One hundred and sixty-tive strong, the girls' pep club played an important part in urging our Redbirds to victory this season. The club yelled at all home games and went to the Mississinewa and York- town ball games. Tourney time found the cheering block the center of attention. Clever skits and tunes were composed to popular TV slogans and songs, in- cluding HG r e e n D o o r, l Dreamed, Cindy, Oh Cindy, and The Money Tree. Mrs. Mildred Marcus sponsored and directed the organization. 1' ' v If

Redbirds' '56 and '57 varsity basketball team: Kneeling: Loyd Penrod, principal, coaches Gordon StauFfer and Myron Dickerson. Standing: Slusher, Penrod, Kerper, Bruin, Wright, Combs, Crockett, Unger, Budd, Locke, and Teboe. REDBIRDS SEE ACTION ON THE HARDWGOD The 1956-57 varsity basketball team had a difficult time converting from the gridiron to the basketball court. This factor, along with the team's inability to hit their free throws, accounted forthe Redbird's slow start. However, with the coming of the county tourney, coaches, Gordon Stauffer and Myron Dickerson, prepped their boys to the peak of their season's play. After defeating Center, Harrison, and Cowan, the Red- birds advanced to the final game in the tourney, losing to Gaston by a close score of 60 to 53. The Redbirds scored a total of 1388 points this season for an average of 57.83 points per game. Oddly 24 enough, their opponents amassed the same number of points. Much of the team's success came from a well balanced scoring attack. The Redbirds who scored over 200 points were Bruin with 283, Locke with 261, and Combs with 230. Also pushing the 200 point bracket was Wright with 193. After reaching their stride, the Redbirds continued to play a winning brand of basketball. Although their sea- son record was only fair, the Redbirds displayed the true marks of sportsmanship and put forth their best efforts in each and every game.
