Changes In Faculty Help Teachers And Students Over the past two years there have been many changes in the Royall Faculty. This year has been no exception. Principal Gary Rooney, who was new last year, was replaced by Marvin Runyon. Gloria Guichard took over the Health Careers class from Becky Goodman, school nurse. Kathy Sta- pleton replaced Sandy Schulenburg and Roger Kalodrich for Journal- ism, English 12, and Reading classes. Maynard Miller is the newest member in the Business de- partment. There were some minor changes in class locations. The Publications room which was next to the office, was moved upstairs. The computer lab is now next to the office. Mr. Sulik and Mr. Board exchanged rooms, which put Accounting class on the academic wing, and Mr. Su- lik's class next to the typing room. Back: I. Meckstroth, R. Kiel, P. Dutton, A. Houzner, P. Q People Behind The Scenes Typewriters pounded, questions thrown from corner to corner, and project after project in progress. Publications class keeps busy. This was a year of change for Publications. Work space was relocated upstairs into room 22, sharing space with English classes which led to cramping. Personnel changes had a major impact as a new advi- sor, and mostly inexperienced staff members learned the ropes of fundraising and production. Above: Barb Brown, Lisa Henze, Angie Brown. Around The World The main objective of the AFS club this year was to encourage Royall students to go abroad and host exchange students at Royall. Their second objective was to encourage Royall stu- dents to expand their horizons through travel and new exper- iences. They began to accom- plish these goals with a trip to the Twin Cities in the fall, where they toured a renovated mansion area and the University of Min- nesota, and saw a play. After the experience of big city life, the club made plans for spring ca- noe trips in order to explore the great out-of doors. Left to right: Front row: R. Ambort, D Green, K. Ahlstrom, L. In the fall they at- tended a workshop at Richland Center where they learned activi- ties such as organization of the school's government and ways of improving the school. They put on the annual fall Homecoming activities and dance with the Senior class. A mix up with the D.J. at Homecoming enti- tled the Student Council and Senior class to free DJ. services which they put to use in January on the Turnabout dance. They also, for the first time, sold carnations for Valentines Day. It was a success, and they will prob- ably do it again next year. Student Government Left to Right Row 1 K Riley Vice Presi I I G I I I e dent, C. Hitchock, Presidentg T: Bruha, Sec- Pride Future Homemakers of America this year met and discussed the dif- ferent careers that the members were interested in, in the Home Economics related fields. This year they sold candy, for a fundraiser. The money earned went toward sending four representa- tives of the club to the District Conference Convention in Green Bay. At one convention Kim Rains took fouth place by reciting the FHA creed. In order to join this group mem- bers paid a 55.00 due. They said it was well worth the cost to be in this group, celebrating its 40th anniver- sary this year. Officers were: Presi- dent, Denise Wilde, V. The club had thirty- five members. Most of which were boys. Some members involved themselves in a car painting fun- draiser at Mark Rudig's in Mauston. The club raised fifty dollars for new targets, one of which was donated to them by a sporting good store. Archery met only twice as of March due to unavailability of facilities. Well Spoken Forensics unfortunately had very little student participation in 1986 probably because it involves memori- zation and speaking ability-just plain hard work. Participants choose their own per- formance subjects whether it be poet- ry, solo play acting or prose reading. To prepare for the season, the team attended a forensics conference at UW-LaCrosse. Advisors Kueppers and McHenry said The convention was a great help , students learned performance techniques. Square Roots Advisors Hawes and Calkins' math team had a total of 14 members this year, with at least two representatives from each class. The team competed successfully at several events, and LaVonne Todd- made All Academic team. 28 Left to right, bottom to right: Row one: S. Lee, Runyon, L. Thompson, M. Lenski, M. Birch. B. Vieth, D. Have you ever wondered who those people handing out programs at school functions are? They're the 1985-86 usherettes. The eleven girl club led by