DEAR MEMBERS OF THE FACULTY: As each of us leaves the school this June, we will experience many different feelings, but our overwhelming sentiment will be one of gratitude to those who have made us aware of the vast frontiers which have yet to be explored, and who have awakened in us the desire to learn for the sake of knowledge alone. Those of us who have come through the elementary school remember a time when a Steiner High School was nothing but a dream, when the eighth grade was the pinnacle of all achievements, and when Mr. Harrer was the biggest, strongest, most important man in the whole world. None of us will forget the sudden inspiration that might have gripped us during a high school language, history, math or art class, nor will we forget Mr. Pratt's gentle guidance. But above all, we are grateful for the devotion, regardless of how trying the times might have been, to the idea that there was something good and worthwhile in each of us, which brought to the surface. More than anything else, this faith has enabled us to develop into what we are today. It is difficult to realize that our years at Steiner have come to an end. They have been full and edifying years, and we have enjoyed them. We are indebted to all of you for making our school life as rich as it has been: Mc f 04154, FQQMA 7L f2fzf LK2ff445d, M006 .J ,QQ W Aga. Amt if fsffwffaff ' -,fi . Dear Seniors of 1961 - All manner of trite things could be said concerning the significance this year will have for you, but I hoperunone will inflict the traditional graduation platitudes upon you. All the faculty are naturally and deeply concerned with where and how you go from here, but I would like, in this yearbook letter, to wonder a little at the fact of your being here at all and at the course that brought you here. What significance can be found in this confluence of personalities, this gathering together of twenty-one human beings into what will ever be known as the Class of 1961? If all events must be attributed to chance or accident, then futile indeed is man's search for his purpose and his freedom. Let us abandon the notion, without disproof, and seek more fruitfully. Try this: trace back, each of you, the thread of your life, hand over hand, as it were, untangling the knots as you reach them. See how your classmates' lives diverge from yours as you recede into the dimness of childhood memory, until finally you can see no further. Return again, retie the knots. How was it that you came to be here, in this school, this class, sharing these experiences with these friends? And what is the thread of your life? Is it simply a track you have helplessly followed, or is it perhaps you, yourself, at every instant of your life, meeting aspects of the world according to your need, struggling, solving, acting according to your insight? Now here you all are, individual human beings, yet together forming, creating the personality of your class. But heren is a very specific entity. It also has its thread, and we can trace it back, in at least one meaningful way, exactly one century to 1861, the birthyear of Rudolf Steiner. In a sense, this school has come to meet your lives over 100 years and across an ocean, and change has occurred through the meeting. You have given much to the school, not least of all the imprint of your quality as a class, and for this we are grateful. Ch the other ha d, what Rudolf Steiner initiated has influenced your lives, some more, some less, in varying ways. One does not know how your meeting together with this school will work into the future. We can only hope that your experience here will bear sweet fruit for you in time to come. With all good wishes, Fbndly and sincerely yours, , , .At K . .NJ gafifytef fbcliffvb Swain Pratt
