Rufus King High School Milwaukee, Wisconsin DEDICATION TA2 ticking of the clock, the lengthening of the shadows, the changing of the seasons, the hanging of a new calendar- these are the signs of passing time. Each semester brings new experiences, knowledge and dreams. There are four years in a high school career, four years to grow in wisdom, to develop in character, and to offer gratitude to the Creator. To be wise in the use of this time is to challenge each day, to enjoy the opportunities, and to achieve some recognition, for yesterday is past, tomorrow is uncertain, and only today is definite. W. L. BRAUER Principal Man is unique among all the classes of living things in that he functions as a time-binder. That is, humans differ from all animals in the fact that it is possible for each generation to start at the point at which the preceding generation left off. Our individual existence has a time dimension, and the utilization of our particular span is most important. Every minute saved by making it useful and more profitable means an addition to life and its possibilities. Lost time can never be found again, for time sweeps on just the same in spite of us. Outside the day's work, the odd moments intelligently used rather than wasted characterize the person who constantly grows in intellectual and moral stature. if 10 MR. A. W. THURNER Vice-Principal Time should be used in such a way that yesterday, today, and tomorrow add up to something useful and purposeful. Now is the time to turn our thoughts to the future. Every minute used wisely today will pay big dividends tomorrow. Our life is determined by how we use our time. Q'-WJ' Lowell C. Adams Marie A. L H Q All 1 in V' v , -Juan-1. , In memorg of Dianne Powell who entered into the larger life on October 4, 1957 We too often speak of death in whispered tones as though this aspect of life was something to fear. But, in reality the experience of death is a glorious thing for all of us when we enter into it. This is most true for Dianne, who in her lifetime literally fulfilled the Scriptures as she went about doing good-to her family, to her friends, to her loved ones. Wherever her smile appeared, it brought a measure of new light to some person and touched him with the joy and happiness of life. Even at her young age, her life has been rich and full and complete, for we live in deeds, not years, we live in thoughts, not breaths, we live in feelings, not in figures on a dial. He most lives who thinks most, feels the noblest, acts the best. We mourn Dianne's passing from our midst, but we rejoice in that she was a part of our lives, and in the knowledge that she has entered a larger life with her God. 20 January Class Officers DENNIS MEYERS ELIZABETH MAYER President Secretary HENRY SCHWARTZ CAROLYN MEITZ Vice President Treaturer SCROLL OF HONOR Bach, Sharon Benway, Sharon Brown, Suzann Drezdzon, Alice Erdmann, Robert Hassett, Rodney Holtz, Carolyn Johnson, Karen Kuntzsch, Jerold McFarlin, Sheila Marino, Theodore Matthews, Sandra Mattson, Darleen Mayer, Elizabeth Meier, Marilyn Meitz, Carolyn Meyers, Dennis Nevermann, Lois Petko, Marilyn Pierce, David Pierce, Sigrid Pollman, Adolph Ryan, Glenn Scherbarth, Judith Schindler, Michael Schultz, Karen Schwartz, Henry Smrcina, Charles Frederick Ager Man of Few Wordy Emmet Apel It'J About Time Sharon Benway Sugar and Spice Soc. Their expectations were further heightened when the team won decisive victories in the first City Indoor meet, the Journal Relays, the Shorewood Relays, and the North Sectional Relays, which helped the team establish itself as the team to beatn for the city championship. But, as the day for the all important city meet was approaching, disaster struck in the form of leg injuries to key personnel, namely sprinters Tom McNutt and Dick Rauch, quarter miler Tom Skaug, and miler Dick Renz. Despite the fine all-out effort by the boys and coaches, the track team could not over- come the loss of their injured teammates, and thus finished third in the city meet. The picture in 1958, with returning lettermen and talented sophomores and juniors, looks hopeful, and the track team may be expected to be in the thick of the race for the city laurels. 33 VARSITY TENNIS Coach Balistreri, Gary Pagel, Glenn Meier, john Bolarto, ,lim Kiepert, Bob Bruecker. VARSITY BASEBALL In just four years of competition in City Conference baseball, King has succeeded in making not only first division, but also second place. Under the guidance of Coach Robert Neubauer, who was in his first year of coaching baseball, the team achieved a 17 to 5, win- loss record last season. Inspired by the enthusiasm of the new players and the experience of the following returning lettermen, Gary Gramprie, Henry Dumke, Tony Stroniski, Earl Gengler, and Gary Perkins, the team has, as a unit, achieved this enviable goal. We of Rufus King can be truly greatful for the honor that this fine team has gained for our school in these four short years and hope for the continuance of this present record of great achievement. 