'ii P--ev--ww. 2 'Elf THIS IS RCDYERTON S STUDENTS entered the doors of Royerton in August, they realized many changes had been made. The old assembly had been converted into several classrooms in order to create more space for the grow- ing student body. The need for longer class periods resulted in a new day with seven fifty-five minute periods. A new principal, Mr. Loyd G. Penrod, and eleven new teachers were introduced to the l700 Royertonites. One can hardly deny that the classroom and its functions are the nuclei of any school. Yet, it is evident that the many other activities ofa high school are the sustaining factors which strike a comparatively equal balance between the humdrum and the lively. The old adage All work and no play make Jack a dull boy, cannot be applied to Royerton High School. Experiences in extracurricular activities at R.H.S. provide endless opportunities for fun and friendship. The clubs, dances, and other school func- tions furnish outlets for our excess time and energy. Many students participate in the band, choir, glee clubs, and many other organizations. A broad athletic program teaches us the value of sportsmanship. Both boys and girls have opportunity for physical development through an indoor-outdoor sports schedule. These activities, combined in a well balanced manner, provide the student with rich experiences that will add to his mental and physical stature. Each class engages in various projects in addition to routine scholastic functions. Underclassmen are busy with money-making schemes for the eagerly awaited senior trip. By participating in these activities, pupils learn the arts of co-operation and self- adiustment. TABLE OF CONTENTS Opening Section ..,... Sports ...... Activities ..... People .,... Advertisement ...... Mrs. Werner and Mr. Harris take time out to catch up on the news. When Royerton's expanding student body crowded its way out of the high school assembly, the school officials began to realize the pressing demand for nine classrooms. The building received not only a new face lifting, but additional new school furniture was placed in several of the classrooms. Need for a larger typing room resulted in another new look. Two classrooms were merely rearranged and presto -this accommodation made available space for ten new typewriters. Thirty-two adiustable typing desks were placed in the room. A new principal's office was re-located in the iunior high building, one of the classrooms being partitioned for this purpose. A time-saving device, in the form ofa public address system, was installed for the new school year. Speakers were located throughout the building including the elemen- tary rooms, ianitors' rooms, cafeteria, and the gym. 4 The young and the young at heart all join in the fun of the iunior carnival. ...L.........L,,,,.,,, Y: What! HIGHLIGHTING HEALTH In the interest of safety to the pupils, a school intirmary was established this year. Situated in the iunior high building, the tirst aid room is equipped for minor iniuries. Mrs. Carolyn Buchanan, R.N., is on duty throughout the day. She works under the authorization of Doctor Richard Ko, school doctor, who is on call for serious emergencies. Doctor Ko also directs the school immunization program. Mrs. Buchanan treated over 1500 students in a three month period, averag- ing 26 daily. The greatest number treated in one day was 44. These ailments includ- ed almost everything from a horsebite to a toothache. Moreover, several teachers and cafe- teria cooks have taken advantage ofthe services offered by the intirmary. A series of convocations were scheduled forthe year l956-57 to develop and broaden the students' interests. The convocation committee, who was ap- pointed by Mr. Penrod, brought to the pupils several timely and entertaining programs. Robert Mitchum and his Wabash College Glee Club appeared early in the fall. Rev. Arthur McDavitt presented a convo in February commemorating Abraham Lincoln. Roy- ertonites, themselves, participated in a panel discus- sion, How Do Other Countries Feel Toward the United States. History ll and lll students represented such nations as Egypt, England, and Germany. Members of the Convo Committee were Mr. Phillips, Mrs. Showalter, Mr. Miller, Mrs. Quick, Miss Richardson, and Mrs. Morris. 9 JANET RAY HARVEST FESTIVAL QUEEN Fun cmd frolic, good times, and renewed acquaintances highlighted the fifth annual homecoming of R.H.S. The festive occasion began with a bonfire, pep rally, and a brilliant display of fireworks. The main attraction of the evening was the pigskin tilt involving the undefeated Redbirds and the Fairmount Quakers. The Redbirds' victory chain remained unbroken, as they handed the Quakers a 33 to O defeat. Both the iunior and senior high school bands united in presenting the halftime show, entitled Harvest Day. The crowning of the queen, Janet Ray, and the presentation of her court, Jean Wil- liams, Joanna Graves, and Dian Green followed the colorful halftime program. The queen and her court reigned throughout the Harvest Festival dance. JOURNALISM Glue on hands and clothes-strenuous picture schedules-deadline dilemma-all this and more was involved in planning and producing the Panorama. Only the person who has witnessed the year as a iournalism class member knows the fun and work involved. Now we can breathe a sigh of relief and mutter a word of praise to those who really deserve it. There were times when the work was piled so high it seemed impossible to complete. But our thanks goes to Mr. Phillips for devoting his time and