Student Council The student council has attempted this year to create an environment of spirit and participation. To achieve this goal, many various activities have been planned. The first semester saw floats in the homecoming parade, clowns and strange people during the Halloween celebration. Who could forget Mr. McAdoo’s 50th birthday party? Christmas was a special time too, with all the decorations in the halls and on lockers. The second semester plans are for a big Valentine’s Day, a skit show, and maybe a Spring Olympics. We will strive in the future to improve our council by using this year as a time to test new ideas and boldly go where no student council has gone before. 7 SPIRIT REIGNS Through the Years was the theme for our 1986 Homecoming. Each class spent the week secretively constructing a float worthy of competition. The Freshman class chose the 1800's, reliving a Wild, Wild West scene. The Juniors stepped into the 50 s with their interpretation of the afternoon hangout. They were seen doing their version of the famous 50's Stroll.” The Seniors brought the 1980's into the limelight with the fashions and personalities popular for this era. The winning float was represented by the Sophomore class. The Roaring 20's brought to life Mary Pickford, Will Rogers, and Charlie Chaplain. THROUGH THE YEARS Redskins Look a little closer at the special things which make us more than Red, Black, and White. We’re individual peo- ple with that extra edge. Each are different, yet alike in our own ways bound together by R.S.H.S. Are Always A Sfep Ahead •fc m it A D M I N I 9 T R A T I 0 N On behalf of your faculty and many hundreds of people, may I say that our efforts will be justified if you have developed pride as an individual and a determination to apply your particular talents toward the establishment of a good home and community. Your combined efforts will determine the nature of the society in which you will live. To the Seniors, our sincere congratulations. We hope we have given you the academic fundamentals and correct personal incen- tives and pride to help you achieve a worthwhile future. To underclassmen, take advantage of every minute possible to prepare for a society that is becoming more technical, more com- plex, and more demanding each year. CATCH THE SPIRIT OF EXCELLENCE. Sincerely yours, Mike McElroy, Superintendent Mike McElroy Superintendent BOARD OF EDUCATION L-R: Johnny Morrow, Clerk; Eddie Rathbun. Vice President; Conn Goodwin. Member; Mike McElroy. Superintendent; Bill Pate. Member: Frank Peterman, President. Dear Students; It will not be long before each of you will be members of the community, looking back on the years spent at Rush Springs High School. When you do, the pictures and memories in this book will be your stepping stones to a happy reminiscence. Capture the Spirit of 1987, and let it be a positive force as you prepare to be produc- tive citizens. May your memories of Rush Springs High School be pleasant ones, and may your future be filled with happiness and success. Sincerely, Ken McAdoo, H.S. This spirit is found in athletics as well as in the classroom, and other activities. Devoted parents en- courage their children to strive academically. They drive their young athletes to the games through rain, sleet, snow, and the middle of winter. These parents would set in the stadiums and the freezing weather to watch their children participate. They are striving to instill in their children devotion to their responsibilities and goals in life. This attitude encourages young people to perform and be productive students. CATCH THE SPIRIT! Get involved with your children and their future. Sincerely, YSfc? . ‘■'A'rtty Morris McKay Middle School Principal M.8. The 1986 Rush Springs High School Redskins finished strong by winning their last three games. The Redskins finished (5-5) for the season. Playing in District 5-A, the Red- skins played a very tough schedule. Six Seniors, Scott Hayes, John David Laing, C. J. Smith, Darrin Edwards, Earl Parnell, and Gary Hayes provided the leadership for the Redskins in 1986. The Redskins will return thirty-two lettermen for the 1987 season. Sixteen starters will be back for the Redskins. We were a very young football team this season. All in all, our kids worked hard and played with good effort most of the year. We are looking forward to a big year in 1987 with so many returning starters and lettermen. A special thanks to Kevin Harper and his group of student helpers and Coach Landrum, Coach McAdoo, and Coach Foster for another outstanding job of coaching. Thanks also to the band, cheerleaders, faculty, our fans, and the parents for their support during our 1986 season. HIGH HOMECOMING Eric Baily and Amanda Garner The 1986 Junior High Football Homecoming was held October 28. The Redskins’ opponents were the Minco Bulldogs. The highlight of the evening was the announcement of the queen Brooke Brown and captain Tim Beard. Little Mr. and Miss Rush Springs Kyle McKay and Natalie Fitzpatric. were on hand to present the roses and the crown. WE REPRESENT THE Cheerleader tryouts were held in April. Those chosen were: Lori Savage, Jerri McClenny, Mary Good, Tina Lavey, Linda Latham, Stacie McClenny, and Melissa Williams. Immediately, we began training for camp. Practicing every day anywhere from 2 to 3 hours for about 2% months, we were ready. This year, we weren’t only going to camp to learn new material, we were going to WIN!!! We won all blue ribbons except one red. Along with 60 other squads, we were in intense daily competition for the Spirit Stick. All our efforts paid off when we were announced winners of the award Thursday night and Friday morning. Now, the Spirit Stick is a symbol of enthusiasm and pride of our cheerleading squad as we lead the student body. Saturday, Nov. 8th, we went to the Ward Mall in Duncan for a cheerleading competition. We were evaluated on jumps, technique, and voice. Out of all the area squads, we placed third. We'd like to thank Darlene Dryden and Kathy Cloud for their hard work and support in helping us make this year a great success. OUR SPIRIT STICK! 