After the students have learned all the sufficient techniques of the club, they are given a license which permits them to run anv projector in the school. i Household Arts The Household Arts service under the supervision of Bliss Heise meets every Tuesday in room 205. This department takes care of all the costumes which belong to the school. They sort the costumes, giving each costume a number. During dress rehearsals of productions they take care of the costumes being used, by pressing, sewing and any other repairs that might be needed. Ifveryone depends on the Household Arts service when plays are put on and I'm sure we could not get along without their splendid work. Industrial Arts The Industrial Arts Service sponsored by Mr. McElroy, meets Wednesday and Thurs- day of every week the eighth hour. The club does repair work throughout the building and makes small articles needed by the different departments. At present the service is con- structing panels of fence to be used to separate the dance floor from the rest of the cafeteria. If need be the club helps the Stage Service Club with the building of stage scenery and properties. Cadet Service Vie are all proud of our cadets who are under the super- vision of Mr, Foti and Mr, Hanks, and the counselors who have done a very excellent job in instructing them. Several homcrooms have aided the cadets in their work, and with their cooperation their duties have been made simpler, for they have taken the responsibil- ity of keeping our campus and grounds neat and clean and have also taken care of the auditor- ium. VVe have acknowledged this over the public address system. Creative Dancing The Creative Dancing Club, which is directed by Miss Lud- wig, meets every VVednesday from 2:30 to 3:45. It is com- posed of 50 girls from all grades. In this club the girls are taught exercises to develop the body and then make up their own dances. Part of the time is spent on the technique of the dance, and the other half of the hour the girls form groups of their own in which they create their own steps. Cartoonists Al Capp, Gil Meyer or TYalt Disney are due for a bit of rivalry in the art of cartooning. The Cartoonist Club which meets during the 8th hour on Thursdays in room 119 has planned a program by which its members may receive prac- tical experience and advice in the art. The class is divided into two sections: one in which its ntembers sketch and one in which the up-and-coming il- lustrating iokesters draw earica- tures. The organization is under the able direction of Hrs. XVard. umor Camera The members of the junior Camera Club meet every other Thursday in room 114. It is here that the students are taught the fundamentals of photography. They begin by learning thc various parts ofthe camera. and how to operate them. The pic- tures are then taken, and the film is developed in the dark rooms. which were provided for this purpose. After thc film is developed. positive prints arc then made. This activity is un- der the direction of Nlr. john- son. There are forty-nine stu- dents in this club. umor Dramatics The junior Dramatic Club has been making fine progress this year, and is so large it meets in two sections. The members of these groups are under the direction of Miss Sehwanberg and Mrs. Roemer. They meet every Monday in 414. These groups have gone one step further than usual in writing their own scripts for plays they are practicing on. Among other things they are giving pantomimes, short radio skits in small groups, and are learning something about make- up. Cheer Leaders The purpose of the cheer leaders is to pep up our football and basketball games, and other athletic events. Since the en- trance of King in the City Con- ference, this activity has become very popular and, because of the great number who have joined, only a few are selected to cheer at each game. Anyone is eligible to join the cheer leaders who meet regularly for rehearsal before athletic events. Nlr. Rutherford is the super- visor. Stage Service During two eighth hour ae- tivity periods a week, after school, and on call, the stage service club meets under the direction and supervision of Mr. Charette. The members of this club make the scenery for our productions, create beautiful lighting effects and provide the brawn for the swift moving of stage settings between scenes during a production. All boys who join this activity are re- quired to have at least one semester of shop work, Senior Camera The Senior Camera Club meets under the able guidance of Mr. Hunter. It is in this club that the students secure pictures for our King's Page and our Year Book. Occasionally outside speaker's pictures arcisecured. Many of the members have personal developing setsg but those who donit may use the dark