Enthusiastic crowds lined the streets to watch the homecoming floats and queen candidates as they paraded by. Highlighting the evening events was the Redbird vs Winchester game. Loyal fans cheered their teams to a 14-14 tie. Half- time entertainment included a program, Viva Vodvil, performed by the high school marching band. Golden Autumn, a dance sponsored by the Royerton Alumni Association, followed the game. At ten o ' clock, trophies were given for the best three floats in the morn- ing parade. Let ' s Needle ' em, the FHA float, won the third place trophy. Sail ' em Under, the senior class float, was awarded the second prize. The first place trophy winner, Cage that Falcon, was sponsored by the freshman class. Immediately following these awards, Miss Janice Hutchinson was crowned the 1964 Homecoming Queen, by last year ' s queen. Miss Beth Thompson. Janny is an active member of Foreign Language Club and Honor Society. She has been a cheerleader for three years and has also represented Royerton at Girls ' State. Redbird conducts funeral services for down-trodden Falcons. Silhouettes of Sweethearts was the theme of the sixth annual FHA Sweetheart Ball. Miss Nancy Hoover was crowned FHA queen by last year ' s queen, Madlyn Newby. Her Majesty was presented a dozen red roses. Princess for the evening ' s festivities was Sue Harris. Also nominated for queen were Diane Chu and Karen Stevens, seniors. Other members of the court were Charlene Johnson, junior, Gleta Gad- dis, sophomore, and Susan Gates, freshman. Principal This year at Royerton has been a very busy one. Aside from the many class activi- ties, the students have participated in many educational extracurricular activities. The Guidance Department has given students a wide range testing program. The Mathemat- ics Department sent students to a contest sponsored by the Mathematics Association of America. A paperback book store was an added attraction made possible by the Eng- lish Department. The production of the mus- ical, Oklahoma, highlighted the year for those in the Music Department. The Home Economics Department has contributed its year to the solution of problems presented by high school drop-outs. The annual Model U.N. was attended by some of the history students. The Business Department again sent representatives to the Thrift Forum. Spanish and Latin students also participated in the foreign language contests. We, the students of Royerton, are deeply indebted to the faculty for their unselfish struggles to prepare each of us for our futures. HOWARD KARDATZKE Head Coach 36 TOM DEWITT Ass ' t Coach Finish Season With Victory Over Geneva Although the Redbirds ended the 1963 football season with a 1-6-1 record, team and school spirit and enthusiasm increased tremendously throughout the campaign. Responsible for much of the determination was Coach Howard Kardatzke, and assistant coach, Tom De Witt. The Redbirds concluded their rugged eight-game schedule with a lop-sided victory over Geneva. In the homecoming tilt, the Redbird eleven salvaged a tie with Winchester. Lettermen who will be absent from the local gridiron next season are Richard Burt and Terry Poland, tackles; John Carter, quarterback; John Holbert, guard; and Chuck Taylor, halfback. Also graduating are Bob Ceilings and Steve Cook, managers. Chuck Taylor and Ted Dixon were placed on the all-conference first team in the AAississinewa Valley Conference. Given honorable mention in the AAVC was John Carter. Squad members selected Chuck Taylor as the most valuable player of the year. Terry Taylor received the defensive award. Look out below 37 Birds Win Fourth MVC Title Finishing with a sparl ling 5-0 conference record, the Redbird Quin- tet captured their fourth coveted Mississinewa Valley crown in five years. The MVC champions grabbed the runner-up spot in the annual Delaware County Tourney, succumbing to the Selma Bluebirds in the championship game. The Redbird netters cut down county powers Cowan, Yorktown, and Gaston to compete in the title contest. Completing their roundball campaign with an impressive 20-5 mark, the towering Birds conquered tough foes like Alexandria, Dun- kirk, Hagerstown, Mississinewa, Portland and Winchester. Height, com- bined with aggressiveness, enthusiasm, and sportsmanship figured prominent as the local perennial power overcame its smaller oppo- nents. The Royertonites gained runner-up honors in the sectional tourna- ment falling to favored Muncie Southside in a hard-fought battle. The Birds qualified for the finale by crushing Albany and Daleville. The GAA squad defeated Eaton twice by wide margins. They also battled with a tall, experi- enced Marion team. The girls spent many morning hours practicing before school began. Leading the production crew of the Panorama have been the editor, Kay Browning, and her assistant, Sharon Butler. Drafting lay-outs, cropping and snapping pictures, writing interesting captions for pictures have been among their duties. These girls, however, did not work alone. The entire staff concentrated its ef- forts to meet its rapidly approaching deadlines. Dixie Roeger, Sally Huxhold, Diane Randall, and Karen Stevens, fea- ture editors. UPPER: Kay Browning, Panorama, editor-in-chief; Sharon Butler, ass ' t editor. LOWER: Larry Burns, Review, editor-in-chief; Cella Carter, ass ' t editor. Joyce Weesner and Rose Geyman, activities editors. 64 GEO. PHELPS, sports editor Essential in Producing; ' 64 Publications The yearbook completes only one-half of the publications story. A newspaper was also published. The Royerton Review was edited by Larry Burns. His assistant was Celia Carter. But, here again, the entire staff offered its help. Writing interesting news and feature stories, drafting news- paper lay-outs, and meeting newspaper deadlines were a few of the essential tasks in producing this year ' s Royerton Review. Soliciting adds for the Panorama, selling cokes at ball games, sponsoring record hops, and scouting for good news stories are projects which have been enjoyed by every participant on the Journalism staff. Janet Turner and Cheryl Romey, elementary editors. Janet Gibson and Ricky Roach, advertising managers. Cindy DeBatty, June Byers, Sandy Slacey, and Sharon Lawson, news editors. 65 FOREIGN LANGUAGE CLUB ROW ONE: L. Allen, J. Smith, M. Evans, B. Price, P. Bruin, S. Riggin, J. Turner, C. Carter, K. FHA provides opportunities for students to have additional ex- periences in planning and carrying out activities related to homemaking. One of the public relations activities this year was the distribution of Thanksgiving baskets. The theme for the voluntary state project of FHA was Sacrifice for Others. This year FHA adopted children from Athens, Lebanon, and France, along with two American Indians from New Mexico and Arizona. With the guidance of the FHA sponsors, Mrs. Hughes and Miss Boots, the FHA planned many successful activities. The annual Sweetheart Ball and Sadie Hawkins Dance high- lighted the year. Contests Required Many Extra Band Rehearsals The opening of school began another busy year for the High School Band. Sunrise rehearsals and after school hours provided the additional practice for the football and basketball half-time shows. For the football shows, the band played up the good ol ' days. Such a selection was the homecoming rouser, Viva Vodvil. On the basketball court, the band with the Pom Pom Corps told The Story of Jazz. As a final salute, the combined bands of the elementary, junior high, and high school totaling some 197 pieces demonstrated the talent in our begin- ners. As a final effort the band began preparing diligently for the annual State Band Contest. In addition the band performed at Indiana Univer- sity and Ball State Band days. The highlight of the musical year was the annual presentation of April Showers. 75 All together now— one— two— three! Band gets ready to perform at half-time TWIRLERS M. Williams, J. Showalter, S.
