It has developed through the centuries from crude pictures to modern newspapers and television. These publications permit the revelation of daily happenings and attitudes of the community, the nation, and the world. Our King's Crown is sharing with you the world of Rufus King High School. just as communications have drawn the peoples of the world closer together, the 1956 King's Crown wants you to be drawn closer to our school's stream of life-the faculty, the students, sports, clubs, and activities, not only as a reflection of school life with happy memories and dramatic events, but also of ideals and aspirations. PIETER VERVLOET Mr. Pieter Vervloet was born in Utrect, Holland on March 5, 1903. After coming to this country he attended the University of Wisconsin where he obtained his Bachelors of Arts Degree. For sixteen years Mr. Vervloet dedicated his life to teaching King students. Instilling sound methods, honorable principles, and knowledge he helped form the lives of the youths of today to become the leaders of tomorrow. Al- though a sudden illness took Mr. Vervloet from us on December 31, 1955 we shall not forget him. We who have known and loved Mr. Vervloet will always cherish his memory. IN MEMORIAM Once more the soft shod Angel of the Lord Has stood within our midst Unseen. And yet we were aware He hovered near at hand Until there came a night He gathered close Within the shelter of his wings A man we loved And bore him Home To dwell forevermore Within his Father's House. This man was many things To us: husband and father Teacher, colleague, friend. Beloved by students He skillfully trained The Hand and Mind But, understanding, Firm, and Kind, with equal skill He taught the Heart And shaped the Will. He was true artisan Richly endowed, The magic of talent In his hand and touch. And of this wealth How generously He gave to us In many gracious ways What greater tribute Can we pay to him than this: Each life he touched Was better just because He lived, and taught, And served his fellowman. Bessie Murphy MR RALPH CHAMBERLIN Principal Rufus King High School recognizes its major role as that of producing- insofar as school education can-healthy, self-supporting, morally upright, and rationally be- haved young men and Womeng young men and women who as homemakers, as workers, and as citizens of their community, state, and nation are able and willing to support and improve our American Way of Life. To this end, our organization of classes and out- of-class activities is based upon an adequate program of guidance and counseling which takes into consideration the kinds and levels of talent and ability possessed by each youth and provides a school program which meets his needs as adequately as possible. The Three R's and More is the concern of this school for its youth. ll MR. CHARLES WESTHOFEN Vice Principal In today's modern scientific and industrial world, a high school education is a pre-requisite for success and happiness. Rufus King High School offers a curriculum which is geared to the abilities, interests, and plans beyond high school for the young people of our community. We earnestly hope that all of our students will take ad- vantage of the opportunities offered by our school. VARSITY FOOTBALL Our Generals opened the '55 season with a decisive vic- tory over North. The team had embarked on what would later be called the greatest football season in the schoo1's history. With each successive game, the Generals became more potent. They whitewashed East and tied powerful Bay View. West and Pulaski were next to fall victims to the King onslaught. On Thursday, October 27, the Generals played one of the most momentous games ever seen at the North Stadium. The boys got off to a slow start, but because of their eagerness and determination, they improved rapidly. The team's record was a creditable 3 wins, l tie and 1 loss. With the closing of the season, coach Smith has produced another bumper crop of varsity prospects. Following an early season victory over East C21-435 and an upset at the hands of Whitehsh Bay, our high-spirited Gen- erals emerged victorious in a triangular meet with South and West C25-51-879. The boys had barely scraped the rnud from their spikes when their endurance was put to a test in the North Sectional where, sparked by Oliver Larson's first place finish, the team swept the meet and went on to place second in their following encounter, the North Shore Invi- tational. The enthusiastic fleet-footers finished their outstand- ing season with a sparkling second place in the City Meet and sixth in the State Meet. 38 I K -X f M3 M B gig? ? ' U zz' J 39 VARSITY BASKETBALL Under new head coach, Wesley Smith, our varsity basketball team capped its most successful season in three years. The team got off to a fast start with non-conference victories over Whitefish Bay and Greendale. In the conference opener, the boys lost a heart-breaker to Pulaski. Then the sledding got rough and the team garnered only three victories in the next eight starts. From that point on, the squad began to show their real power. An upset of Lincoln and three lopsided triumphs over West, Washington, and East sent the team's tournament hopes sky rocketing. The boys rushed North in the tournament opener. Cedarburg was the next victim of the powerful Generals. Our team met their waterloo as far as the tournament was concerned when they were beaten by West Milwaukee. The en- tire season was one of mixed emotions, but it gave strong indication that our Generals were well on their way in regaining their basketball prowess. 40 CHEERLEADERS 1 ff' if J Top Row--Mr. McFadden, Henry Dumke, James Wilbur, Gary Eigenfeld, Wayne Bartelt, John Borchardt, Robert Hoven, Tom Moerman. FRESHMAN-SOPHOMORE BASKETBALL Our freshman-sophomore basketball team under the able direction of coach Don McFadden finished the season with four wins and five losses. The team broke into the victory column in the first game of the year with a triumph over Custer. In the season finale the boys beat East. Throughout the season the boys showed great promise for the future. Coach McFadden has developed some very fine material. At the outset of the season, a few members of the team were promoted to the varsity. These and other graduates from the freshman-sophomore squad will be carrying the fates and fortunes of our future varsity basketball teams. King Custer . King North . King Washington King West . . Two mat- men, Terry Huxhold and Earl Ziebell, went on to become city champions. The team in the State Sectionals once again showed their depth by capturing the trophy from the grasping hands of Washington's, Lincoln's and East's wrestlers. They placed three second places and six first places leading the entire city. At the State Finals three men figured in the scoring. Don Rowe and Keith Ott both took fourth place. Terry Huxhold won all four matches to complete an undefeated season and to become the first wrestler from King to take the State Championship. 47 VARSITY BASEBALL First Row-Gary Gramprie, .Tim Freeman, Jim Carlsen, Earl Gengler, Gary Perkins. Miss Catherine Miller has the opportunity to shape these fine actors into the really great talent which they display so well. 94 PRINCIPAL CHARACTERS ANNIE GET YOUR GUN Annie Get Your Gun was a rich romantic story with all the color and zest of a real wild west show. This exciting comedy was full of cowgirls, Indins, shooting, and scalping. Its beautiful scenery and colorful costumes were the hnal touches for this spectacular and hilarious production, presented on November 18 and 19. The story was built around Annie, a back-woods girl, whose only ambition was to raise her lovable little brother and sisters, and to hunt quail--that is, until she met Frank Butler, a handsome young wild west show performer. We give our thanks to the director, Miss Catherine Miller, for making it possible for us to see and enjoy such a tremendous production. E Annie Oakley . Dolly Tate . Jessie . . Minnie . . . Partners in a Bright Tomorrow One of the greatest opportunities facing Amer- ica today is the preparation of qualified leaders for tomorrow . . . and there's every indication that the right combination for accomplishing this is rapidly taking shape. First, there's you - and the growing number of alert young people like you upon whom any successful venture in the future must be built. Then, there are our schools and teachers-an educational system that right now is doing such a fine job of adjusting itself to increasing en- rollments and constantly changing subject matter. Newest member of the team is industry, which is becoming ever more aware of its responsi- bility by providing grants, scholarships, on-the- job training, classroom aids and other educa- tional help. Allis-Chalmers is happy to be a part of this partnership in a better, brighter tomorrow.
