Like an encompassing ocean, the cycle will continue to flow in the ebb and tide of human existence to engulf more and more individuals in its enlightening stream of knowledge. Through the evolu- tion of education, philosophies of life are formed, human character molded, and the wisdom of the centuries ad- vanced and granted to each nation. As a part of the cycle, we must seek greater understanding by utilizing it, con- tributing to it, expanding it, and passing it on. In this way, education can benefit posterity. rjk CONTENTS Faculty 8 January Graduates 18 Sports 28 Homerooms 46 Activities 78 June Graduates . - y ' 4 s $ % 1963 KING ' S j  Bl ' ra JB t Miss Mary Gaunt JUNE GRADUATES Cathleen MacLeod Marlene Fiecek Carol Johnson Karen Karlk Carla Meser Noelle Ness Margaret Ratzow Barbara Ree Bonnie Schwedler Debra Visvader Lynne Yaeche FACULTY Karen Eider Carol Bergeman [anyce Cowen Nancy Gallau Anita Hotli SPORTS William Sampson Timothy (Cling Kenneth Braare Thomas Mertins Thomas Wehlage Craig Peot Editor-in-chief CIRCULATION Donna McCalla Karen Paulson Kathleen Casey Charlotte Hanson Mary Lehrbaummer Terry Quintero ACTIVITIES Bonnie DeSandre Daun Meuske Gloria Elmer Margaret Jahnke Cheryl Reese T PING Judith Landusky Dione Whicher Karen faros Janet Jelinek CROWN STAFF Ellen Keil Editor-in-chief Mr. Edward Boerner Advisor LITERARY Frederick Paulson William Rantanen Martha Bergner Russel Quirk Dennis Wolfmann Geraldine Young ART Judith Johannes James Kremer Carole Frazier Donna Bloedel Claudia Kntner Lynne Model Gwen Matkey Linda Knaubcr ADVERTISING Kathleen Tietz Karen Einsiedel Shirley Brockman Mauren Mangan Marcia Sampson HOMEROOMS Gail Huebschman Kathleen Bittner Carolyn Gaines Adel Hauck Mary Melhberg Patricia Ratzow PHOTOGRAPHY Dennis Wasylyk Donald Haaya Jack Dumke (an Vojta JANUARY GRADUATES Sharon Johnson Barbara Harding Jacqueline (akus Ellen Tetu Linda Witt ' t, W3 $ fi £1 an % i 1 Dr. Walter Bracer Principal Most of us take everyday things for granted. We pass the grocery store or the church a dozen times a week without really seeing it. It is that way with schools, too. We take them for granted. Schools have not always had the tools of learning that are available today. Man has travelled a long road from schooling for the few with word-of-mouth in- struction, to the development of the printing press and the existence of textbooks, and on to films, radio, television, and teaching machines, as aids to instruction. All these are but tools which may mold all into a pattern of conformity, or, tin the other hand may help each individual to an independent acquisition of knowledge and understand- ing through his own efforts and motivated by his own curiosity. M 7 1J6L w 10 Walter R. Olen Vice Principal Education is a means of seeking the best ways to continue and improve the ex- istence of mankind. Through thousands of years, many symbols of civilization have been transmitted, exemplifying the progress of society. A father ' s knowledge to hunt food, build a hut, and to protect his family was passed on to his son many civilizations ago. Discovering the uses of the fire, the wheel, and metals, aided in the production of food and clothing, transportation and protective weapons. The art forms and the printed word revolutionized the educative process bj providing a means of preserving society ' s way of life, enabling the next generation to gain this knowledge. Even though volumes upon volumes of information are available today through various modes of communication, the basic understanding of the word, the number. and the diagram are still paramount. Therefore, it becomes the task of the schools to make use of yesterday-- knowledge .md provide the most effective techniques to interpret and implement the word, the number, and the diagram. The task of the pupil is to arrive prepared for tomorrow ' s world. L ea y Dorothy Albrecht Art English Sam I. After compiling seven consecutive victories, the Generals faltered against a determined Lincoln, 18-7. In this de- cisive contest, the team suffered considerable injuries, and experienced enormous pressure. Pu- laski ' s undefeated campaign edged the Generals in the closely matched conference schedule. One of the most gratifying aspects of the season was the triumph over the perennial rival, Washington. Coach Edward Kotecki and Coach Ronald Brock were pleased with the strength the team showed and are very proud of the seven and one record they accumulated. city team as a reward for his offensive and defen- sive versatility. The lone losses to Tech and Washington dropped the team to second place. CROSS COUNTRY A cross country meet is a long, hard grind for the King-men who run under the command of Coach Norman Ruenzel. The team this year placed fifth in the city and tied for seventh place at the state meet in Hartford. The Generals also took fourth in the North Shore meet. This is not as high as King has gone in former years, but many of the better youngsters will be back next year to show the conference what a winner looks like. BASKETBALL This year ' s basketball team, under the guidance of Coach John Weinert, has used its talents to climb into a second place tie with Lincoln. Only undefeated North has a better record, and while they beat the Generals, they had all they could manage in accomplishing it. Players such as Dane Mathews and Milt Buchanan are prime reasons why King has done as well as it has. Much of the team will be back next year, so the Generals, always good competitors, are now becoming a power on the basketball court. BASEBALL The 1962 baseball season found the Generals in a close second place finish behind the Trojans of Tech. Aided by the flawless fielding of Arlis Jones and Dave Roventini ' s mighty bat. Coach Nfeubauer ' s boys showed their outstanding ath- letic ability. Gary Covert was elected to the all- TENNIS Under the coaching of Mr. Sam Balistreri, the tennis team finished the 1962 season in second place with a record of 38 wins and 6 losses. Glenn DePetro, Dick Michuda, and Dave Hunt all placed well in the city tournament. Jim Voigt completed a perfect season with an 1 I -0 record, while Neil Christiaansen compiled a 1(1 win-1 loss slate. Our tennis team is coming up in the world. Let ' s hope that it keeps right on going. GOLF Golf is a game of patience! The Generals ' golf team, coached by Mr. John Piacentine and captained by John Mursu, continued the tradition of the above maxim during the 1962 season. The