J E E 1947 I IPS CRUW Yearbook Published by the Students of RUFUS KING HIGH SCHUOL Milwaukee, Wisconsin edwutmn . . . American heritage is based on the law pro- claiming that all men are created equal, with equal rights and privileges, equal op- portunities for education and advancement, a place in the universe no better or worse than that of his fellow human beings, and the right to expect consideration and respect for his beliefs from all persons, regardless of their positions or stations in life. This is the idea of brotherhood. This basic concept of equality. combined with tolerance for all races, all re- ligions, and sympathy and understanding for the problems of all classes, is the foundation, the groundwork of all efforts to establish uni- versal harmonious living. To this objective the United Nations must dedicate itself before any advancement can be made in the direc- tion of international peace and security. To this objective our own national government must dedicate itself to preserve a truly demo- cratic way of life. To this objective we of Rufus King have dedicated ourselves to form a strong link in the chain that binds together all mankind. Our task is the active practice of brotherhood in our deeds day by day. We have become well acquainted with this prac- tice in our classes, where equality and demo- cratic principles are especially stressed: and in our assemblies, where speakers and enter- tainers of all races, religions, and nationalities have been appreciated and well received and have in many cases won our respect and admiration for their causes. We are there- fore obligated to dedicate this yearbook of 1947 to that goal. Dare we challenge the in- alienable rights of man! The four basic objectives are as follows: l. To give the students an opportunity to plan and discuss the condition of audi- torium conduct. 2. To give the students a voice in the se- lection of assembly programs. 3. To promote the development of a sys- tem through Which more original stu- dent programs can be produced. 4. To organize and direct the noon hour activities. The activity meets on Thursday of each Week, at 8:20, in the auditorium, under the supervision of Miss Eis. Studcnt Council The Student Council provides a place where students may voice opinions through their elected representatives. The Board meets and discusses the student and school diiticulties in a democratic man- ner. By discussing these difficulties, our school becomes a finer and more agreeable place in which to work. The Council drew up its first written Con- stitution this semester. The SAB is under the supervision of Miss LaBine and Miss Mervash and Harlan Per- gande, president. The SAB meets every Tuesday morning at 8:10. K inggs Crown The purpose of the an- nual service is to bring the students closer to the school and its activities and events. This service met with Mr. Hunter and Miss Gaunt. The activity is divided in two groups. Cue group consists of the section devoted to gradu- ating seniors and their features, homerooms, and faculty, and meets with Miss Gaunt. The other group consists of activities, sports, and features, and meets with Mr. Hunter. Both activities take place on Tuesdays and Thurs- days during the eighth hour and after school. The members of the Vocal Ensemble are picked from the choice group of the A Choir. After many rehearsals, the ensemble may be called upon to sing for various groups and organizations on notice. A varied repertoire of songs is needed for presentation of programs. Boys' Double uartet The boys' double quartet consists ot a group of boys, all experienced in music. These boys are selected by Miss Sargeant. The quartet came into existence about three years ago when a small group of boys sang during intermission of a school program. Since the audience liked it, Miss Sargeant has made it a permanent semester project. This semester there are two double quartets. Miss Sargeant has also chosen four extra boys to serve as the substitute quartet. These boys fill in if one of the other boys cannot be present at any program in which they must appear. Visual Service The visual service cadets have had at least one semester's training in this service. Most of the cadets are or have been in the ad- vanced class. The two cadets on duty every hour run films, slides, film strips, records. assist in making recordings, set up the public address system for programs, and have con- trol of the music for the noon dances. Dramatic acting has done a fine part in pre- paring entertainment over for the school as well as giving many people valuable dra- matic training. S Stage peration One of the most active and useful activities is the stage operation service. It is through its combined efforts that we have excellent lighting effects and fast changes of settings between scenes at our plays and assemblies. The boys do an excellent job of maintaining and operating the stage. Under Mr. Siebrecht, the boys meet every eighth hour, except Mondays, in the audi- torium. They learn the proper use of all stage equipment. 4 ccounting and icket Sales Under the direction of Mr. Zimmerman, stu- dents contribute their services in Bookstore B for accounting and ticket sales. A spirited group of King athletes were on hand September 4 as our football team began its rigorous training in preparation for its 1946 grid schedule. Under the watchful eyes of Coaches Wolf and Hanks, the boys were molded into an organized team, ready to take on its opponents. The Generals started out the season in fine style by defeating Bay View, then tying Pulaski. Retaining their winning form in the third game, the King charges defeated the Tech eleven. The Washington game, played before an overflow crowd of l3,000, was perhaps the hardest defeat for the boys to swallow. After taking a 9-6 half-time lead, the Generals saw that lead disappear, and when the final gun cracked, they were on the wrong end of a 38-9 score. Although unable to match the records of some of our rivals, the efforts of our team were not in vain as testified by the large turn- outs at the games and the enthusiasm of the school in general. The season thus closed quite successfully with King finishing in fourth place. Scores King .... .... Klng .... .... King .... - - King .... .... King ...l .... King .... .... Sophomore Football The 1946 edition of the King Sophomore team was developed and guided through a very successful season by Coach Myhre. The purpose of this team was to promote activity in football by as many as can be accommo- dated. The goals for which it aimed were to increase a player's knowledge of football and to increase his ability to play. These goals were reached through practice, scrim- mages, and games. The team practiced every day through eighth hour and on into the late afternoon. Several practice sessions each week were spent scrimmaging the varsity, using the type of plays the varsity would meet in its games. Although King was not in the B conference, it played four games, losing only to Whitefish Bay. King was the only team to cross the Bay goal line all season. Another noteworthy accomplishment was that King gave Iuneau, sophomore champs, its lone defeat of the season. The team scored 47 points against 14 for its op- ponents. Some of the boys are able to prove their ability to play varsity ball and are pro- moted. Several were promoted during the past year. All, however, are not able to make the jump from the sophomore team to varsity. Viewing the impressive record of the team and various individual achievements we find apparent evidence that the goals of the team were reached. The boys started slowly as they dropped the first tune-up contest to the Kenosha squad 55-43 in a non-conference game. The next two non-conference games found the visitors downed. The first conference win for the Generals came against North: the visitors being trounced to the tune of 42 to 32. The locals next four opponents fell to de- feat as the hard-driving quintet snared games from East 43-34, Washington 47-39, North 37- 34 and Custer 52-39. The game of the year was the fight for divisional honors with East. The latter bested the locals in a heart-break- ing contest by scoring the Winning points in the last part of the game. The final score was 35 to 20. The last game was the King-Washington battle. The locals bested their opponents with a score of 63 to 44. Although teamwork was the keynote for the success of the team, this season did pro- duce a standout in the person of Dick Goelzer. Chosen North Section all-city center by the Sentinel, Dick led his teammates in scoring, as he made l2l points during the schedule. A veritable hawk on field goals, he controlled the ball much of the time. Contributing 79 of the team's total points, Dick Schultz was the selection for the birth of North Section all-city second team. The team's prospects look bright for next season with some of the lettermen returning for more competition. SCC R IS Nov. Kenosha l.......,.. King Nov. Fond du Lac King Nov.
