American heritage is based on the law pro- claiming that all men are created equal, with equal rights and privileges, equal op- portunities for education and advancement, a place in the universe no better or worse than that of his fellow human beings, and the right to expect consideration and respect for his beliefs from all persons, regardless of their positions or stations in life. This is the idea of brotherhood. This basic concept of equality. combined with tolerance for all races, all re- ligions, and sympathy and understanding for the problems of all classes, is the foundation, the groundwork of all efforts to establish uni- versal harmonious living. To this objective the United Nations must dedicate itself before any advancement can be made in the direc- tion of international peace and security. To this objective our own national government must dedicate itself to preserve a truly demo- cratic way of life. To this objective we of Rufus King have dedicated ourselves to form a strong link in the chain that binds together all mankind. Our task is the active practice of brotherhood in our deeds day by day. We have become well acquainted with this prac- tice in our classes, where equality and demo- cratic principles are especially stressed: and in our assemblies, where speakers and enter- tainers of all races, religions, and nationalities have been appreciated and well received and have in many cases won our respect and admiration for their causes. We are there- fore obligated to dedicate this yearbook of 1947 to that goal. Dare we challenge the in- alienable rights of man!