team has talent, so 196s could be a real great year for the Generals. The 1962 team finished 8th in the city sectional and secured 5th place- in the State Sectional at Port Washington. NOT THE PRIZE TRACK SWIMMING The 1962 track team had a fairly good season. Missing personnel such as milers and sprint men kept the Generals from being a greater threat in city competition. Coach Stanley Hanks. ho c cr. has high hopes for the 1963 season and feels that King could have a very good year if the whole team comes through as it should. The 1963 swimming team, under the direc- tion of Coach Kent Culp, has placed very well in all competition. The Generals, this year, placed first in the Little City Swim Meet and third in the City Championships. The strong swimming of Jim Henderson and his brother. Bill, have helped the team to its long string of victories WRESTLING Rufus King ' s 1963 wrestling team finished with a verv guod third place finish in a tough conference. Standouts such as Fred Peterson, Jim Kuritz, and Jim Gumina helped boost the team to its excellent record. The grapplers under the tutelage of Coach Sam Balistreri have been coming along very fast in recent years. Since Roby Jackson, one of the City ' s better wrestlers, will be back next year, there could be an individual championship ahead. King FOOTBALL West O; ; 19 Washington .... 20 20 21 19 Tech ... Staff members of the Page learn the basics of good writing and organization, while Crown members absorb training in the field of picture grouping and artistic design. The Crown has an able advisor in Miss Mary Gaunt, and the Page has the services of Mr. Donald Gietzen as director. 82 tl ' } A CHOIR Pandemonium reigns each 6th hour in room 122 until Miss Alette Jahren, directress of A Choir, with the able assistance of Choir President Jack Stevens, puts the members through their paces. Many people join A Choir merely because they like to sing, while to others it serves as an academic grade. Delightful sounds of concentrated practice and effort emerge as they put on their blue and gold robes. Through Winter and Spring Concerts, June Graduation, and All-City Music Festival, they obtain substantial recognition and are to be congratulated for their fine work in our community. i BAND In contributing to the spirit of King, the Band, under the direction of Mr. John Tall, marches for football games and instills added life into the pep rallies. The band ' s half time entertainment included narrated stories with appropriate music and formations on the field which added color and enthusiasm. In addition, our band gave an outstand- ing performance in the Christmas and Spring Concerts. Its members also took part in the Milwaukee District Solo and Ensemble Contest, bringing many honors and awards to the school. The Milwaukee Schools ' All City Music Festival saw many King Band students taking part. Rufus King ' s band has been and always will be one of the city ' s most noted high school bands. S 9M r, B ft 15 ■f ' ORCHESTRA Mr. Arthur Z.ihonk, director of our tine orchestra, meets with his musicians every morning in room 122. The members formally display their musical abilities at school plays, the Spring and Winter Concerts, and Graduations. As anyone who ever heard them knows, they enjoy their work. (5k . ft © a VI ft« CROWN PLAYERS Crown Players, under the direction of Miss Catherine Miller, have charge of presenting dramatic choices at King. Members of the club learn the techniques of voice, stage presence, costuming, and make up. In past years Crown Players have ex- perimented with Shakespearean plays, comedies, and true dramatic pieces. The group is to be congratulated on its fine work in bringing theatre to King. STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council is the head of student government at King. It represents and speaks for the student body in all activities. The council, presided over by Dennis Breen and advised by Mr. George Ludwig and Mr. Allan Prasser, has carried on the good work started by the members of previous years. Among other activities the council supports Demetrius, our Greek foster child. The students of Rufus King can well be proud of their Student Council. i LIBRARY CLUB The Library Club, sponsored by Miss Maybelle Kahle, is responsible for keeping the library up to date and neatly arranged. The people working in this organization must be able to accept responsibility and hard work. This type of work fosters leader- ship and poise. One of the most important assignments of club members is to educate students in the proper and beneficial use of the library. F.T.A. The Future Teachers of America, headed by Miss Frances Scherkenbach, provides information as well as practice in the teaching profession. The F.T.A. conducts many activities some of which are the annual Mum sale, a field trip, and the coffee breaks for teachers. To all members who have earned fifty or more service points a symbolic red apple is presented. ApO a V I , fsf) USHERS CLUB The Ushers Club, although getting little publicity, is in actuality one of the school ' s most important organizations. It consists of those students who wish to give service to the school by guiding persons to their seats during important programs in the auditorium. Mr. Douglas Pagel, the sponsor of the club, has personally trained the ushers to give real service to Rufus King. PUBLICATIONS COUNCIL The Publications Council is composed of those students who collect money and take subscriptions for the Crown and Page in their individual homerooms. Although this type of service receives little recognition, it is a task which when well performed, enables publication organizations to function properly. K I .rtil 5?mx r £ ■© i ssass i, , 3fc,es«?ts B ss ses i 90 SPORTS BOOSTERS The Sports Boosters under the direction of Mr. John Foti inform the school on upcoming athletic events. It is their job to incite interest in the students and encourage them to support the men who participate in King ' s varied Athletic program. They arc- on call by Mr. Foti, and have done much to instill school spirit into the students. K CLUB The K Club consists of all those who have earned a letter at Rufus King. Their purpose is to foster respect toward this athletic award and plan the days on which they are to be worn. The Club also has another important purpose in that it advertises King ' s athletic programs among the students and encourages the school to support its teams.
