CHORUS Say it with a song, seems to be the motto of the A Cappella Choir. This group is composed of students with the most promising voices at King. Last Christmas this group was invited to sing over WTMI and two recordings were made. From there they caroled throughout the downtown shopping district. Students from the choir took part in the Biennial Music Festival. Several members formed a vocal group and sang at Boys Prevocational School, Riverside, Keele Ave. School and the Y.W.C.A. The choir sang for commencement exercises which were held in the stadium. - 80 .- Top Row: Donald Morris, Lawrence Ebert, Gerald Kuehn, Phil Berman., Charles Groskopf, Robert Behrs. Allen Rex. The club this year was limited to forty students and it met every Tuesday. The science, social science, and English classes and almost every other class have in some Way or other been provided with films or slides to help them in studying their subject. The club has constructed a projector which is used in providing dance music for the mixers, the loud speaker in the stadium, and in the auditorium. After the students have learned all the sufficient techniques of the club, they are given a license which permits them to run any projector in the school. l Top Row: Fred Gennrich, Merriam Blattler, Charlotte Siedschlag, Marcella Griebling, Ruth Moldenhauer, Noreen White. FOOTBALL Although Country Day defeated the Rufus King gridders in the final game of the season, King had the best football year in the short history of the school. The Kingmen Wound- up the season with a record of five wins and two losses, including in their list of victims Custer and Tech of the City Conference. King opened the season at Sheboygan and avenged a previous 14-14 tie by soundly trouncing Central High, 13-0. Riewer scored both touchdowns. The home team continued on its winning ways by crushing Shorewood, 18-0. Captain Weliky climaxed a 60-yard march by ramming over from the three yard line. From the Shorewood 23 Riewer veered off tackle into the end zone, and near the end of the half, Shaetz Went over from the 10. The first defeat came at the hands of Oshkosh High at Oshkosh, 23-12. Oshkosh scored all its points in the first half, King gathering theirs in the third and fourth periods. King played host to unbeaten Marquette High, Catholic Conference preps, by defeating them 21-6. Vogt, Maertzweiler, and Wenninger scored the three extra points. In the next game King scored a decisive victory over Tech, 26-O. The four touchdowns were made by Vogt, Riewer, Weliky, and Eckmann, who took a pass from Riewer on the 15 and hot-footed it to the goal. In the Custer game, the Blue and Gold staged a touchdown drive in the last quarter to break the 0-0 tie. Riewer tossed a pass to Maertzweiler on the one, and from there plunged over. A short pass to Maertzweiler was good for the extra point. Although 16 seniors were playing their last game, King went down to defeat, 13-7, before an unbeaten, keyed-up Country Day team. Rufus King is now entered in the city conference. - 94 - 1 A M M A , i 195.- i Top Row: Edward Haugh, Harvey Schramm, Robert La Bell, Frank Mackett, Carl Gerten. The games were played on Saturday mornings and took place in the following order: Iuneau l King O7 Custer 2 King lg Pulaski 2 King 0: Custer 3 King 2: Pulaski 0 King 21 Iuneau 4 King 2. There was a turn out of 70 boys all of which were kept throughout the season. The Iuneau game, although it was a loss, was the best game of the season. The only Win of the season was the hard fought Pulaski game. There will be a large loss of first string players in the lineup next year due to graduation. FENCING The fencing club has existed in Rufus King for the last four years. Its purpose is primarily to develop poise, agility and alertness in its followers. This club is conducted by Mr. Kurtz, who was a member of the fencing team of The University of Wisconsin. lt has not had com- petition with other schools this year, but its members have competed with great success in the city and state tournaments. The veterans of the club are lames Mortier and Karl Wegener, Ruth Blum and Geraldine Fischer. Walter Fruhman, Edward Trampe, William Buntrock, Lamont Engle, Annette Behrre, Ruth Blum, Geraldine Fischer, Virginia Miller. -gg- Walter Luedke, Fred Zimmerman, Dan O'Gorman, Iohn Griffin, Warren Giese, Dan Giller, Maurice Iensen, Roland Merz, Robert Kintzler, Maxwell Andrae, Robert Viehweq TENNIS TEAM The tennis team this year won matches from Lincoln, West, Pulaski. and North but was defeated by Iuneau, East, Custer, South, and Washington. Coach Kurtz views next year's prospects with satisfaction because the present team consists almost entirely of promising sophomores and junors, the