1984 Royall High Panther School Volume 25 Elroy, Wis. —- - To assist you P through our history The school year 1983-1984 is a milestone for Royall High School. In this the twenty-fifth edition of the PANTHER, we have attempted to incorporate the past with the present and offer to you a history book as well as a yearbook. The challenge of this undertaking has been enormous but has been a valuable experience as we have discovered the sacrifices as well as the sincere dedication so many people have undertaken to make RHS the fine school it is today. Many innovations have evolved in this twenty-five year span. In the academic areas as well as vocational education we have continued to move with the times and offer unequaled choices of courses for our students to select from in an effort to prepare them for post high school education and careers. Athletically our opportunities are endless as we offer to both boys and girls occasions to participate in sports during the Fall, Winter and Spring. Girls' sports, although relatively new, has swelled to where we now offer seven varsity sports for girls as well as boys. Royall teams have a history of performing very well and finishing near the top. I ine Arts is another area in which a number of RHS students are unequivocally superior. Both the instrumental and vocal departments have experienced growth and always perform well at solo and ensemble contests as well as music festivals. 1983 saw the first school community musical which was a great success. The all-school play continues to draw many students into the area of drama. We would like to dedicate this book to all the students and faculty who have crossed the threshold of RHS and helped to develop it into the excellent school we see in 1984. Without the coordinated efforts exhibited by so many, we could have never kept pace with the times and evolved to our present day standards. There are many directions this book could have taken. We have elected to fuse the old and the new in this yearbook. After reviewing it we hope that you find the satisfaction in reading it that we have encountered in developing it and finally putting it together. RHS holds for us many memories and goodtimes. In this our twenty-fifth edition we hope you can recount your memories for many years to come. Ik A 2 SENIOR ROLL CALL CD cfi Front: K. Triebs, Secretary, W. Tracy, Treasurer. Back: J. Garvin, Vice President, J. Schroeder, President. Many classes of seniors have passed through the halls of Royall. The graduating class of 1984 marks a milestone in RHS history. Not only are they the Class of Silver Anniversary. The 1973 graduating class boast- ed 120 seniors. This years' sen- iors numbered only 81, but that didn't stop them from having a great year. Homecoming, Senior Banquet, and Senior skip-day will all leave memories to cher- ish in years to come. But none will compare with the memory of turning their tassle from left to right. Mark J. With the country clam- oring for an increased knowledge of science and math and in keeping with the times RHS has continued to expand these and other pro- grams throughout the years. The 1970's saw an extended interest in special education as mandated by Public Law 94:142 and Wiscon- sin Statute Chapter 115. Three quality EEN programs have been developed and specially trained staff support and supplement the instruction. Royall has always been ahead of the times. In 1977, a secondary reading program was developed two years before it became a state law. Gifted and talented instruction has been a vital concern for a num- ber of years. The SAP program is another fine example of keeping abreast of the times. The 1980's has also witnessed the emergence of the E-K-W Board of Education: Back Row: J. Meckstroth, P. Cleaver, A. We have had several choir advisors: Eleanor Wood- ruff, Mr. Moll, Mrs. Peterson, Miss Ruh, Ms. Kathi Luehmann, Linda Papp, Celestine Fojtik, and Julie Tranchita. Mrs. Woodruff was here the longest. J In the 1959-60 school year we only had Mixed Cho- rus and Girls Chorus. In the 1964-65 school year, there was a Boys' Quar- tet and a Senior Girls Quartet. In 1966 the Royalltones were started and were a musical division until 1973. We had a dance band in 1967. The Royallettes were started in 1967 and are still a part of our music program. In 1969 Acappella Choir was started and we had what was called Junior Varsity Choir. Swing Choir was started in 1971. Pep Band was formed in the 1973-74 