room. There are thirty- three students in this club. This particular activity meets every other Thursday in room 303. i You Cafrft Take lt With Tomi' The Pulitzer prize play, You Can't Take lt With You, was presented at Rufus King November 23-24, and the play that ran on Broadway for two years was hailed as a huge success bv the thron s of students who attended the erformances. Miss Pfeffer was in char e of the , d D g P 3 pro uction. The settin of the lav is the home of Martin Vanderhof. The room is what is customarily . g . . Our faculty was well represented on the stage. Mr. Rutherford, Miss Barry, and Mr. Zimmer- man all had parts in the three-act play. And the main character of the production, the man who positively refused to work, was ably portrayed by Mr. Born. Chanda Ch0nita, a gypsy operetta in three acts, was presented at Rufus King on April IZ and 13. The operetta was directed by Miss Currie and Miss Sargeant. Miss Kenney was the general manager. The first and third acts took place in a gypsy camp in which two newly procured covered wagons were used. The second act was set in the ornate Stanescu home in Budapest. Gypsies and guests in the Stanescu home were played by members of the a cappella chorus. A portion of the Senior Orchestra furnished musical accompaniment. Properties were managed by Miss Mervash, Miss Schwanberg and student assistants. Mr. Charctte headed the stage crew which managed the lighting and changed scenes. The stage light- ing was augmented by the carbon arc spotlight used here for the first time by four Visual Service cadets. There were more than z,ooo tickets sold for the operetta, which grossed over Ego. Expenses for the music, make-up, curtain, stage scenery, costumes, the moving of the piano, and the printing of tickets and programs totaled 5250, and the remainder was used to purchase choir gowns. The season ended with a record of seven Wins in eight games. King gathered further honors by having four players named on all-city team. They are co-captains Mel Maceau, center, and Frank Riewer, back, Art Wisth, tackle, and Ed Wenninger, end. jack Gardner. The season opened with Coach George Wolf's boys scoring an 18 to 7 victory over Marquette High in a night game at the Marquette University Stadium. Riewer scored two touchdowns and passed to Wenninger for the other marker. In another non-conference game the Generals beat Menomonee Falls to the tune of zo to 7. Rievver galloped 45 yards for the first score and then Ray Schaetz went over from the 4 yard line for the second touchdown. A pass, Riewer to Regenfuss, accounted for the last touchdown. Little Matt Trgo pulled a sleeper to enable King to win its first game in the City Conference. The score was Rufus King 7-East 0. King threatened on numerous other occasions but fumbled. Next came the 16 to I4 heartbreaker with Washington which cost King the championship. Riewer scored two touchdowns early in the first period, and YVenninger and Trgo made extra points to give the Generals a I4 to o lead which they held until late in the game. Pat Harder scored two touchdowns, an extra point, and a field goal to give the Purgolders the game. King trounced Tech, zo to o in its next contest. The first two touchdowns were manufactured by Riewer, and the third came on a pass, jim Rossow to Schaetz. Wenninger booted the two extra points. .a.y...........,. 1 -'LL f ' if Tor Row: Robert Curley, Ed Wenninger, Frank Riewer CCO-captainb, Alois Vogt, Ted Block, Donald Durr, Orlando Palesse, Walter Zweifel Ulflanagerb, Coach Hanks. Passes set the stage for another touchdown in the final stanza by Riewer. Wenninger was again responsible for adding King's two extra points. After a scoreless first half King put on the pressure to down West, IQ to 6. Riewer scored the first two touchdowns and passed to Norm Waldeck for the third. King brought its highly successful season to a close with an 18 to o triumph over Lincoln. Riewer, who finished second in scoring in the conference, was again the most outstanding man on the field. He made all three markers. King's line held Lincoln without a first down. The King B team composed of future varsity players broke even in the 1939 season, winning two games and losing two. The Bee team opened its campaign by defeating Lincoln, 7-6 in a hotly contested game. Bilek made both touchdowns in the King win over Custer, 13-o. A strong Pulaski aggregation proved too much for the Kingmen for their Hrst loss of the season, 14-7. Washington was the victor in the last game of the season 7-o in which the Kingers were unable to score. The Freshman-Sophomore team made a clean sweep of its four scheduled games winning them all with a safe margin. King ....... I3 ....... East 7 King... ...13 ....... Lincoln .. o King... ...13... ....