only seniors being Maurice Iensen, Roland Merz, and Daniel Giller. The tennis future of sophomore Warren Giese looks especially bright for he has already defeated some of the city's best players. The doubles team of Iensen and Merz remained undefeated. GOLF TEAM The golf team has emerged with fairsuccess from its round of practice matches with con- ference toes this year. They include South, Custer, Juneau, East, and Washington. Mr. Scharf, the coach, regards this years' team as one of the best he has ever coached at King. Graduation will leave almost the entire team open for newcomers next year. Most of this year's matches were played at Brown Deer Park and Currie Park. Coach Scharf, George Roush, Leroy Lambrecht, Milton Gerhardt, Kenneth Heyman, Robert Luedke .-QQ? ARCHEBY Archery is the newest of sports introduced at King this year. Only those boys and girls who owned their own equipment could participate. The club members bought two targets by having each contribute a small fee. Instruction was given to those who had never used a bow and arrow before, while those who were more experienced were permitted to shoot im- mediately. Miss Currie and Miss Ludwig are in charge of the group which meets during the eighth period on Mondays. GYM TEAM The Gym Team, under the supervision of Mr. Wolf, has experienced a very successful year. The senior division of the gym team placed third in the city meet while the sophomores came in second in the sophomore meet. The purpose of the gym team is to develop skill in manuever- ing on the parallel bars, horizontal bars, and other gymnastic apparatus. Participation on the gym team has recently been recognized as a major sport and letters will be presented to the deserving members. - -100- U2H'FUO UU2 GIRLS' TENNIS 9 cl? 10-Miss Barry, a new teacher at King, taught the girls' tennis classes this year. There were over 200 girls participating in the junior group which met every Tuesday during the eighth hour in the gym and on the tennis courts. They were instructed in the funda- mentals of the different strokes and methods of holding the racket. A tournament was held at the end of the season to determine the class champions. GIRLS' BASKETBALL 9 6? 10-Basketball was a favorite sport among the ninth and tenth grade girls. It was one of the many sports held after school during the winter season. After several weeks of practice, teams were chosen to play in a round robin tournament. A special feature was the tournament between classes, when every ninth grade team had as its opponent one of the tenth grade teams. According to observers the ninth grade showed up unusually well. GIRLS' FENCING-Mr. Kurtz was in charge of the fencing classes. They met every Wednes- day in the Boys' Gym. There were over fifty girls taking part in the activity. Mr. Kurtz first taught them how to stand and hold the foils. After that he showed them how to charge and dodge. Instead of using the regular equipment they used sticks shaped like a sword. The fencing class stopped after the warm weather came. GIRLS' GOLF-The first golf class was held about the middle of April. The girls met every Thursday in 107 until the class could be taken out-of-doors. About forty girls participated throughout the season. Miss Ludwig taught them the fundamentals of the various strokes and the etiquette of the golf course. The class practiced on the Lincoln Park Golf Course after they had mastered some of the elementary technique. GIRLS' TENNIS 11 df 12-A large number of girls participated in the senior tennis class this spring under the direction of Miss Barry. The activity gathered during the eighth period on Wednesdays for regular instruction, and many of the girls remained after school for further practice. Since many of the members of the class had played tennis before, the instruction given was largely a matter of individual correction. A class tournament completed the season. GIRLS' SWIMMING-A group of thirty girls met every Tuesday at the Center Street Nata- torium. Miss Ludwig was in charge of the class. During the first semester the girls were taught how to dive and swim. During the second semester the class was shown the fundamentals of Life-Saving and Water Safety. A certificate is awarded to all those who pass the various tests at the end of the year. GIRLS' BASKETBALL 11 df 12-The eleventh and twelfth grade girls played basketball every Monday during the eighth hour with Miss Ludwig in charge. The girls chose their own captains and formed separate teams. These teams competed in a round robin tournament, each team playing against every other team. All the refereeing and umpiring was done by the girls in the class who were interested in becoming basketball officials.