school year. MARCHING BAND Front Row: A. Band The band started out with only 45 students with Mr. Ebbers the only band director. The band has grown over the years due to the hiring of other teachers to teach in the grade schools. Over the past 25 years, there have been three major band trips; Can- ada in 1974, Florida in 1977, and New York in 1981. In 1978, new marching band uni- forms along with new concert band uniforms were purchased for the first time since Royall High School began. PEP BAND Back Row: K. Anderson, T. Wilson, J. Mahr, R. In 1960, two new vocal groups were added, Royallettes, an all girls group, and Royalltones, which ap- plies to all boys. In the 70's, mixed choir became an all Freshman choir and the remaining students made up the Accapella Choir. Another new group added was the Swing Choir, a very talented group of stu- dents. They provide interesting en- tertainment by singing and danc- ing. The first community musical, Oklahoma , was presented to the public in 1983. It was directed by Julie Tranchita. King Mark crowns Queen Jane Homecoming itself is one of the more tradi- tional and memorable events throughout the year. Homecoming 1959 consisted of four cou- ples and the king and queen. The first king and queen were Fred Brown and Pat Martin. The bonfire was held on Saturday night while the football game was played on that after- noon as there weren't any lights. Through the years things refashioned a bit. One of those items which changed was the bonfire moved to a Friday night and the parade and skits were then on Thursday. The number of couples is something else that was modified as it was at one time up to as many as eight couples. In 1975 the cheerleaders initiated a spirit week with a dress down day, braid day, school color, and even mismatch day. 1983 was another mo- mentous occasion for Homecoming. Excite- ment was revitalized with the introduction of spirit contests, pie eating contests, and other class competitions. Shutting out Cashton was certainly a meaningful way of celebrating the event. Queen Jane crowns King Mark The Junior Prom has been a tradition since the beginning of Royall High School. The first queen was LaRene Snorek and the first king was Richard Preuss. Five couples made up the court, and the queen from the year before returned to place her crown on the present Royalty. Attire for prom has always been formal. In the early 1960 s the queen would be dressed in a long gown and the other girls would wear formal, but short dresses. The number of couples on court has remained at a stationary nine since 1976. Bands have always been a part of the ele- gance of prom. Because of the cost and the quality of the bands, the juniors of 1983 brought in the first disc jokey. In 1981 the Booster Club and the Parent Advisory Com- mittee joined to add to prom a post-prom party lasting from the end of the dance until dawn. The Royalty of 1984, Darren Green, King and Kay Splittgerber, Queen, danced to the theme Against All Odds among a gym adorned with rose, pink, and gray. Junior Prom PROM COURT: R. Murray, A. West, M. Martin, D. Waterman SI T Up The Down Staircase Continuing the fine tradition of past dramas at Royall, this year's All-School-Play was no exception. Up The Down Staircase , directed by Mr. Schultz was a celebrated suc- cess on November 11-12. The use of a split stage created the real scenes as well as flash- backs and made for an inter- esting performance. Peggy VanDeHey performed in her final role after having been part of every drama her four years at Royall. Many new ac- tors and actresses made their debut in this play. With the interest shown by the under- classmen, Royall should con- tinue with award winning performances in the future. ill 5 Graduation Graduation for the class of 1984 was frantic to say the the least. Events began on Tuesday May 22, with the annual senior banquet where many awards were present- ed. Tommy G. Thompson, Minor- ity Leader of the State Assembly was the commencement speaker for the 79 member class. Ever Since the World Begun was sung by a chorus of fifteen members of the class, accompanied by Julie Garvin. Shades of purple adorned the gym and the class voted the yellow rose as their class flower. Peggy VanDe- Hey, Dave Haseley, and Todd Se- branek received major awards at graduation. Many different coaches have come and gone, and un- til 1964 there was only one team. The first Royall teams of 1959 and 1960 were All-Conference Champions. This title was regained in 1965 and 1966. 