Q 0 97 MMZJBL ' X X N D N Nl D 1 .513 Dedica ion We, the students of Rufus King High School, dedi- cate this 1944 yearbook to the future. The past is over, the present we can not materially change. But the fu- ture is ours -it belongs to us, and us alone. True, the future is not all milk and honey. It is not even prom- ising. We must now dedicate ourselves to the immense problem confronting us: to learn many things, among them tolerance for others, and to learn them well, so that we can take good care of this trust of ours. We must see to it that we do not make the mistake that has been made so often before-we must see to it that We not only win this War, but also Win the peace. There can be no hatred of any people because of their nationality, color, race, or religious beliefs. By arming ourselves with the knowledge of errors that have been made, we will be able to keep faith with those fighting men Who are right now doing all in their power to defeat our enemies. It is necessary that We prove to these men that their sons will never have to take up arms again because We, the hope of the nation, failecl to do our part. Some day, 'way in the future which We are all planning for, if we have accomplished our aims, the people of the next generation will be members of a united, friendly family of nations ignorant of War, except as they read of it in history books. Let us pray that that day Will not be far off. Q XX Z, TX N X N. 'T X5 , x ' X' X-N N Y, X7 5 w X, W X NL Q A hw . . Mon- .ghth t Mr. 'tise- :und serv- nany buy- e by part 71 is 'outs, and 1 for INSTRUMENTS The activity for Woodwind instruments meets on Tuesday in room 121 and is sponsored by Mr. Zahorik: The aim is to arrive at good intonation and ensemble in the section. By that we mean that all the instruments of the same kind must try to sound as one instrument as much as pos- sible. If the music is to sound well a breath must be taken at the proper place in the phrase. All like instruments still have something individual about each one of them and it is the discovery and control of these oddities that makes for good en- semble, or should We say pleasant listen- ing. This is what we strive for and the farther We get the more accomplished is the individual and the more pleased is the audience. The basses and horns group meets on Wednesdays and the brass instruments on Thursdays. To make them an in- delible part of our lives, the people of the An- nual Service, meeting every Tuesday and Thursday during the 8th period, endeavored to bring them to you in a pictorial review of the past year. Putting their all into what they were taught and practiced they closed a victorious season with six wins, one tie, and one loss. Under the watchful eyes of coaches Wolf and Hanks the team had become one of the best ever to represent King. The boys swept out to win all of the conference games except that with Washington. Probably the most hectic of all the conference games was that with our old rival North. With an unexpected push of spirit and grit they pushed the Generals down to their own 18 yard line and in the second quarter to the 8 yard line. With the spectators wild with excitement our squad held the line and began an offensive of its own. In the closing minutes of the game King went over for two touchdowns to win. B TEAM To understand the fundamentals of football and to play under the rules and regulations of actual game conditions is the purpose of the B team. This opportunity to learn the sport is building our sound, sturdy, future varsity. Though daily practice is hard Work it results in players who know what they are to do. Mr. Charette coached these boys and taught them the art of co- ordination and cooperation by which they would stand ready for the coming matches. The material which makes the backbone of every squad was brought out and the team Went through the season to have a matched score of three wins and three losses. Top Row-William Henke. FRESHMAN-SOPHOMORE TEAM King's Freshman-Sophomore team came out in the end of the season with a mixed score of two Wins, two ties, and one loss. The boys on this squad really did a great job and we are proud of them. You probably saw them outside practicing and you probably noticed that sometimes it Was raining pretty hard. Well, that is what a team has to go through to make the fellows play With real pep. Out on the field you also saw two forms huddled up watch- ing the workout and issuing orders. These Were the able coaches Mr. Bubeck and Mr. Stewart. With this team full of fighting spirit we can safely say that we will have a good team in the future. VARSITY BASKETBALL Answering coaches Polomis and Vervloet's call for basketball in October, were one retiring letterman, Earl Halverson, and Clem Schmidt, who saw lim- ited action. With these were a large group of green and inexperienced boys. Together with facing four top notch conference opponents and some strong line games with Northside teams the opening prospects were not very prom- ising or encouraging. But the players and coaches set out with enthusiasm and determination to develop a Winning team. After dropping the three non-conference games to Lutheran, Kenosha and Marquette, a winning combination was developed which threatened Wash- ington and beat them in a stubborn game with the score of 23 - 29. They then defeated Custer and East, leaving us with a record of four wins and two defeats. Through the midsemester graduation King lost Halverson and Lange which deprived them of what little height they had. However, they won another game which qualified them for the city playoffs. King finished the regular conference with a standing of 500, winning five games and losing five. This was an improvement over last year's conference games record of four Wins and seven losses. The Generals then drew South as their first opponent in the city playoff, losing to them in the second quarter but making a game of it in the first half. South went on to win the city playoffs. Top Row-Spence Potter, Lowell Norman, Richard Gest, Iames Bub, Eugene LaPlante, Iohn Trgo, Frank Cosentino, Iames Meinecke, Richard Schultz. Second How-Coach Stewart, Fred Niedermeyer, Thomas Seidlitz, Gerald Dahl, Irving Malawsky, Donald Haarmann, Coach Kezele, Herbert Leppien QManagerJ. Bottom Row-Eugene Zwisler, Kenneth Liebherr, Glenn Uebersohn, Robert Kupsh, Douglas Gostchock, Carl Rady. Arthur Zimmer. Richard Deleft. FRESHMAN-SOPHOMORE BASKETBALL King's freshman-sophomore team stepped out last season to take its place among some of the best in the league. They ended With six wins and four losses. Mr. Stewart and Mr. Kezele were their coaches and they did a fine job in making this team move with coordination. We will be seeing a lot more of the fellows on that squad before the end of the forthcoming semester. Good Luck. Bill Sixty who was city medalist in the city tournament last year is again with the squad and is expected to repeat his outstanding record this year. Ioe Beck's improvement has made him another promising man on the squad. With them are two new members who will definitely be needed to put in those extra points to make theirs a winning team. We have held second in the city for the last three years, and there is reason to believe that we will do even better this year. Besides the city meet this year there will be a city handicap in which every school takes part. This will also afford all the boys a chance to play against competition. It is only proper at this time for us to express our thanks to the North Hills Country Club for the free use of their course.
