Ralph G. Chamberlin, great soloist, great accompanist, and great con- ductor in education, believed the score of life's concert to be complete only when every tone is given its full beauty. As a soloist, he strove untiringly and successfully to perfect the quali- ties of faith, friendship, and integrity in himself. Possessing the ability to understand and to inspire, he became a skillful ac- companist, encouraging his associates to achieve success in their endeavors. The many organizations to which he gave his time and talent were privileged to have had such a great maestro in their midst, and he proved more than worthy of the honors accorded him. Under his baton of education, the hearts and minds of thousands of youth were tuned until they, too, played their movement in the harmonious symphony of life. Chamberlin was born on October 6, 1887, on a farm in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He attended a rural school and later went to Michigan State University to obtain a bachelor's degree in civil engineering. He began his teaching career at the Milwaukee School of Engineering before he went to Ironwood High School in Michigan as a mathematics teacher and coach. In March, 1915, Mr. Chamberlin became a mathematics teacher at Washington High School, and remained there until 1917, when he entered the field artillery. He returned to Washington High School in 1921 and in 1927 he was appointed vice-principal of North Division High School. Then, in 1934, he took over the job of principal of Rufus King High School. Mr. Chamberlin received the 1956 Caroline Bigelow-McGeoch award of the League of Women Voters of Milwaukee because of his work here and his activities in numerous educational organizations. Some of his many activities include being president of the Milwaukee High School Principals' Association, and a member of the Wisconsin Con- gress of Parents and Teachers, the Wisconsin Education Association, the National Education Association, and the Wisconsin White House committee. In addition, Mr. Chamberlin was a member of Tau Beta Pi, an honorary engineering fraternity, and of the Kappa Delta Pi and the Phi Delta Kappa fraternities. Besides that, he was also a Mason and vice-chairman of the board of Milwaukee Christian Center. On Ianuary 20, 1957, he died of a heart attack in his home. 10 DEAR MR. CHAMBERLIN In Memoriam But three short months ago We greeted you With birthday cards And wishes deep and true For length of Life And all good things To come to you. But now you're dead And we are filled with grief: And pain so floods our hearts There's no release in words. As mute and inarticulate We can but feel The burden of our loss: The tearing up of roots We planted long ago. How can Death sever All the bonds of close Association through the years? Of patient understanding? Of sharing joy and grief And storm and stress together? How can Death destroy Affection and respect And all familiar routine things Built by unity in Work, Our mutual reaching Toward a goal? Ah, be assured, dear friend, That Death holds no such power! And though your weary body Rests in some far field Forever, and in passing Time, forgot: Your glowing love of God and Man Lives on, undimmed. It lives within the Life Of every child who better serves Both God and Man Because he passed your way. MR. CHAMBERLIN Principal 1934-1957 And our memorial to you Shall be to keep the torch alight To seek the heart and soul Of every child, to see his worth And to so teach, that we. Like unto you, shall ever be Dedicated servants of humanity. Bessie Murphy DR. W. L. BRAUER Principal The World is fast becoming one community. It should be increasingly clear that only rank conceit can justify the belief that any national group can be wholly superior to any other. History is abundant with the lessons that we cannot turn our backs on efforts at understanding of, and cooperation with, the other peoples of the world. In the education of all of the peoples lies the great strength and force to help us move forward to the necessary mutual understandings for a cooperative world with all its fruits of liberty and peace. MR. A. W. THURNER Vice-Principal Except for the staggering amount of money being spent at this time for military purposes, education is America's biggest business. It is quite generally accepted, too, that it ought so to be. For the principle is universally accepted that a great democracy, such as ours, can neither be permanently maintained, nor be made to function properly, except in ct country with a well-educated citizenry. ' Where education is deemed to be of such paramount importance it becomes obvious that education must be broad, undergirded by the great principles of freedom and equality laid down in our Declaration of Indepen- dence and in the Constitution of the United States. To these principles We are committed Under God. www if 3 .55 f Lowell C. Adams Marie A. Bahr !U Mathematics ft - Elizabeth Altenhoten 4' Physical Education fl X Health Armond W. As the boys loosened up, hints of a successful season were floating around, and it was! Depth was anticipated in all events. With returning lettermen in each phase of competition it was certain that once again King was to produce another top-notch squad. The boys made a fine showing Wherever they performed, including the state meet Where Tom McNutt took a lst in the 220 yd.,'Al Tesch, a 3rd in the broad jump and Lee Penniston, a 4th in the 440 yd. Prospects are high for this year With the Winning of both meets they have entered, the Iournal games and the City indoor. me 3? g U.. Throughout the late spring and summer this familiar cry was sounded as the baseball squad completed its third year of competition. Under the able guidance of Coach Gradisnik, the team gave a good showing but were unable to elevate themselves into the first division. Tony Stroinski was elected all city first-baseman and is expected to reach even higher peaks this year. Coach Neubauer, who recently took over the leadership of the club from Mr. Gradisnik, will miss the fine services of graduated seniors, lim Carlsen, lack Loyda, Iim Freeman, Bill Tews, Captain Bernie Tessmer, Har- lan Taft, and Wayne Plinska. 35 Fourth RowfRoger Klumb, Tony Stroinski, Ron Fondriest, Bob Wallace, Dennis Habel, Deon Haney, Chuck Wendt, Dave Banholzer, Ron Brandstatter, ,lim Witt, Dick Koenig, Wayne Bartelt, Terry DeSandre. This was the cry of the champion 1956 football squad under the direction of coaches Wally Dreyer and Richard Krueger. And they did do it, capturing the second city title trophy in two consecutive years. With overpowering line play and speedy backs, the squad dominated the local conference crushing Custer, North, East, South, and West by over 3 touchdowns. Sharp teamwork led by co- captains, Tony Stroinski and Bob Wallace, proved the winning factor in many games including the single T. D. victory over Tech. Other fine performances were supplied by all-city tackle, Ron Fondriest, and most improved player, Gerry Sakura. The boys trained hard and their condition, many times, pulled them through during the final quarters of the games. A quick start by an enthusiastic Washington eleven stunned the Generals and before they had recovered, the final gun sounded on an 18-14 victory by the rival Purgolders. Other than this defeat, the gridders experienced a spotless season compiling a fine record of 7 straight Wins and only 1 loss, giving them the city title. 36 ,JW 'ff if -: ,Ja 3 5 HS' . f . if b x 3 if f , 5 an 5' M 2 qi x M-I4 Fx. --SN. SOPHOMORE FOOTBALL Coach Wesley Smith's sophomore football team truly showed spirit and undying determination this year by remaining unde- feated and unscored upon. With a small team and an excellent coach, the boys stood up under all five teams which they met and beat. Although small in size, they still came out on top as North Sectional Champions. Their main attraction for 1956 was the three-act play, Our ToWn . In 1957 they presented a one-act play, The Willow Plate . Crown Players meet on every Tuesday of the Week to discuss the plan- ning and development of future endeavors. This talented, ambitious group is advised by Miss Catherine Miller of the speech department. This able personality aids the group in the selection and presentation of its productions. SPORTS BOOSTERS This group of sports enthusiasts have boosted the ticket sales more than ever. Our attendance at football and basketball games and other sports activities is better now than in past years.