Mr. Miller had many jobs this year, such as handing pro- grams at basketball games, helping parents find teachers at parent- teacher conferences, and helping with senior graduation. At the end of the year they schedule a well-deserved shopping spree in LaCrosse. They earn mon- ey for this from having bake sales. The Usherettes help to welcome people to the school, and get satis- faction from providing their valu- able service. The 1986 Mock Trail team of Amy Preuss, Carole Milne, Amber Houzner, Kathy Bradley, Jeanne Beres, Kim Schachtely, Scott Vieth, and Julia Wolfgram had its day in court. Mock Trial teams compete against other schools doing pre- liminary state case hearings. Cir- cuit county judges or lawyers judge each team according to their ability to prosecute and defend the case which they are presenting. The Royall Mock Trial team has two coaches, Mr. McHenry and El- roy attorney William Jefferson. The coaches help the team prepare the material needed to win each case. The Royall Mock Trial team par- ticipated in local competition against Almond High School at Wisconsin Rapids. They succeeded in overpowering them which ad- vanced Royall to Appleton to com- pete in the Sub-Regionals against Berland, Green Bay, and Neenha High Schools. They were defeated there, and disqualified from further competition. Royall High School can be proud of the 1986 Mock Tri- al team for giving their all. The members put on a pancake breakfast, partici- pated in basketball games with other schools, put up a bulletin board, and offered special bargains on FFA shakes. The annual award banquet was April Sth. Students were awarded for excellent speeches and hard work they performed throughout the year. Choir Notes The freshman and acappella choirs sponsored a dance marathon to raise funds for the season's needs. A synthesizer was pur- chased first with proceeds from the marathon. Crystal jewelry was sold to cover the expenses of a class trip. In the fall, the choirs held a hay ride to attract new members, and the attendence was high. Performances this year by the two groups began in the fall with the fall concert. There was an excel- lent crowd. In the mid-winter they gave a concert which was attended well in spite of difficult weather conditions. In the spring the choirs participated in a festival: district contests held at Weston. The marching band began the season by playing in foot- ball halftime shows and marching in many area parades. The marching band ended the marching season with the ,annual high school Homecoming parade and halftime festivities. Soon after the marching season was over the concert band was practicing in full force for their fall and winter concerts. The year's highlight for the music department was Festival at Weston High School on March 8, 1986. The concert band received a first rat- ing in Class A competition. Many concert students are also involved in pep band. Being a pep band member means being at all pep assemblies, and home basketball games. Near the end of the year the band seems to take a slower pace, having only Pops Concert and graduation to perform for. This year's Pops Concert will feature the sounds from the big band era of the 1940's and 195O's. Banner: N. Lannes, C. Voss. Color Guard: J. Bradley, D. Hill. Flag Corp: G. Finch, A. Steinke, J. W Despite Man Injuries Team Still Does Well The 1985 freshman football team did not have a successful season ac- cording to the statistics. The twenty- two players under the coaching of Joe Vitcenda concluded their season with a record of 0-6. However, despite the disappointing record many indivi- duals gained valuable playing exper- ience which will be very useful in the years ahead. Considering some of the complica- tions the junior varsity team faced, their efforts were still productive. A decrease in the number of players and the lack of opportunity to practice had a great impact on the outcome of the team's season. Working under Coach Jack Sulik the junior varsity team pulled out a 4-3 record for the year. Some of the season's worst weather conditions made Panther football dif- ficult for both the spectators and play- ers to enjoy. Even though the weather didn't cooperate, the effects of a four game winning streak kept the mo- mentum of the Panthers going strong. The varsity season was filled with ups and downs. A 52-6 victory over Ban- gor on Parents' Night was one of the highlights, while a loss to Cashton on Homecoming was the largest letdown of the season. The team, under the instruction of Head Coach Jack Sulik