First there is the period of practice to master basic steps just as first there is the period of study to master elementary subjects. Then the novice joins a Set and the student progresses into high school. Both move cautiously as they hegin to put theory into practice, hut soon they gain confidence and enter into the gay spirit ol' the group. Finally, dancers leave the Floor as seniors leave 111 1CS filled with pleasant memories they will long cherish. Since these similarities hetwcen the two American institu- tions, the Square Dance and the puhlic school, do exist, Press Cluh has selected the dance as the theme of this annual. The staff sincerely hopes that the reader will cnioy all the Fun and gaiety of an old-liashioned polka as he turns each page of the 1953 SCOPE. ' 4 The corners all DEDICATION It gives the Staff great pleasure to dedicate this 1953 edition of Scope to you, Miss Mack. The length of time that you have served in our school system is in itself a testimonial to your superior teaching. The capable instruc- tion and wise guidance you have given countless students well deserve this small token of our appreciation but there is another side of the picture as well. The young people who have passed through your classes have learned much more than mathematics, for you have taught all of us a way of life. Your ability to accept whatever confronts you with never a word of complaint or hint of discouragement has been a fine example for us to follow. Your quick wit, your keen sense of humor, and your sly chuckle have Won a very special place for you in our hearts. You are indeed a real lVlerrimac - a part of RI-ICS which none of us will ever forget. And so, Miss Mack - we happily dedicate our Square Dance edition of Scope to youl 5 'E ONWARD, ROYALTON HARTLAND MINNIE IVE3 MU5lC1JOHN LLEWELLYN DAVID Q?wfCEffj?fR if3 ff? LOUD 6 Right and left PRI NCIPALS IDA M. HOFERT, Principal ot Gosport Building: CHARLES H. PORTER, Assistant to the Principalj EVA M. SHOCKLEY, Elementary Supervisory F. EDWARD THOMSON, Supervising Principal FACULTY As the dance begins, Callers step to the front to direct the Sets. Similarly, teachers in RHCS step to the front to direct students by giving personal attention and guidance to every pupil from Kindergarten through Twelfth Grade. To discuss problems concerning the entire school system, the faculty members formed a teachers' organization. The 1952-1953 officers were Helen lXlcKinney, presidentg Virginia Watt, vice-president, Catherine Campbell, secretaryg and Patricia Dodge, treasurer. Members of the group attended conferences to discuss improve- ments for our school. The first of these, the Zone Conference, was held in Buffalo in October. The year couldn't he all work, however, so the organization planned several social events for recreation. First, there was a Smorgasbord and then the annual Christmas party. To bring to an end another successful year, the faculty attended the Spring Banquet. The teachers also supported wholeheartedly the Red Cross and CARE Drives and the March of Dimes. When the music fades and the dancers leave the floor, they naturally recall the activities of the Caller. In the same manner, RHCS students recall the interest their teachers have taken in themg and just as the dancers applaud the Caller's leader- ship, so the students show appreciation for the assistance, guidance, and counsel given them by the members of the faculty. -Janice Caleb and Lois Dorwald X '. 2. Fortunately for the student body, this spirit carried over into all the Bands appearances, from square dances to concerts, throughout the year. There were three instrumental organizations in school in '52-'53: Senior Band. lVliddleport junior Band, and Gasport Junior Band. The senior group played for assemblies and plays and joined the vocal department to present concerts in December and May. In November, members of this unit attended the Western New York Sectional Conference at Newfane where they participated in band programs directed by well-known conductors. Members of the Junior Bands realized that only through diligent practice can they ever satisfy their desire to join the older unit. These younger pupils, therefore, spent many hours rehearsing and their perfonnance at the Spring Concert showed that this hard work was not in vain. There was also a music class composed of boys and girls interested in the formation of an orchestra. These pupils met for weekly rehearsals under the direction of Mr. Hammond. just as dancers hate to see a good Hoedown come to a close, so do music students dread the end of the school year. Bowing to the inevitable, however, Band members. with their usual fine spirit, strike up the familiar strains of Good Night, Ladies and everyone merrily rolls along home from another RHCS Square Dance. -Carolyn Williams and Ioyce Flemming To the music room go JUNIOR BAND Front Row: H. It is much the same in RHCS when one of the vocal music organizations Files onto the stage, for then the talking ceases while the audience enjoys every number on the program. This year, the vocal groups were four in number. Mixed Chorus, which boasted ol' fifty members, was the largest. In addition, there were Ninth Crade and Tenth Grade Choruses and Girls' Ensemble which was formed only last September. Mem- bers ol' these groups, under the direction of Miss Betsy Binns, presented a wide variety of programs during the year. To inaugurate the '52-'53 activities, Miss Binns selected representatives from Mixed Chorus to attend the Music Festival at Newfane Central School in the fall. In December, the Choruses joined the Band to present the annual Christmas Concert. For the Spring Concert, the groups sang musical comedy selections to carry out the Songs from Broadway Musicals theme. The newly-formed Girls' Ensemble had an jfactive year performing for school assemblies and for local clubs. In May. the Ensemble also competed in the New York State Sectional Music Association Eestival. True it is that the vocalists numbers add much to the spirit of fun and frolic at the Square Dance, and it is equally true that the programs presented by the vocal music department add much to the spirit of life in RHCS. -Kathleen Bear and Josephine Manuele Now promenade all 69 GIRLS' GLEE CLUB Front Row: K. This year's squad, although an inexper- ienced group with hut two veterans, made up in spirit and enthusiasm what was lacking in experience and under David hlarclvs ahle coaching they showed great promise l'or future years. They gave evi- dence of their ability hy taking the long end ol' a 52-48 score from North Tona' wanda. an AA school which finished second in the Niagara Frontier play-offs. After the Music stops, weary dancers leave the floor until the next dance which they will enter with renewed zest. WHkon lDocbdo your padnerin FOOTBALL Crab your partner and duck for the oystern, shouts the Caller as the fiddler sends his bow flying over the strings. With a cheer, the dancers then dash out on the floor just as members of the football squad rush out on the field. The '52-'53 football team enjoyed the most triumphant season in its history ehalliing up six wins against only one loss. Much of the success the fellows had in their steady march over first one opponent and then another lay in the fine spirit of coeoperation and indomitable will to win which Coach Paeini had instilled in his players. Cofcaptains Louis Reale and lerry Morrison turned in excellent records. but every member of the team also gave a good account of himself throughout the season. VVhen the fiddler ends the reel, the dancers show their approval of his per! formance with noisy yells. The cry lt's a homer! was heard num- erous times as the group scored point after point to place RIICS in the lead. Under the direction of Coach Coates. the team captured top place in the league for the first time since 1936. At the final game in North Tonawandais Veterans' Me- morial Park Auditorium, players and spec- tators alilte displayed their good sportsman- ship when RllCS was defeated. In addi- tion to excellent teamwork, this same sportsmanship was a vital factor of these exciting games. More of the student body than ever before backed the team from the first game to the final contest.
