Dr. Evelyn Duvall spoke to the student body on their relationships with other people. Dr. Evelyn Millis Duvall, Ph.D., is a regional consultant for the American lnstitute of Family Relotions-also cz director of the adolescent study course of the Na- tional Congress of Parents and Teachers. She has written a number of books, including Facts of Life and Love for Teen-Agers, and The Art of Dating. 9 Mr. Horde, Assistant District Attorney, speaks to those interested in law on Business Career Day. Jerry led the team in scoring, both from the field and foul line, averaging l6 points per game and finishing in the top ten in scoring in the K. l. L. Mike Padgett led the team in rebounding, followed by John Underwood, our only senior. The varsity, being very young and inexperienced, played much better than the record shows. The honors this year went to, Captain Jerry McCarter, making the second team All K. I. L. and second team All AA, and Mike Padgett and John Beam received honorable mention. The team this year promises to produce one of the best varsity squads Rule High has had in the past few years. Several boys who did outstanding jobs this year were Eddie Powers, Doug Hagaman, Mike Stephens, Bruce Taylor, Robert Mayes, Jimmy Flannagan, Robert Pressley, and John Curry. Larry Weaver was the only returning player from last year, and we had to start building. The team started out slowly, but had improved by the end of the season. The last game of the season was the best. It was an overtime game with Beardsley Junior, who was tied for first place, and Rule was beaten by two points. Football In the pre-season forecasts the Golden Bears were expected to be cellar dwellers in the AA League, however, they surprised everyone by finishing third. The Bears, despite their lack of size and experience, finished the season with a respectable 5-5 record. Making the All-Knoxville lnterscho- lastic League team were Jim Radar, and Toddy Baker. Ronnie Humphreys, Kenneth Frazier, John Tucker, Don Morrell, Jim Radar, and Toddy Baker made the All-AA team. Bock Row: John Story, Baseball The Bears started the season in fine fashion by winning ten straight games after an opening season loss to Gate City, Virginia. The Bears went on to compile an over-all l8-8 won-lost record. Winning the Western Division Cham- pionship, finishing second in the District Tournament, and placing Butch Rader, Mike Price, J. H. Stevens, and David Bruce on the All-Star team were some of the rewards reaped by the Bears during the season. Mike Price was also selected as the Most Valuable Player in the Western Division. lt was a very outstanding season for the Bears of '64, Sid Hatfield. J. H. Stevens is warming up before a game. Coach, as he was known to everyone, was honored -for his many years of faithful service at Rule. The faculty and student body pre- sented him a complete set of golfing equip- ment. Tennessee Polytechnic lnstitute realized his coaching abilities and offered him a better position than he had here at Rule. Bowling Team Rule has added bowling to its sports program. The Varsity Bowling Team con- sists of both boys and girls, and is one at the fourteen high schools represented in the KIL League. The team bowls each Sunday at Western Plaza, and all are mem- bers of the American Junior Bowling Con- gress. Rule rolls against each team twice and placed sixth at the end of the first half. The Team consisting of Rick Sands, Dwight Mynatt, Howard Farmer, Libby Lane, Juanita Shook, Glenda Wade, Sandy Chap- man, and Eddie Sexton, Captain, received varsity letters and bowling shirts in a spe- cial chapel. Three schools records were broken by Coach Kyle Keck's '64 track team. Charles Lawson and John Beam broke records in the high and low hurdles respectfully. The two mile relay team, composed of Jerry Vaught, Nelson Crawford, Jerry McCarter, and Bill Hickey, also set a school mark of 9.03. Q The team scoring was led by captain Toddy Baker and Jerry Vaught who went to the Regional meet in the 880 yard run. The R Club is for boys who have lettered in varsity sports, and it promotes better athletes, morally and physi- cally. Several money raising projects are sponsored such ll 77 as sock hops, fruitcake sales, and helping with a powder puff football game. Money raised from the projects pur- chases jackets, letters, lettermen's shirts, and jackets for the cheerleaders. Cheerleaders in action at a pep rally. We're here to show we're Rule High fans is only a sample of the many cheers led by the Varsity, B-Team, Junior High, and Peanut cheerleading squads. The Varsity, consisting of six seniors and four juniors, has done a splendid job of boosting school spirit through hard work and plenty of energy. They were the first Rule squad to win two first place ribbons in Cheerleaders Clinic at Tennessee Poly- technic Institute, Cookeville, Tennessee. The squad also won a second and third place ribbon. The B-Team, consisting of eight tenth grade girls, can be found cheering their team to victory. They used their experi- ence in winning an Honorable Mention, a second and third place ribbon at camp. These girls hope to become Varsity cheer- leaders. The Junior High, consisting of seven girls, has also done a fine job this year. The squad proved their ability at camp by winning a second and two third place ribbons. The Peanut cheerleaders consist of girls in the 'seventh grade who support the Rule Peanut football team. Girls participate by collecting pennies from students and friends. Each penny counts as one vote, and the girls collecting the most money are the winners. The Queen must be in the lOth- l2th grades, and the Princess must be in the 7th-9th grades. This year the winners were crowned at the Homecoming Dance. All finalists were presented gifts and corsages, the winners and runners-up also received trophies and a kiss from the captain of the football team.