along with Assistant Coaches Dan Delong and Tom Hodson, finished the year with a 5-4 record. Bottom left: Fumble recovery. Royall Girls Give Their Best Hey, good serve! Great spiking! Terrific bumping! These are just a few of the many expressions you may have heard from the crowds at this year's I.V. and varsity volleyball games. As usual, both the J.V. and varsity vol- leyball teams started practice in August. The J.V. volleyball team consisted of eleven returning and four new team members under the coaching of Mr. Larry Daines. They earned twelve wins and one loss. The hard work of the I.V. team led them to a first place victory over four other schools at the Cashton Invita- tional in October. Home crowds came alive when the varsity volleyball team walked out of the locker rooms and onto the court. This year's varsity volleyball team consisted of thirteen players, including the six re- turning lettermen. The varsity girls' re- cord was one win and twelve losses un- der the coaching of newcomer Mr. Ned Voss. Team members Kathy Bradley and Tammy Cook said, Even though we didn't walk off the floor with many wins we always kept a positive outlook on the games ahead. Below: Volleyball girls warming up. He said that as a team they did not score very well due to youth and inexperience, but that individual runners brought home strong, promising scores. The team had a total of fourteen members this season: nine girls and five boys. Cross country members participated in many invita- tionals around the region. Some of them were: Black River Falls, Brookwood, Richland Center, and Westby. Royall also hosted its own invitational in October. Coach Calkins took the girls team to Sectionals this year. The girls did not place, but reported it was still a good experience. Honored this year at the Fall Sports Award banquet for most valuable girls runner was Amy Krahenbuhl. The freshmen struggled through a long season and finished with a record of 2-13. Their lack of size made scoring and rebounding a difficult battle. According to Mrs. Strelow, the team's level of skill doubled by the end of the season. Individuals on the team brought home three of the four first place medals at Conference. Go - Fight - Win!!! This year's football, wrestling, varsity and junior varsity basket- ball cheerleading squads worked especially hard, not just cheering on the home team, but also work- ing toward improving their perfor- mances and :participating in fund raising activities. Fund raising included the selling of raffle tickets for season activity passes, and having bake sales. The profits were used to purchase new uniforms for football and basket- ball cheerleading squads. The girls attended cheerleading camp at Oshkosh, Wisconsin, where they learned many cheers and a new routine which they per- formed at basketball ancl wrestling meets. The varsity's toughest competi- tor was the Wonewoc Indians. The junior varsity's toughest competi- tor was the Tomah Indians. The varsity ended their season fifth in the conference with 2 wins and 6 losses. The junior varsity ended their season with 3 wins and 6 losses. The weather did not contribute to this season's success. Two games were delayed early in the season due to rain. Also because of rain, some games had to be rescheduled' as double headers. The wind was often so strong that it would pick up dirt from the infield, causing problems with visibility. The chilly temperatures were very uncomfort- able for spectators as well as the players. 'The girls varsity softball team was under new coaching. Roger Kalodrich was replaced by Daniel Dedering, who was the junior var- sity coach. Boys Track Runs Hard The Royall boys track team was jump- ing this year, with several strong achievements in field events. High jumper Wayne Wilson cleared six feet. Tom Gosselin pole vaulted ten feet. And Pat Smith reigned as confer- ence champ of the long jump. Despite such highlights the seventeen member team, headed by coaches Flasher and Calkins, finished seventh out of sev- en in conference, a bleak comparison to the Royall undefeated status of 2 years ago. Such a change may be attributed to the team's inexperience, with only 4 return- ing members this year. The team lacked experience and depth, according to coach Flasher. However, attitudes were good, and the team put forth a unified effort. Awards were presented to: Ben Thompson, Captain, Pat Smith, M.V.P. Field, and Dale Carey, M.V.P. Track. The weather did not help: first practices were run in the cold, followed by unseasonable heat. But the team stuck it out, and their hard work paid off. It was a banner season for Royall as school records in the following events were broken: Amy Krahenbuhl: 300 me- ter low hurdles, and 400 meter run, Beth Clayton: Mile run. The mile relay team of Michelle Kranz, Kris Thompson, Missy Haney, and Amy Krahenbuhl broke their event's school record twice. Krahenbuhl and the relay team advanced to Sectionals. 