We elected Mr. Fisher as our class sponsor. Our school plant facilities consisted of the vocational building. In March, we moved into the new building. We had the privilege of being the ,first Freshman Class to go into the new school building. The upperclassmen entertained , the Freshman Class with a picnic and initiation at the Kershner Dam. Two members of the Sophomore Class, Wanda Parrott and Loretta Price, had the honor of assisting the Juniors in presenting their Junior Play. We elected Joe Blattner as our class sponsor. He has continued this task as sponsor for the last three years: much to his regret. The Sophomores violated school regulations by attending a show in Kinsley. Richard Wagner and Joe Blattner were in HOT WATER! AND HOW! ? ? During the Junior year, the class entertained themselves with two class parties. In April, the members presented the play Private Secretary, which was delayed because Bill Winkler had the flu. It was directed by Mrs. Pennington. Our Junior-Senior Banquet was given on May 3--the theme was Hitch Your Wagon To A Star. All the class of '53 returned to school in September with the ex- ception of Wanda Stiles. We gave our Senior Play, Father Be Calm, on November 21, before a large audience. Miss Spreier was the director. The Senior Class voted to publish an annual, Tiger Memories, and after much fun and a great deal of work, was com- pleted with the assistance of the entire Senior Class and our sponsor, Mr. Blattner. Four members of our class played on the basketball team which had a successful season--going all the way to the Regionals before being eliminated by Deerfield--winner of the Regional Tourna- ment. We left Tuesday, April Z6, for Colorado on our Senior Trip. We covered many points of interest in Pueblo, Canon City, Royal Gorge, Colorado Springs, and Denver. We returned home Sunday, May 3. It was a very happy group of Seniors who received their diplomas the evening of May 14. We will always have many pleasant memories of Rozel High School. 1 Z t A--Ambitions. . . B --Bashful .... . The trip proved to be educational the very first hour. On packing the cars our sponsor demonstrated one of the laws of physics, that no two objects can occupy the same space at the same time. Thus after considerable cramming, jamming and repacking--one suitcase was left behind and the trip was finally begun. Poor Karl Smithg he had the unlucky lot of providing transportation for the ladies ex- cepting Mrs. Winkler. As far as we know, to this date, no one man has ever had more back seat and front seat drivers. The drivers of the two other vehicles realized Karl's misfortune but were very careful not to express any desire to exchange passengers. Can you imagine trying to drive through a busy city with five back seat drivers. The first leg of our trip proved rather uneventful with the exception of a couple of inci- dents. A very heavy dust storm was encountered between Hanston and Jetmore and at Garden City a halt was made for a pause that refreshes ! COKES! Our caravan arrived in'Pueblo about 8:30 P.M. and after taking a few wrong turns, our motel was found. Earl Brock, Bobby Webster's cousin entertained the boys at his home where many of them saw their first television. The remainder of the group spent the evening watching television at their motel. About 6:30 Wednesday morning our party regrouped for breakfast at their motel, and then proceeded to hunt the Colorado Iron and Fuel Works. Thanks to Mr. Smith we found it with only a couple hours driving. The tour of the iron and steel plant which covers 640 acres and employes 2.5, 000 personnel proved to be one of the high lights of the trip. The tour of the iron works was completed about twelve o'clock after which we journeyed to Canon City and had dinner at the Ranch House. In the afternoon our group inspected the State Penitentiary. Most people have trouble leaving a penn, but Harry Winkler, who had filled his pockets with nails and souvenirs from the iron works, had trouble getting passed the electric eye and just about didn't get in. The next point of interest was the drive over the Skyline Driveg to most of us the road at times seemed far too narrow and the ditches far too deep. Following the Skyline Drive, the Royal Gorge was next on our list. Everyone enjoyed the thrilling ride to the bottom of the Gorge in the cable cars, then some walked while others drove across the highest bridge in the world. After this experience we returned to our Motel in Canon City. The boys will never forget supper that night at the Royal Bar--the food--poor, the cost--high, and the service--slow. After considerable debate as to what the evenings entertainment should includeg everyone decided to drive to Florence and pay Kenneth Patterson and his family a visit. Thursday, we drove to Colorado Springs, upon arrival our first stop was to visit the Will Rogers Shrine. After visiting the Shrine, the boys decided to do some mountain climbing which would have been fine, except that it was prohibited. The woman in charge at the Shrine tried to excite the sponsors by telling them the boys would start a rock slide. But you know Joe and Karl, they just wou1dn't budge. Joe kept telling her to RELAXI On our way down the mountain from the Shrine the group visited the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. The monkey house proved to be the greatest interest--wonder why? Next we drove around the Broadmore Hotel. After dinner in Manitou Springs the party visited the Cave of the Winds and then drove through the Garden of the Gods. The occupants of one car QJoe'sj finally became so disgusted with the horn honking on every turn that Bobby Murphy disconnected it. With the evening approaching, we drove to the Bel Air Motel and then later all went to a movie. The following morning after an early breakfast, our party drove to Denver. Here the trip consisted of visiting the Museum of Natural History. Harry Winkler talked to one guard so long that the guard finally gave him part of his own personal rock collection so that he would let him go. The group enjoyed lunch in the Capitol Buildingg that is everyone except Keith. Keith turned up on the sick list and didn't enjoy that day's activities. The afternoon. was spent shopping and visiting the Federal Reserve Bank, where everyone for a moment held a million dollar bill. On leaving the Federal Reserve Bank all the women were ushered into an elevator and told how to operate it. Everything worked swell except when they arrived at the lower floor the door didn't open. Were they dumbfounded when a gentleman at the door behind them asked, Do you need any help? Our next stop was the Shirley-Savoy Hotel where everyone enjoyed several hours rest. Reservations were made for dinner and dancing at the Emerald Room in the Brown Palace Hotel. The majority of the party for the first time enjoyed a five course dinner, after which several members danced to the music of Lou Morgan's orchestra. Saturday morning everyone went up the Daniel Fisher tower which provides the sight- seer an opportunity to view surrounding territory several hundred miles away. Several hours later our party took off for the Municipal Airport where all enjoyed watching the planes come and go. After dinner a visit was made to the Red Rock Amphitheater. We traveled through a snow storm back to Colorado Springs. By this time everyone was becoming rather tired. Saturday evening the class had a final get-together with a dinner at the Craftwood Inn in the mountains near Manitou Springs. Most of the group retired for an evening's rest--that is between the interruptions made by several members of the party who thought they wanted to start for home at 4:30 in the morning. Sunday morning we bid farewell to Colorado Springs and vicinity and started the journey home. Our homeward trip included one incident that bears mentioning. Due to the driver of the leading car, fJoe'sJ the third car at times had to drive in excess of the speed limit. Seems as though a highway patrolman noticed this fact and hailed the last car. Boy, were the women frightened. No ticket--just fifty-four miles per hour in a fifty mile an hour speed zone. A very tired but happy group arrived home about 6:30 P.M. All the class members and sponsors enjoyed the trip very much and feel that it was educational as well as a lot of fun. We, the Senior Class wish to thank everyone that made this trip possible.
