Dedication We, the students of Rufus King, dedicate our annual of 1945 to the brothers, friends and teachers of our school who are giving all they can in defense of their country, especially those who have made the final sacrifice of earthly existence in fighting to preserve the highest ideals of men. All those actively engaged in the war arc courageously completing the first task in the establishment of world peace. For peace can come only after a struggle in which the power of evil forces is destroyed. Next we will be faced by a less physical but a vitally important problem. We must destroy the intangible forces of hatred, prejudice, jealousy and rivalry. Our soldiers are telling us that we must not let another generation experience what thev did in Europe and what is still ahead of them against Japan. The destruction of war must give way to a world in which all men arc free to be governed as they wish, and live tranquil, useful lives, free from fear and want. We realize that the next job is ours. Our generation is preparing itself to help to carry out the principles of international co-operation as set forth in the meeting of the Rig Four, Dumbarton Oaks, and San Francisco. The struggle will be a difficult one and w ill demand great tolerance, patience, and understanding the wisdom and experience of age as well as the enthusiasm and energy of youth. 1 he boys on the battlefield will never be forgotten. Out of our remembrance will grow determination that we will do all w e can to make their sacrifice the stepping stone to future world happiness and peace.

“We have learned in the agony of war that great power involves great responsibility . . . We as Americans do not choose to deny our responsibility. “Nor do we intend to abandon our determination that, within the lives of our children and our children's children, there will not be a third world war. . . . “But the mere conquest of our enemies is not enough. We must go on to do all in our pow er to conquer the doubts and the fears, the ignorance and the greed, w hich made this horror possible. . . . “We must cultivate the science of human relationships—the ability of all peoples, of all kinds, to live together and work together, in the same world, at peace.” Franklin I). Roosevelt