eFforts in helping produce this annual. Headaches and problems by the giant economy size go into the making of a school annual. S P 0 R R T S FCDOTBALL- SPCDRT SEASON'S CPENER The fall of 1956 saw the Redbirds capture their fourth straight M.V.C. championship title and in addition, com- plete their second consecutive undefeated season. Royerton grid men were under the excellent guidance of coach Bob Baker and his new assistant, Wally Gartee. Grim determination along with an unyielding desire to win enabled the Redbirds to reach the highest peak of the school's football history. Playing a tough eight game schedule, the Redbirds scored a total of 208 points for an average of 26 points per game. Defensively they yielded only 44 points to their opponents for an average of 5.5 per game. Royer- ton scored 25 of 31 TD's by rushing, four by passing, and two by pass interceptions. Eight members of this year's football squad were selected to the Mississinewa Valley all conference teams. Those selected for first team were Tom Bruin, halfback, Don Stamper, end, Charley Hillman, fullback, Bruce Crockett, tackle and Ogal Claspell, guard. Second team members included Norm Locke, quarterback, Mac Teboe, halfback and Mike Kerper, end. Once again congratulations are in order to Bob Baker and his i956 varsity football squad for completing their second consecutive undefeated season and capturing their fourth M.V.C. championship title. REDBIRDS SEE ACTION ON THE HARDWGOD The 1956-57 varsity basketball team had a difficult time converting from the gridiron to the basketball court. This factor, along with the team's inability to hit their free throws, accounted forthe Redbird's slow start. However, with the coming of the county tourney, coaches, Gordon Stauffer and Myron Dickerson, prepped their boys to the peak of their season's play. After defeating Center, Harrison, and Cowan, the Red- birds advanced to the final game in the tourney, losing to Gaston by a close score of 60 to 53. The Redbirds scored a total of 1388 points this season for an average of 57.83 points per game. Oddly 24 enough, their opponents amassed the same number of points. Much of the team's success came from a well balanced scoring attack. The Redbirds who scored over 200 points were Bruin with 283, Locke with 261, and Combs with 230. Also pushing the 200 point bracket was Wright with 193. After reaching their stride, the Redbirds continued to play a winning brand of basketball. Although their sea- son record was only fair, the Redbirds displayed the true marks of sportsmanship and put forth their best efforts in each and every game. One hundred and sixty-tive strong, the girls' pep club played an important part in urging our Redbirds to victory this season. The club yelled at all home games and went to the Mississinewa and York- town ball games. Tourney time found the cheering block the center of attention. Clever skits and tunes were composed to popular TV slogans and songs, in- cluding HG r e e n D o o r, l Dreamed, Cindy, Oh Cindy, and The Money Tree. However, our boys needed the full support of the coaches, student managers, faculty members, and student body. STUDENT COUNCIL Student representation in school government was a new feature at Royerton this year. ln order for the students to have voice in school affairs and to practice democ- racy at Royerton, the council was formed, The council was promoted by Mr. Penrod, principal, and an interested student group. The present council consisted of thirty-two members, Each home room with an enrollment of fifteen or more students was allowed two representatives, while those with fourteen or fewer students had one representative. The group was in charge of the Thanksgiving convocation, showed parents through school during National Education Week, assigned money making proiects to clubs whose finances were low, and was the head of various projects. 35 H I G H S C H O O L B A N D First Row: David Miller, Pat Fenwick, Sharon Owens, Marsha Third Row Jacquelyn Fager Janelle Freeman Linda Lotz Harrison, Pat Tobias, Linda Philebaum. The Royerton High School Band, under the direction of Richard Jolliffe, is ninety members strong. At the beginning ofthe year, the band put in hours of hard work practicing various formations to be used during half time at the foot- ball and basketball games. Early in the year the band took part in the State March- ing Contest held at Southport and marched oft with an excellent rating. With the close of the sports season, more emphasis was placed on concert music as the band busily prepared for their appearance in the school musical, April Showers. The band has done an outstanding iob during the past year, and both school and community are proud of their musicianship. Maiorette, Rita Kemmer 36 'Q X hx:-AI' 1 X ' NN x . .,--- .:. . Penrod, Principal r S T634 G f f' f' f 4:8 A new principal, seven teachers, and eight department heads were introduced at Royerton this year. Mr. Loyd Penrod, who became Royerton's principal, brought about many changes. Mr. Pen- rod's sympathetic manner and under- standing guidance has endeared him to every student. Mr. Penrod is not exactly a new comer to our school, since he is a former graduate and teacher of Royerton. A newly created position, that of Junior High principal, was filled by Mr. Marcus Newton. Mrs. Mildred Marcus was ap- pointed Dean of Girls, and John Stebbins, in addition to being assistant principal, was named Dean of Boys. Mr. Harold Hutchison acts as athletic director, and the new guidance department is headed by Fred Glancy.
