BRAUER Principal From its opening in September, 1934, under the outstanding leadership of the late Mr. Ralph G. Chamberlin, Rufus King has been known for certain values and beliefs concerning the education of its young people. Foremost among these has been the concern for each student as an individual and unique personality. Each student has been helped to understand himself, to plan appropriately for his high school life, to evaluate his future possibilities, and to have learning experiences essential to effective living. The school has been concerned with the whole individual. It has been understood that students have differing capabilities and need to work at varying levels. Working with parents and other members of the community has played an important part. These beliefs and values have given substance to Rufus King High School. They surely shall continue to serve as guideposts in the next twenty- if Eve years. MR. A. W. Tl-IURNER Vice-Principal Never once in the past 25 years was the individual lost sight of. Each boy and girl was treated as an important cog in this school, so that his stay at Rufus King would be as productive as possible regardless of home back- ground, ability, or physical characteristics. Every student was given the opportunity to grow physically and mentally no matter where he started from. Certainly, all who have worked under the fine direction of Mr. Ralph G. Chamberlin became imbued with his excellent philosophy and will perpet- uate it. Q-WJ' QM7 13 Lowell C. Adams Marie A. Bahr Mathematics Elizabeth Altenhofen Physical Education Health Counselor Sam J. With the coming of spring, Coaches Stanley Hanks, John Foti, Norman Ruenzel, and Walter Dreyer packed away their hand-warmers and earlaps and sharpened their track spikes. Winning the All City Relays, taking a second in both the City Meet and State Sectional Meet, and finishing third in the City Indoor Meet and Shore- wood Relays proved that not only the coaches sharpened their spikes. In the '58 season our sprint medley relay team, anchored by Dick Renz's out- standing half-mile, set a new City record. The other runners were: George Kemnitz, George Di- derrich, and Floyd Dorsey. Our pole vault team set a new Shorewood Relay record of 5279 total height for the three boys-jim Stollberg, Ron Couturier, and Bob Hoven. FORE! In the spring of the year, when most peo- ple relax and take it easy, we find Coach Lowell Adams' golf team. In 1958, however, the team found a remedy for this spring fever, being vic- torious among the City teams in total match play and placing second in the City Meet. The two re- turning lettermen, Dick Davison and Hugh Orr, who played key roles in the winning ways of '58, will help keep the '59 team under par . High- light of the season: Bill Pittenger, the only State qualifier with a blue-gold golf ball, score a dubious l7 in I8 holes, beating out Coach Adams by half a stroke. SPLASH! The Swimmers fell into Varsity competition for the first time this year, finishing with a record of three wins and three drownings. Under the ruddership of Coach Michael Nep- tune Huth, the squad dog paddled its way to third place in the Little City Meet, the annual beach party for schools without their own pools. With most of the squad returning, the upcoming season promises to be wet. THE TENNIS TEAM, capturing second place in the I958 City Conference with a dual match record of ll-l, and a seventh in the State Meet, have their rackets strung by Coach Sam Toast- master Balistreri. 6We don't want you to think that this is all he does . . . he also carries the tennis balls.J Last year, Bob Bruecker, who will be back this year, and Bill Boyd battered their way to the City Doubles Championship. Highlight of the season: despite the team's impressive winning record, no one was injured in jumping over the net to congratulate the loser. CROSS COUNTRY. Coach Norman Ruenzel's hard-working harriers panted across the finish line, victorious in 6 out of their schedule of 8. Racing to a second in the City Meet and to third place in both the North Shore Invitational and the State Meet rounded off a surprising season, since only three boys were returning lettermen. With four lettermen returning to pace next yearis team, a triumphant season is anticipated. MEN OF GRID-IRON. The '58, City Cham- pionship C8-OJ, football team, displaying that spirit, poise, and the desire to play good, clean, hard football which separates a first place team from a second place finisher, helped King celebrate its silver anniversary in high, grand style. This year, even in sporting a balanced offen- sive attack which included the accurate passes of Capt.