'l 67 Home Run The Royall Panther baseball team had a rough season against tough competi- tion this year, ending up with a record of 9 and 8. There were few ups in the season with the pitchers giving up too many walks, and hitting being inconsistent. The highlight of the season was Pitcher Bruce Vieth throwing a no hitter, the 3rd one in the history of Royall High School. The I.V. team showed a lot of potential for being an even better team next year, with a final record of 9 and 3. -W- Above: Statisticians hard at work. Top Left: Coach Vitcenda watching for the play. Band members didn't keep late hours ev- ery night during their three day visit to the Big Apple, but it seemed as if they still saw half a million things. The band's first stop was a concert at an ele- mentary school near Middletown, NY, where they were well received accord- ing to band director Mr. Ebbers. Once in New York City, they visited the United Nations Building, Statue of Liberty, Em- pire State Building, and the famous Macy's Department Store. Most of the group agreed that riding the subway was a unique experience. Evening entertain- ment included seeing the Broadway shows Cats and Big River , and a bal- let at the Met in Lincoln Center. The ac- tivities kicked off with spirit week. Dress up days included western, school color, sweats, dress up, and nerd day. Student Council led the daily activity period class competi- tions such as licorice eating, life saver race, tug-of-war, and the egg toss. One could feel the intense excite- ment Thursday night as class and club skits were presented and game finals were played. Jello slurping was first. As each participant slurped, the gym echoed with screaming. Finally, junior Mark Gruen won. The tug-of-war finals found the sophomore and seniors facing off. Students gasped as the rope pulled one way, then the other until at last the sophomores won. The final event of the program was the crowning of King Todd Schmidt and Queen Jeanne Balder, who then led the student body down to the practice field for the burning of the Friday was highlighted by students scurrying to put finishing touches on class floats, and seniors decorating the gym. During lunch hour Scott Lee and Bruce Vieth's powder puff teams competed. In the end Vieth's team was victorious. Warm sun and blue sky were the setting for the Homecoming parade as it passed through the crowded streets of Elroy. That night at the game the Panthers had a disap- pointing loss to the Cashton Ea- gles. A western decor was the setting as students danced Saturday night. The disc jockey was an hour and a half late and seniors Wayne Wilson and Rich Murphy filled in on band stereo equipment until the DJ. ar- rived. The Grand March began at 10:30 to the theme song, Never Surrender . Student Council presi- dent Carrie Hitchcock announced the junior class as the spirit trophy winner. The first snowfall was in the beginning of No- vember and the area received over five feet of snow during the season, remaining snow-cov- ered until mid-March. Due to the ice and snow school was cancelled for four days. Although the winter's weather kept many peo- ple indoors, the E-K-W community really heated up beginning the week of January 20th. The high school's activities started with dress up days in preparation for a dance on Saturday. Saturday night the Senior class and Student Council sponsored a Turnabout dance at the high schoolp the music was proveded free by Disc Jockey Gogi-Wheels due to an error at Home- coming. The following Friday before an away basketball game the APS sponsored a spaghetti supper at Royall. The money earned at the sup- per was to go toward an upcoming club trip. Saturday morning brought a pancake breakfast sponsored by the band. After eating their fill, 2.00 participants of the area's Suldahl Classic ski race waxed up their skis and set out cross country to Mauston. Sunday afternoon the Booster Club hosted an alumni basketball game, followed by a game played between the E-K-W firemen and teachers. The week's activities lured local people out of hybernation, resulting in a good turnout to these events and a break in the winter. 