35 Top Row Dennis Streit, Edward Phillips, Ron Couturier, Lauren Walter, Elroy Barnekow, jack ensen Bob Palm Bruce Vandre, Jeff Nason, Michael Arndt. CROSS COUNTRY Completing another successful season, King's cross country team, under the guidance of Coach Norman Ruenzel, snatched the city harrier title for the second consecutive year, by edging out a strong East team by two points. Finishing the season with an unblemished dual competition record of 6-0, the team, paced by three returning lettermen, also took a fourth place in the state meet and brought the North Shore Invitational championship home. The B Squad raced to a second place in both the city meet and the North Shore Invitational, giving promise of continued strength for King. 36 nw'-5-4' Top RowfBill Keller, Jim Andreshak, Bob Bruecker, Lou Blas, Tom McFarlin, Tom Skaug, Tom Franz, Roger johnson, Gary Perkins, Les Poggenburg, George Haecker. This was on the lips of many a loyal King student, after their favorite football team had suffered a stunning defeat at the hands of the West High Redmen, thus eliminat- ing the hope of its third straight championship. Getting off to a slow start, losing the first two out of three games, the King Generals surged back to score convincing victories over North, Bay View, East, and Pulaski, and up to the last game was tied for the city championship. But, as if the fates were against it, our team lost and the precious championship, which we had won two straight years, slipped from our grasp. Steady performances during the season were turned in by Co-captains Gary Gramprie and Bob Bandoli, All-City tackle Dave Banholzer, and by the most improved player, Art Boeck. With a group of lettermen returning to form the nucleus of next year's squad, Coaches Walter Dreyer and Richard Krueger hope to improve on 1957's five and three record and win another championship for King. 38 SENIOR .5 213 'fx lv A 1 .. -.-- ' .: fa. l ,-:',:: A -. 4 ,V x :::::: Q' 2 W, '1:: .,.,,, '1 A 1 H ., I zzii i s ik ,. fr i -'- nf. 5 A Q ., ,,, 1 5 , ,. .,:.,., 9 A up ,,zI?1eL 5 I ,,,,, 3 , ,f DEM agp CMAJ? SOPHOMORE FOOTBALL Showing the drive and determination emblematic of all good football teams, the Sophomore team won the North Side Champion- ship. Coached by Wesley Smith and Lowell Adams, the team went through its live game schedule undefeated, highlighting its season by defeating Washington High School. Coach Smith believes that the boys on this squad will be valuable assets to future King gridiron teams. 41 Top Row-Gary Kellom, Kurt Abraham, Robert Scheer, Glenn Voss, Larry Kell, Gordon Habel, Robert Burkowitz, Allen Schiefelbein, Tom Egenberger, Ronald Baer, Michael Ostopowicz, Richard Weronka, Tom Korb, Robert Lembcke. FRESHMAN FOOTBALL Rufus Kings freshman football team achieved a 3-2 win-loss rec- ord for the season of 1957. The team, with one of the finest running records developed in this school, scored an excellent record of yardage gained in both running and passing. Under the guidance of Coaches Stanley Hanks and Robert Neubauer, and the field co-captains, Mike Ostopowicz and Ron Baer, the team achieved this goal. It is the sincere belief of the coaches that this team will furnish many skillful players for the future Varsity. l 42 Top RowfGeorge Fish, Tom Erickson, Marvin Grant, Iohn Borchardt, Tom Roozen, Tom Kannenberg Gary Gramprie, Coach Smith. VARSITY BASKETBALL Our basketball team, exhibiting excellent rebounding throughout the season, could not combine free throw accuracy with field goal accuracy. Lack of good free throwing contributed much to the down- fall of our team. However, the win-loss record does not indicate the line sportsmanship and driving spirit displayed by our basketball team this past year. With the help of Coaches Wesley Smith and Alan Waldron, and with all but seven of this year's squad returning, we can look forward to a successful 1958-59 season. 43 Q BAS KET BALL 44 Top Row-George Diderrich, Richard Peske, Allen Luebeck, Tom Galko, Frank Trimmel, Leonard Ostopowick, john Boetcher, Coach Alan Waldron. FRO SH-SOPH BASKETBALL The junior bucketteers, coached by Alan Waldron, had a record of 5 wins and 6 losses. Coach Waldron, tackling the job of groom- ing these boys for future varsity play, stressed fundamentals through- out the season. These boys will be welcome additions to the senior bucketteers next year. 45 Qffsiccrs 46 Qs.50L.5L. q m 47 VARSITY WRESTLING Top Row -Mr. Balistreri, jim Stray, Bob Bandoli. With eight returning lettermen and five undefeated wrestlers, the King grapplers plowed through the season undefeated. Strong competition was anticipated from South, Pulaski, Washington, and East, and these teams provided stronger battles than their scores indicate. The team displayed great depth at every weight. Nine boys of King placed among the top three at the city meet with Chester Sakura, Don Wesenberg, Dale Tinnerman, and Roger Johnson snatching individual titles. The team champion- ship was based on a combination of season and city tournament points. King compiled 42 points in the city meet to make a total of 151, 40 points ahead of runnerup South. The B Squad, with the aid of Coach Robert Rosa, shows promise of continued success for King, as they wrestled to a 9-1 record. A successful wrestling season, 1958, is now past . . . on to the 1959 championship. 