class AA. We are excited about the upcoming 1988 season. Our six seniors — Michael Fulton, Jeff Steun, Mark Young, Chris Den- nis, Mike Trusty, and Shane Hudson were all good team leaders and will be missed in 1988. With the graduation of eleven seniors, the Lady Redskins faced a rebuilding year and many new faces were seen on this year's squad. Even though it was considered a rebuilding year, the team finished the year with 16 wins and 10 losses, another District championship, the runnerup in the tough Grady County Conference, and a good showing in play-off action, losing in the Regional finals to Elmore City. Coach Landrum said, Of the 10 losses that we had, they were to very good basketball teams. Four of those losses came from the number 1 and 2 teams in the state, and the other 6 were to ranked teams in 3-A, 2-A, and A. Losses to quality teams make you a better team. I felt we made great improvement through the year and that our returning players will be vastly improved. Five seniors will graduate from this year’s squad: Mary Ballard, Tiffany Burges, Michelle Fitzgerald, Sharon Rhynes, and Karie Wenzel. Their absence will be felt next season. Their compiled record over past years has been 149 wins to 36 losses.. In the fall they began doing concrete work, building driveways for Mr. McAdoo and Mrs. Beard. They also poured a large area of concrete between the middle school and the bus loading zone. They did some remodeling and general fix up for the Beards and Mr. Jennings. After the severe storm hit Rush Springs in the fall, the CVET students worked diligently to pick up tree limbs and debris over town. Before Christmas they began work on the new photography classroom in the old gym. They also did some cabinet work for Mr. and Mrs. Jack Porter. Another project was to build a beauty shop for Liz Norton. The class stayed very busy throughout the year. Each project exposed the students to new skills; including construction, ma- sonry, electrical work and plumbing. All of these skills will be beneficial to each student.