3rd from top left: Students on the move at the winter dance. Senior preparation for gradu- ation began with the Senior Girls Tea on April 21, 1986 at the Grace Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall. The tea was prepared for the senior girls by the Elroy Women's Club. A month later on May 20, 1986 the Senior Banquet was held. The menu for the evening was salad, ham, baked potato, and cherry des- sert, all prepared by John Weger and catered by the Royall High School Band. Entertainment for the evening was provided by the sen- iors with a skit about the senior class at their ten year reunion. After the skit the awards and schol- arships were handed out. Once the evening was over the seniors had to hurry home and get to bed so they could be ready for the long ride down to Gurnee, Illi- nois for the class trip to Great America. The buses left bright and early on May 21, 1986 for this excit- ing trip. The seniors returned home at midnight after a fun-filled day at the amusement park. Graduation, the day which the seniors worked toward for four years, was on Friday, May 30, 1986. The day was sunny and warm, per- fect weather for Royall's first ever outside graduation. On Friday evening at 8:00 p.m. ninety-two seniors, the class of 1986, were pre- sented to the audience as helium balloons were released, and a stu- dent wave swept across the graduates. The class colors were blue, white and silver. Class flower was a rose, the class song was Let's Cele- brate, and the class motto was Yesterday is a dream, and tomor- row is only a vision: but today well- lived, makes every yesterday a dream of happiness and every to- morrow a vision of hope. The sen- ior class is wished hope and happi- ness always. They will be missed. Above left: Carole Milne addresses the class while Doug Senior Banquet award winners: Front ley. Elroy Students Honored For Scholastic Achievement This page is dedicated to those students of Royall High School who have obtained at least a three point grade point average for the 1985-86 school year. The Scholastic Banquet was held on April 22.. It is the only time students get recogni- tion for their academic achieve- Seniors g ments. The three point grade point average was obtained through hard work and dedication on the stu- dent's part. Since a lot of effort was put forth, these students deserve the little recognition that this page gives them. g Juniors Gary Albrecht Renee Ambort David Arndt Gina Arndt David Autin Jeanne Balder Daniel Bauer Jeanne Beres Jennifer Bradley Kathleen Bradley Steven Brieske Laura Cleveln Tammy Cook Carla Downing Melissa Ebbers Cathy Eberhardt Deanna Fowler James Gauden Douglas Cteier Thomas Gosselin Amber Houzner Karoline Kledehn Caroline Milne Jens Neergaard- Petersen A Annette Peterson Diana Polstinif A Amy Preuss Kathleen Riley Kim Schachtely Laura Schendel Todd Schmidt Sue Schnurr Thomas Sebranek Jessica Thomas A Andy Tracy Rosann Warner Stephanie Wick Tamra Wilson Angela Winchell C Kenneth ,Witt Sophomores, L Terri Arndt Lisa Brown Mary Brown Michelle Cook Elizabeth Ebbers Jerry Eckelberg Pamela Ellsworth Norman Farnam Dale Green Julie Hitchcock Eric Kortbein Angela Lydon Naomi Maule Lynette Miller- Julie Olson if A Shannon Ol1ROUfk8, 'if 1 Angela Preusst v Wendy Preuss John Riley Alan Schachtely M Trisha Schreier Susan Splittgerber Kelli Thompson Lavonne Todd Andrew Vieth Michelle 'Wildes Cindy Wilson Scott Wright Kirk Ahlstrom Catherine Bunk Joseph Carpenter Jane Finucan Mark Gruen Michelle Haney Jacqueline Harazmus Carol Houzner Kristi Jordan Amy Krahenbuhl Michelle Kranz Dianne Murphy Michael Parks Frederick Pasch Lisa Pollock Troy Reineke Shante Roberts Janine Schachtely Amy Steinke Kristin Thompson Louis Thompson Audrey Triebs Tina Triebs Angela Wolf Julia Wolfgram Freshmen Andrew Michael Hill Albrecht Dawn Hill Steve Board Ann Bradley Stephanie Calkins Scott Cox Paula Crary Kathleen Downing Dean Geier Shelia Greenheck James Hendrickson Darrick Nelson Cari Novachek John Ott Dan Pearsall Toni Reineke Dee Shepherd Lance Skaro Cheryl Speicher Beth Steinke Tommi Thompson Matthew Warner Royall's Response Best Cafeteria Food Pizza Tacos Spaghetti Salad Bar Worst Cafeteria Food Macaroni and Cheese Salmon Loaf Casseroles Favorite Place To Eat McDonald's Hardees Pizza Hut Home Favorite Food Pizza Spaghetti Tacos Chicken Favorite Pop Pepsi Mountain Dew Diet Pepsi Coke Favorite Class Study Hall Physical Education Biology Choir There have always been many fads and popular trends to occupy students' time.