49 llomerooms N Miss ,Joan Bartelsen 'Top Row-Tom Krueger, Eddie Klug, James Ziegert, Judith Huxhold, William Kothe, Neal Jochims, Ronald Goeden, Sheila Kuntz. Seems like a lot of time, doesnlt it? That, however, was the amount of time put to good use this year by the annual staff in composing the ,58 Crown. Pasting, cutting, writing and discussing the layout of the annual occupied 2700 seconds each time the annual staff met. The pound of typewriters in the background and the rush to meet the deadline added to the confusion. Under the direction of Miss Gaunt, Mr. Huth, and Mr. Bubeck, and also the editors Gayle Kozens, Editor-in-Chief, Judith Himmelmann, Assistant Editor. The zeal and am- bition of the annual staff showed forth and was rewarded with the completion of the ,58 Crown. 82 KNN K CLUB The Rufus King High School Club is formed to promote acquaintance- ship among all the letter winners of various sports. They are presented before the public by wearing their letter sweaters on Wednesday, our K day, in such a manner that they are a credit to Rufus King. SPORTS BOOSTERS The Sports Boosters, under the direction of Mr. John Foti, consists of one representative from each homeroom. Every year this group sets a goal to en- courage school spirit at all sports events. This year they have done an exceptionally good job selling football passes. Our attendance has been excellent at all of the games. They came in crowds, They came in masses, Because they bought, Their football passes. 84 D0 RE ME FA SOL Does this ring a bell? If it doesrft, it should! Rufus King is proud of its choirg under the excellent direction of Miss Alette Jahren, the choir has won acclaim all over the city. They meet every sixth hour in a room known to all by its melodious sounds, which ring throughout the corridors of our school. Some of the many events in which they participate are school concerts and seasonal programs. Outside events include singing at various churches during Lent and all city affairs in which high school choirs participate. 85 BAND The Rufus King Band is a fine example of the saying Good things come in small packages. The hard work and effort by the band members and their director, Mr. Michael Yindra, produce excellent results. The main purpose of the Band is to perform on the concert stage, since the major portion of the year is devoted to practicing concert music. Part of the fall semester each year is used to perfect precision drill routines and prepare the band for parades and perform- ances at athletic events. Additional duties of the band include performing at pep- rallies, school and civic programs, the june graduation, and music tournaments. The band also makes periodic trips to different parts of Wisconsin. 86 ORCHESTRA One of the well-known activities of our school is the orchestra. In past years it has won praise from all over the state. The music presented this year is fine evidence that they are worthy of this recognition. The orchestra, under the able direction of Mr. Arthur Zahorik, meets daily in room 122. The school play, gradu- ation, concerts, and many such events keep the musicians well prepared to supply appropriate music for any occasion. 87 I N-unnf 3 fe: 3 4 DRUGS. Every spring try-outs for the Rufus King Drill Team are held. Their unusual formations take time and patience to learn, but add a touch of flavor to each occasion. The officers are: President, Nancy Wursterg Vice- President, Barbara Koelerg Secretary-Treasurer, Judy Whitmoreg and Captain, Nancy Wurster. THE NEWLY FORMED SWHMMING TEAM 92 PEP CLUB P-E-P! That's the inspiring shout the pep club uses to stimulate the spirits of all students to back our football and basketball teams with cheers. The club is composed of 12B and 12A girls who wear blue and gold beanies every Friday to announce week-end games and to plant vim and vigor into every King-ite heart. At all the games this enthusiastic group sings the pep-club song, in which rooters pledge their loyalty, and cheer the team to many victories. The group under the guidance of Mrs. Shirley Pintar wants everyone to join in the spirit. Won't you? 93 CROWN PLAYERS Bright lights, color, and beauty! These are the words connected with an ambitious group of boys and girls participating in the Crown Players which meets every Tuesday when the clock jumps to 3:20. The purpose of the club is to promote dramatic interest. This is accomplished through an annual 5-act play and several one-act plays throughout the school year. Though every person canlt participate in one play, no member is kept idle. Besides acting, the members help with costumes, make-up, properties and prompt- ing. All this spells loads of fun for everyone. Under the wonderful guidance of Miss Catherine Miller, who shapes the members into line actors, and Mrs. Pintar, who directed this year's hilarious comedy Time Out for Ginger , Crown Players proves the talents of many and brings hours of fun to all! 94 TIME QUT F-OR GINGER TIME OUT FOR GINGER CAST OF CHARACTERS Lizzie, the maid - - - .................C - - - - Agnes Carol ............