1969 was a big year for Royall in football as the varsity team was ranked 3 in the A.P. Grid Poll, and 41 in the state. Royall has changed conferences many times, and our last conference title was in 1972. The hi- lights of our '83 season were when we shut out Cashton, and our tough game against Hillsboro. The football season was very rewarding for Coach Sulik and Coach DeLong. They felt that this year's squad was very dedi- cated. A new addition to our coaching staff was Tom Hodgson. Mr. Rigney was the first C.C. coach. During the two years he coached C.C., the teams were conference champs. Mr. Stegeman came in 1970. During this time, Royall hosted the largest C.C. meet. Mr. Vitcenda took over in 1976. The pre- sent coach is Mr. Cal- kins. Jim Crow went to state in 1979. Girls' Cross Country was ad- ded in 1981. This year Patty Sorenson and Pete Warsaw were named MVP's. 61 Volleyball Girls' volleyball originated during the 1972-1973 school year. Mrs. Erickson has been the coach for the varsity volleyball team since it was first formed. Over the years there have been only two changes in the coaching staff. In 1980, the team advanced to Regionals. and then in 1 82, the team did a tremendous job and ad- vanced to the semi-finals at Sectionals. The 1983 season was completed with a 4- 10 record. The biggest innovation for volleyball in 1983 was the addition of a JV Coach. The JV team finished the sea- son with only two losses. The addition of a second coach allowed Mrs. Erickson to spend more time with her Varsity squad. It is felt this is a great improvement for both squads. VARSITY VOLLEYBALL Back Row: D. Leis, B. The Gymnastics team was the only sport to have state participation in the last three years This was also the first year in which the gymnasts got full use of the gym in the morning practices. 2k A Though we only had four fresh- men on the team, all of these girls competed in the all-around posi- tion on the JV Team. Girls' Basketball has grown by leaps and bounds from its struggling 1972 beginnings. During the 1983-84 season, enough interest was shown to war- rant a freshman schedule. Without a doubt, the girls' basketball teams have had more coaches than any oth- er program — as a total of five people have been at the helm. During the 1977 sea- son the girls advanced to the sub-regionals which was their best showing in recent years. In 1977 the girls were awarded a seper- ate spectator and student bus to attend the big game and even had a pep assem- bly. Championships have been com- mon since wrestling was begun by Royall's only head coach Mr. De- long in 1965. Tom Masters and Jim Grant were the first entrants at state in 1968. 1983 was our most prosperous year with four confer- ence champs and four sectional qualifiers. Mr. Baisden replaced Mr. Flasher as the coach of the JV team this year. The wrestling squad has done very well in the past seasons, and will continue to do well in the seasons of the future. When the fall of 1959 be- gan there was only one squad for basketball and this was the entire cheerleading team. As things began to progress tryouts were held for football and later wrestling. In the years 1965-176 cheerleading en- joyed the greatest popularity. Pres- ently there are five squads; one for football, and two for both wrestling and basketball. The cheerleaders are a self-sufficient organization who not only cheer at all the games but also continue to earn their own money to finance uniforms and ac- cessories. FOOTBALL Back Row: T. Both varsity and JV teams have been present since I960, however, the freshman squad was not started until 1966. Many conference titles have been gained throughout the last 25 years of RHS. 1967, 68, 70, 71, 80, 81, 82, and 83 all brought number one conference standings. Mr. Splittgerber has been the varsi- ty coach since 1965, and has ob- tained 15 winning seasons. Recent- ly in the 1981-82 season Royall had its first real hopes, since 1968, of going to state when we were not only number one in the conference, but also Regional Champs. The JV team has also had much success under the guidance of Mr. Monty and new coach Mr. Fromader. 