Seventeen AND NOW We are about to graduate. We have almost completed the final act of our high school performance. We hope it has been a drama that everyone will remember and one that we may look back upon with pride. For some this is the endg but for many it is only the beginning. Our production has run for twelve years. We have tried to make each performance better than the last. 'TO start the last year of our production, we had election of officers and selected our class colors, blue and goldg our flower, yellow roseg and our motto, Decision Determines Destiny. Christmas came and we began to realize that our run was soon to end. Then came the Class Play, the Prom, Baccalaureate, and the event many eagerly awaited while others looked upon it with dread at the thought of leaving - Commencement. This was the final act of our production. This ended twelve of the most treasured years of our lives. The junior of 1950 was easily recognized by the sharp looking class jewelry which we had the privilege of wearing. In the department of class officers the class of 'Sl excelled in electing Harold Buchanan, presidentg Jack Clevenger, vice-presidntg Marilyn McCreery, secretaryg and Vernon Nelson, treasurer. Our centered attractions for this year were the Junior Carnival and umor Play Although we spent many long hours in preparation for these activities we shall never forget the good times we shared while doing so As a class we know that these activities would have never taken place had it not been for our sponsors Mr Bixler and Mrs Marcus First row jacquelyn DeBord Evelyn Harper Second rou Wayne aneway Beth Ann Brown Fielden Dalton Myrtle Harty Carroll Smith Mary Mifflin Nelson Modglnn Judy Miller Third row Magdalene johnson Robert Chisman, Mary Rousey Charles Welder Shirley Bunner Thomas Weakley Rhea jean Smith joe Upchurch Fourth row William Parton Martha Deaton jack Clevenger joyce Reagan Ruth Beaty Alan Crooks joan Brothers Virgil Paul F1 tb row Malcolm Brown Norma Huffer jimmy Burcaw Patricia Smith Donald Armstrong Glenna Sue Thompson Bernard ODell Oliverte Peyton Sixth raw Ethel Hoskins Wayne Landis Peggy McKillip Rodney Miller Wiladean Claspell Vernon Nelson Rhoda Collins Donnie Smith 'iv dl .,,, e -Jlsiqs 1 Y-as is 'SHAPE' B '7 Q K f-4 1 x 5 Twenty mne . . , i , . i . . 1 'I i , , . , , -I : 1 . , . .y . . . From Freshie to Sophomore in one simple lesson. Only one more year and we'll be upperclassmen. We entered our second year of high school with a feeling of anticipation for our remaining years here at R. H. S. Even though we weren t Freshies, we needed help from time to time in selecting our sub jects and carrying out our class activities so we made good use of our sponsors Mr Newton and Mrs Cline Although we have been in high school only two years we feel that we have rolled up a record that any class should be proud of and we shall be ready to assume the roles of the leading characters when 1952 comes Furs! row Dorothy Atchley Dick Riggin Second row John Modglin anet Stephenson Lynn Turner Lou Ann Cassell Arvin Brokaw Ethel Rose Billy Barnett Nancy oyce Thin! row Judith Taylor Joe Dalton Janice Locke Billy enkins Delilah Batt Donald Muller Virginia Brown David Battas Fourth row Paul Kem Glenda Miller Gary Mansfield Mary Largent Charles Davis Janice McKillip James Harper Betty Musgrave F1 lb row Nancy Underhill Kenneth Wasson Nancy Shaffer Arthur Maze Evelyn Groscost Stephen Cook Patricia Collings Duane Clements Sixth row Betty Thompson Gordon Hunt 'Mary McFadden William Maddy Sue Brand Gilbert Gur' kel Ruth Walker Gene Hall V E Meaffli 1 H gli 3 J ,jk nf' I vo Q 1 455 'Raw' fi! .fi ,4 Tbxrty one , . . . . . Like most freshmen, we felt very unimportant and unsure of ourselves at the beginning of the year. But our class work and outside activities have helped us gain more confidence as the time passes. We have found life at Royerton not all serious. In contrast to puzzling algebra prob- lems, confusing verb conjugations, and impossible Latin translations, we have enjoyed the G. A. A. initiation,'class parties, and organization meetings. Yes, this has been a great year for the class of 53, even if we were lowly freshmen for we know we ll be the Stars of the Show tomorrow, taking our place in school leadership Flrxt mu William Lawson Charlotte Rousth Donald Rees anet Conatser Beryle Ritcheson Sctoml rou Charles Richards janet McCord Loretta ackson ack Dungan Nancy ohnson Carl Winger Carolyn Watters Harold Smith Third rou Charles Robertson Virginia Herbert Donald Alexander Patty Smith Donald Nelson Joyce Davis Byron Humbarger Sharon Shaffer Fourlb rou. H. S, Finishing his first year band director, can look which everyone is justly The band participated the school year, In the at Royerton, Mr. Copeland, back on an organization of proud. in many activities during fall, they performed numer- ous marching exhibitions at football games. The band played for home basketball games, the indoor circus, and at the Trustees, Convention in lndi- anapolis. Another event which the band had worked for all season was the District Band Contest. Adding much color and variety to the band's ap- pearance were the twirlers, Carolyn Iivfe, Marilyn Rowland, Marilyn Chisman, Joy Miller, Sarah Morgan, Gloria Eller, Sharon Lindemann, Kay Hurst, Kenneth W'asson, and jack Roberts. NVith their floor show exhibitions, they added much pep to the basketball games. On February 4, sixteen students made an excellent showing at the District Solo and Ensemble Contest which was held at Ball State College. Soloists winning first ratings were Beverly Stephens, flute, and Rolland Stephens, clarinet. A saxophone quartet composed of Marilyn Kirkham, kludy Houk, Mary jo Madill, and Robert Rhea received a first rating. Other ensembles receiving first ratings were the clarinet quartet composed of George Holt, Jan Madill, Paul Kem, and Ronald Benner and a wood- wind trio made up of Janet Riggin, Beverly Stephens, and ,lan Madill. Placing first in the twirling contest was Carolyn Fyfe. The band will lose twelve fine musicians through graduation this year, but there is no doubt the band will be better than ever come next fall.