-Q.B. Tom Erickson, and the bulldozing line- plunges of Don Wesenberg, Lou Blas, Ernie jack- son, and company, the defense stole the spotlight by not allowing one touchdown via the turf. Players who received special post-season hon- ors were All-City choices: Tom Erickson, End- Gary Perkins, Center-Joe Heckl, and Guard-Bob Bruecker. Dan Fritz, a senior tackle, was selected by Coaches Walter Dreyer and Richard Krueger as the most improved player. This year's gridiron championship is the third in the last four years. SWISH! Coaches Wesley Smith and Alan Wal- dron, aided by three returning lettermen-Dave Culver, Tom Erickson, and Charlie Singleton, lift- ed the basketball team out of last year's slump, boasting a 6-5 record and a strong defensive and rebounding team. The Frosh-Soph's, under Coach William Bates, compiled an impressive 8-3 record, assuring strong future seasons. HWRESTLERS, READY . . . WRESTLEV' . . . and they did! Taking hold of this yearis tough competition with a strong wrestler's grip, Coach Sam Balistreriis grapplers compiled an impressive record, superior to those of past great seasons. Plunging into the dual match competition, they grappled to an unblemished 10-0 record, Next on their list of conquerables was the City Meet. The result was the capturing of King's third straight City Championship, finishing the season with USM points, 28M ahead of runner-up South, and grabbing five individual titles. Next came the State Sectionals. Qualifying six boys for the State Meet in Madison, the State Sectional Champion- ship was taken with 96 points. Going on to Madison, the boys decided not to stop and they re- turned with King's first State Wrestling Champion- ship, compiling a record 56 points and snatching three individual titles. Summaries of individual performances in the City and State tournaments are: Pete Bellinghausen Clst in City, Znd in State Sectional, 4th in Stateb, George Kemnitz C2, 1, qualifierj, Don Wesenberg C1,1,1D, Lou Blas C1,1,1D, john Triggs C1,1,1j, and joe Heckl Cl, 1, 35. The B Squad grapplers, aided by Coach Howard Sanders, also pushed through their season BASEBALL. Jim . . . Gee, George, only one more City Championship to write about, and that's the baseball team. My notes indicate that this crew was coached by Robert Neubauer and had a 19-5 record which included a streak of 15 con- ference games without a loss. Now, that's some- thing we will have to insert in the article. George . . . Here's some material. Pitchers Tom Kannenberg C10-OJ and Phil Cler C9-35 gave King the best pitching staff in the city. Everyone knows how important pitching is, some say that it is 75W of baseball. Jim . . . Well, the stickmen certainly did their share. All-City selections, Hank Dumkee, Gary Perkins, and Earl Gengler, all hit high over 500. George . . . You know, jim, that article shouldn't be hard to write up. undefeated, 8-0. jim . . . I know. Of course, before throwing it in a wastebasket I had to read it, and behold: To the Commander-in-chief of the King's Page militia, Miss Elaine Steiger at Headquarters, 414: I have penetrated into the camps of the Kingls Crown in 307 and 514, am gaining their confidence. Caution: they, under the experienced generalship of Miss Mary Gaunt assisted by Mr. Bruce Bamberg and the staff, led by Rae Cavenaugh and Shirley Lindner, are working hard and, if not stopped, will subdue their major ob- stacle, the deadline. This would be a lethal blow to our cause, advise that our strategic operations staff, headed by Nadine Poch, Bill Cantwell, and Dennis Plinska, devise a scheme. Knowing that the addition of the two pages to our paper and our eternal problem of getting ads has thwarted our manpower, and our major cam- paign against the deadline requires most of our time, you need not send another agent. Signed, XY74W3', This message stunned me, and I decided to investi- gate. Tricked out in my sneak suit and armed with my trusty pencil and a pad of paper, I advanced toward the battle front. I was now in sight of the artillery flashes of battle, and dodging the flash bulbs, I was able to work my way to the artillery captain, Mr. Roy Myhre. At my request, he ordered a cease fire and the pho- tographers, packing away their cameras and tripods, retreated into their darkroom hide-a-ways in 124-B and 124-C. Days later, I learned that these forces were not in a battle of publications against each other, but instead were fighting for the same cause, advancing toward the same objective: to inform and amuse the students and alumni of Rufus King High School. 84 ING?
