V We, the students of Rufus King high school, dedicate this annual to the memory of General Rufus King, whose ideal we have accepted as our standard to benefit the school, community, and nation - the ideal of service without anticipation of reward. General King was the first superintendent of Milwaukee schools . . . brigadier-general of the famous Iron Brigade in the Civil War . . . minister to the pontifical court in Italy for four and one- half years . . . a brilliant newspaper editor and publisher with the Milwaukee Sentinel, the New York Advertiser, and the Albany Evening Sentinel. In his whole life - as general, diplomat, editor, and school superintendent-he represented the highest type of citizen in a democracy, one who works for the common good, heedless of reward. To this man we dedicate this hook--to his ideals we dedicate ourselves. vf, X. A CAPPELLA CHOIR The l a cappe la Choir under the direction of Miss Sar- geant meets daily. This group acquaints the student with the best choral music and gives added experience for those musically talented. It appears during the year on auditorium programs. The choir has also sung at church dedications, dinners, balls, and at other schools. This year the choir was host to some of the city choruses. The Vocal Ensemble members are also chosen from the a cappella Choir. MIXED CHORUS Originally this o rga n i za tio n started as separate boys, and girls' glee clubs. Une of the purposes f h' o t is activity is to provide a training ground for students de- siring to enter acappella. The group also provides musical en- ment for those not especially ioy talented in music. The activity was created principally for those who enjoy singing, but are not a cappella members. Several recordings have been made during rehearsals to detecting aid the chorus in mistakes. Miss Sargeant is the advisor. Q W xwiisf 4 Eg f 3 Q QQ S x X, s H 45 1+ 'E sl ' 4- l .1 A, MIN 'Tl -. ,. CARTOONISTS' CLUB The Cartoonists' Club has been organized for those interested in sketching and cartooning. The skctchers work from a model or story, illustrating the main features that are brought out in the model or story. The eartoonists try to discover the underlying qualities of a cartoon. whether it be the use of facial expression or action, that makes it funny. From this, they develop their inner ehar- acters. The club meets every Thursday during the eighth period in Room 120 under the direction of Mrs. Yvard. VARSITY - THE PRESENT King's 1940 football team did not make the same record in their second season in the conference as in their first. Their record included two victories in six conference games and one non-conference win. They were harassed by injuries and hard luck all season and had to depend on juniors for a large share of the work. Waldemar Rosenthal, who was counted on as a first string end, broke a bone in his cheek and was out of uniform all season. Donald Franke, a line half- back prospect, suffered a broken hand, was out of several games, and was handi- capped by it throughout the season. Many also received injuries which kept them from playing in one or two games. Two boys were picked on the city all-conference football squad. Orlando Palesse, who played nearly every minute of all the games, was chosen as an end on the second team, James Lembck, a guard and the team captain, received honorable mention for the second straight year. The Generals opened the season against Marquette High School with a 9-7 victory. King scored first when a bad pass by the Marquette center was recov- ered in their end zone by one of their men for a safety. Polacheck added a touchdown when he recovered a blocked punt and carried it over. King lost a close defensive battle to Manitowoc in the next game by a 3-0 score. Both sides were unable to cash in on the many scoring opportunities which they had. South was the victor in King's first conference battle, scoring a 19-13 victory. South, who later won the championship, had too much power and class for the boys. King scored on several long passes. Wagner went over for the first touch- down and Schmidt for the second. King really turned on the power and rolled over North by a 19-0 score. North entered the Colds' territory only twice. Wagner scored the first touchdown on a 48-yard run. Franke scored the other two touchdowns on short plunges. King spoiled East's homecoming by defeating them 13-6. King scored on a pass from Wagner to Cernicka and on a plunge by Butz. King then played a defensive game and held East to one touchdown. King was soundly beaten in the next game by an under-dog West team, 6-0. Although the Generals had several scoring opportunities, they were not able to score. A heartbreaker was lost to a fighting Custer team by a 7-6 score. King scored first on a pass from Franke to Waldeck, but the try for the extra point was missed. Custer came back in the third quarter with a touchdown and the extra point to win the game. King ended the season by absorbing a 28-0 defeat from Washington. The Generals were not really as had as the score indicates, for the Purgolders turned several King mistakes into touchdowns. B AND FROSH The BM team had a fairly successful season with two victories and one de- feat to their credit. They defeated Custer and Lincoln by 26-0 and 14-6 scores respectively, and lost to the Cedarburg varsity 14-6. The Freshman team also had a satisfactory season. They played four games, and won two and lost two of them. ffl Top Row-Elmer Gebhard, Charles Bahde, Walter Knoelke, Bob Milke, Harold Risberg, Art Slreich, Marvin Stark, Fred Schneider, Sol Kossoris, Carl Leitzmann. Eight of their victories were scored against conference opponents, and they ended the season in third place. Un the Sentinel team, Melichar made the second team while Harold Diers, Orlando Palesse, Elmer Cernicka, and Howie Kallenberger were given honor- able mention. The Generals were a high scoring team, averaging 35.5 points in conference games. Their total of 390 points was the highest in the league. The results are as follows: Marquette: King lost the first game of the season, 46-41. The Catholic champions were too strong for the blue and gold eagers. Kenosha: A 34-27 defeat was handed to the Big Eight champions. King showed its class for the first time in the season. Cudahy: Another victory ehalked up, 38-27. The Cudahy boys were not in King's class. Washington: King's first conference victory, 25-16. The first time a King team ever defeated Washington in a major sport. Practically all the letter and chevron winners of this season will be back next year. With a majority of the dual meets won, and a respectable showing in the larger meets, it was deemed a successful season by the coaches. The season opened auspiciously with a 75-29 win over North. Bob Richardson took both the shot and the discus. The first loss was sustained to a strong Marquette prep team, 74-39. Again Richardson was a double winner. In the King Relays, now in its third season, we took second place back of Custer. At the finish it was Custer 88, King four points behind, 84, Pulaski 58, Lincoln 50, Juneau 44, and North 34. King set a new record in the high hurdles. C ln the Waukesha Relays King took fifth place in a field of eleven. Richardson won his two events and accounted for half of King's 22 points. Jack Gardner was second in the shot-put. In the first triangular meet in King history, with Bay View and East, our cinder men were successful, beating East and Bay View. Elmer Gebhard, only a sophomore, who turned in wins in the half mile at the start of the season. Later he was transferred to the 440. The Frosh-Soph and MB teams posted wins against Custer and Shore- wood. The B team lost to Washington. The tracksters snared sixth place in the State Meet at Madison. In this meet John Whitehouse copped first place in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, SM inches. We finished third among city schools, with Washington repeating its last year's win.