80 REDSKINS FROM R Reigning State Champs Enjoy Victorious Season The 1986-87 Lady Redskin basketball team finished this season with a 24-3, one game short of a trip to the State Tournament, as their season ended in the Area Finals in Lawton. The defending State Champions just weren't play- ing up to par when the final week of the season hit. In finishing 24-3, they won the Black Diamond, Grady County Conference, District, and Regional Championships. Eleven outstanding seniors will be lost to graduation from this squad. These girls have accumulated a record of 70 wins and 15 losses through their illustrious careers and won the only State Championship in the history of girls basket- ball at Rush Springs. Several of the girls will go on and fur- ther their educations as a result of basketball as they have received basketball scholarships. They have helped build a rich basketball tradition, one that should last for years to come. The High School Cheerleaders and the High School Student Council helped perform this activity. Stacie Mc- Clenny played the part as “Jolly Old St. Nick,” she brought with her Rudolf and three other reindeer. They were Lori Savage, Melissa Williams, Jerri Mc- Clenny, and Mary Good. Little Mr. and Mrs. Rush Springs were her two little elves. Smile pretty Janna. John David LOVES to read REDSKINS BUILD DEPTH WHILE MEETING A CHALLENGING YEAR Things just didn't click for the young Redskin squad, but this didn't keep the team from trying to improve their skills, and keep the team spirit alive. The first half of the season looked dismal with only 2 victories going into the annual Black Diamond Classic. The Redskins had a rough time in the Grady County Tournament, falling first to Union City, 54-52, and then losing the battle with New Castle, 52-47. However, an exciting, revenge victory over the Union City Tigers, 54-47 sparked the team s enthusiasm winning four more games before becoming the 1987 District Champions. This big win gave us an opportunity to play top ranked Carnegie in the Regional play. Being defeated didn t stop the young Redskins. They bounced back surprising a good Empire team with a 54-48 double OT victory. The 1986-87 season was definitely a challenging year. Of the many opponents the Red- skins faced, seven of those teams were top ranked in Oklahoma. Two of these being No. 1 Elmore City and No. 3 Cement both State Champions of Oklahoma. The team appreciates the fine efforts from our seniors: Scott Hayes, Gary Hayes and John David Laing. These young men displayed good individual and team effort throughout their career. HIGH MIDDLE SCHOOL CHEERLEADERS Last April 12 girls were selected to serve as cheerleaders for the Redskin Jr. High and Middle School teams. The girls' responsibilities included long hours of practice, providing their own funds for all expenses, making signs and spirit banners, performing at pep rallies, and assisting with all Jr. High nomecoming festivities. During the summer of 1986, Deana Nichols, Nikki Laughlin, and Laneal Keel attended the World Cheerleader Council Camp at Weatherford for five days. While at camp, they learned several new cheers, a dance routine, and the proper techniques of cheerleading. Camp competition was both strenuous and exciting. The RSJHS squad was awarded two ribbons of outstanding performance and one ribbon of excellence. Even though there were only three members of our squad at camp, they were one of the eight squads chosen to receive the WCC Pep Paddle. TO THE On December 8. 1986. Friend Coach Coach Joe Tunnel The 1987 yearbook is respectfully dedicated to Mr. Joe Tunnell because of his outstanding contribution to the sports program here at Tush Springs. Coach Joe Tunnell is a graduate of Rush Springs High School and East Central State University where he played football. Mr. Tunnell is no stranger to athletic success. His contribution to this area of education is well documented not only in Oklahoma, but nation wide. He won his first game in 1959 and in 1985 against Comanche gained his 200th win, a feat only a few coaches in Oklahoma have ever experienced. Among those being the 1966 State Championship for the Rush Spring Redskins. His record now stands at 211 wins; 85 losses, and 6 ties. Coach Tunnell has completed 27 years devoted to education and coaching. He has demonstrated attributes essential to individual success by dedicating himself to developing young minds and bodies into athletes. It takes a special person to earn the honor, respect and confidence of young people and we think Coach Tunnell is that special person. JUNIOR 4-H CLUB JUNIOR OFFICERS OFFICERS — Pres.
