Mr. Nelson has been on the faculty for eight years as coach, Junior High Social Studies teacher, and Physical Education teacher. He has shown interest in the students and has led our fighting athletic teams to victory on many occasions. We are proud of Mr. Nelson's fine coaching during the '56-'57 seasons in football and basketball, especially in basketball where the team won the conference title and was nosed out of the district title. Congratulations, Mr. Nelson, we wish you the best of luckin future years as a coach and a teacher. 2 GENE ANDERSON CLIFF BEHRENDT DARLENE CARLSON DICK DANIELSON BILL FERGUSON RICHARD FRIDAY EUGENE LAWRENCE ANDERSON, Gene 5 Parents: Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Anderson 5 Clarinet Quartet 1,2,3,45 Boys Octet 1,2,3,45 Choir 1,2,3,45 Band 1,2,3,45 Annual 3,45 A11 Star Band 35 All Star Choir 2,35 45 FFA 1,2,3,45 Poultry Judging Team 1,2,3,45 FTA 2,3545 Audio Visual Aid 1,2,3,45 Drama 3,4. Some of us were happy and gay, some were sad and crying. Our teacher, Miss Grettum, finally brought us under control and got us through our first day of school. During the year, Johnnie Winges and Gerald Grote joined our class. Miss Poegel met us as we entered second grade. Judy Giddings came during the year. Miss Poegal tried to teach us writing and arithmetic. Remember those hard addition and subtraction problems? Some of us found another use for the cloak room that year. In the third grade, our teacher was Miss Baker. Marlen Holmberg and Warren Nelson entered our happy family that year. Arithmetic was becoming even harder: 2 x 2 and 3 x 3, now we were one -fourth of the way through school. Will we make it the rest of the way? Miss Hruby and Miss Hammerstrand were our teachers in the fourth grade. Our new students 's year were Diane Nessel, Roger Lutroe, Leon Kruse, Bill Ferguson. This year our class was ded. My, how we cried to be away from our friends for a whole day. Miss Brask and Miss Underland were our teachers in fifth grade. Jay Gamble entered our class this year. This year we learned about our foreign neighbors and are they neighborly! In sixth grade our teachers were Miss Underland and Mrs. Palbicki. Our class couples this year were Sheila and Jack, and Marie and Paul. This year we learned about our Minnesota Govern- ment. Richard Friday, Gary Miller, and Jack Youngstrom joined our class this year. Our seventh year was a big year for us, we didn't know what to do. Those lockers really pre- sented a problem with combinations to remember, but we made it through anyway. Margaret Lindstrom, LeRoy Shinler, William Peno, and Ronnie Johnson joined our first year of Junior High. In eighth grade we were just getting into the routine of changing classes and getting out ofthe routine of locking lockers. This year Yvonne West, Joyce Oscarson, Julia Rand, Dennis Louden, and Bob Hesslund joined our happy class this year. Remember straddling the board walk over to the History Room in the Chippawa School House. Some were unfortunate and didn't make it over without getting wet. Ninth grade was another busy year. Remember Big Six? The GAJ club was also started this year. Learning how to put on tourniquets, Miss Grundset, the Health teacher, somehow got tied up. Do any of you girls know anything about it? Tenth grade was the year we were considered as Senior High. We were in charge of the Courtesy Ball this year. Remember the fun we had carrying outour theme, fashions, and the colors, pink and black. Glenda VanAlstine joined us this year. We made eleventh grade, only two years left. This was the year we put on the Banquet. Re- member how we wanted a prom, but no go. The Banquet was a success though. This year we presented our Class Play after the snow storm. The play was A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court . We finally made it to our last year. We are the upperclassmen now. We, of all Seniors, had to have a rainy skip day. This year our class play was A Double Barrelled Detective Story , which was a success. Forty-five Seniors marched to Pomp and Circumstance on May 27. Some of us were happy and gay, and some were sad and crying. Those who went through twelve years at RCI-IS are: Eugene Anderson, Darlene Carlson, Gor- don Goebel, Helen Grote, Gerald Grote, Sheila Froelke, Marie Froelke, JoAnn Hertenstein, Jay Gamble, Douglas Johnson, Patricia Karas, George LaBelle, Darlene Larson, Harvey Lind, Richard Olson, Betty Schweigert, Sharon Scott, Arnold Uhlig, Rollin Whittaker, Delbert Stanton, John Winges. 12 I 'w CLASS FLIRTS - Jo and Harv ELVIS - George , . They had an lm- pressive array of Iettermen b a ck , but tough breaks hurt them. In their pre-season scrimmages against Hinckley, Chisago City, and Cambridge,Rum River champs, the Tigers ran wild. After the season got underway, the Tigers had several key injuries and hopes of a title dimmed. Braham provided little opposition, but the Tigers ran into a roughie when Minnehaha Academy scored f ive touchdowns, all from more than 40 yards out. With a couple of starters injured in the Minnehaha game, the Tigers met Chi-Hi and lost 21-7. Traveling to Moose Lake, the Tigers won that game 33-12. In the homecoming game against Forest Lake, the Tigers went down 31-7 as the Rangers showed that they were championship material. In the annual Green Jug battle with Pine City, both teams fought to a scoreless tie which left the Green Jug in the possession of the Tigers. It was not until the last two games of the season that the Tigers started to go as they beat North Branch 47-0 and Taylors Falls 35-0. 36 Stww L CO-CAPTAIN BOB HESSLUND Senior Guard CO-CAP'I'AIN A11-c0nfefence ERNIE B1-AISDE1-L GEORGE LABELLE Junior Quarter-back Senior Halgback Alhconfefence All -Conference GORDY GOEBEL Senior Center JACK YOUNGSTROM Senior Quarter-back End BILL FERGUSON Senior Tackle RONNIE JOHNSON DOUG JOHNSON Senior End 37 Senior End FRONT ROW: John Anderson, James Schoeberl, Dale Kennen, Duane Nessel, Ernest Blaisdell, Gorden Goebel, Robert Hesslund, Richard Olson. SECOND ROW: Coach Nelson, Jack Youngstrom, Bernard Effertz, Dave Lindstrom, Ronald Johnson, Raymond Kennen, Robert Keiser, Mr. Marolt. The Tigers were clawing in the 1956-57 basketball season. They jumped off to win eight straight games before falling to LCC at RC, 56-57, for their only regular season loss. Getting back on the winning trail, they won 11 more games in a row before losing a heartbreaker in the District 25 Tourney to LCC once again, 66-62. Although the Tigers lost toLCC in January, they came back to win the ECC with a 11-1 record. Fifth place NB took a decision from LCC to put the Tigers in a tie for the league lead which the Tigers tookpossessionof with the 66-57 victory over LCC in February. The best-played game of the yearwas against Chisago City at RC. Winning 73-47, the Tigers used all the tricks they had to dominate the game. The Tigers made their way to the District Tourney in glorious style but they did not play well in the tournament. They beat a poor Finalyson team, 85-58, but just squeezed by Forest Lake, 75-73, on Jack Youngstrom's two free throws with one second remaining in the game. The championshipgame was a nightmare for the Tigeis. Holding a 41-35 half-time lead, the Tigers didn't get a break the second hal.f and lost after a tremendous outbreak by the fired-up Chi-Hi team. Named to the All-ECC team and All-District 25 Tourney team were Jack Youngstrom and Dave Lindstrom. However, the team was balanced, played good defense, and won by applying what Coach Nelson taught. The season, successful with a 19-2 record, was a bit disappointing from the point of the district championship but after dropping 13 games in 1955-56, the te am made marvelous progress in their drive toward the title.