74 FRESHMAN Back Row: B. Vieth, S. Chase, D. Thompson, K. Ahlstrom, C. Fitzsim- mons, S. Sorenson, P. At the end of the 1982 season Mrs. Strelow handed over the coaching duties to Mrs. Erickson. Mr Baisden has as- sumed the duties of assistant coach. The class's responsibilities include production of the Panther Press, E-K-W Ex- press, Panther Yearbook, as well as articles for the Keystone. Exper- ience in the field of journalism is building with five having attended Josten's Summer Workshop for a week and the entire staff another in September. The contributing ef- forts worked especially hard in promoting the 25th anniversary edition of the yearbook. Class members purchased T -shirts for publicity and were able to sell more ads than ever before. The purchase of an additional camera was made possible through the sale of jerseys, buttons, and concessions. Student Council and Usherettes The Student Council has been a part of Royall since the begin- ning. In 1959 it was supervised by Mr. Boettcher, who was the high school principal. The stu- dent council is made up of three student elected representatives and the vice-president of each class. The council serves as a mediator for students and administration; sponsors activities and under- takes new projects each year. They attended seminars in Bara- boo and Richland Center to en- rich their leadership skills this past year. This year under the guidance of Mr. Preuss they took co-responsibility for Homecoming, activities, Christ- mas party, and recognized the teachers on National Teachers Day. In order to raise money they sold rolls in the morning, and sponsored dances. They are also in the process of setting up an activity pass system for next year. This year the officers were: President Joe Schraufnagel, Vice-President Scott Splitt- gerber. Secretary Barb Sartori and Treasurer Julie Garvin. In the past year, the Usherettes have expanded to a record 20 members. This organization provides hostesses for games and taking tickets at school ac- tivities as well as helping out at graduation. This group was first formed in 1959 as a service orga- nization under the direction of Mrs. Pat Dutton. STUDENT COUNCIL Back Row: M. Gruen, D. Schwartz, J. Schraufnagel, D. Thorson, D. Throughout the years, members have taken their part in the traditional new-member potluck, Christmas car- oling, fund raisers and the annual overnight trip. Girls of the past have sponsored dances, sewn football pants, went bowling and swimming and hosted socials with other FHA's, in which they also played volleyball. The FHA sponsored a Parenting Pro- gram in which students were alerted of the responsibilities and impor- tances of adulthood and raising chil- dren. A significant buddy system proved rewarding for the elderly at Edgewood. In their spare time each week, many girls visited with and spent some time with their buddy. FHA Officers: Jody Miller, Treasurer; Cathy Nightengale, Secretary; Jana Geier, President; Michelle Martin. Vice-President 9S FFA FFA is another in the many organi- zations which have been around as long as Royall High School. It has also been one of the most active of our school groups. Students in FFA participate in activities all year around with the judging of cattle, soil, crops and mechanics. In the Spring the annual FFA Banquet rec- ognizes students who have done an outstanding job. During the sum- mer they participate in the Elroy, Jueneau County, Monroe County and Wisconsin State Fairs. In 1982 an FFA Alumni Chapter was start- ed to supplement the student chap- ter. 1983-84 brought a new malt machine to Royall as a fund raising venture. Dr. Richard Bristol of the UW School of Veterinary Medicine was the featured speaker at the 1984 Banquet. FFA Back Row: B. Wilde, J. Steinmetz, B. Clapper, J. Bradley, J. Lyddy, J. Atteln, D. Forensics Unfortunately in 1984, Forensics doesn't enjoy the amount of stu- dent participation interest it did back in 1959 when Ruth Norton, Beverly Hubmer and Carol Bur- singer were the advisors. There weren't the number of activities available then either. The 1984 team was composed of eleven members, eight of whom advanced to sectional competition on March 24, in LaCrosse. Robyn Urmanski and Stephanie Wick represented us at state. Mr. McHenry and Mr. Kueppers continue to advise the students who elect to become a part of the program. FORENSICS Back Row: K. Bradley, J. International Students Twenty-two foreign exchange stu- dents have attended RHS begin- ning with the 1969 school year when the A.F.S. program was initi- ated. Colleen Kozlowski spent the 1978-1979 school year on the Work Exchange Program in Denmark. The A.F.S. student chapter was strong from 1969-1973 and reorga- nized during the 1980 school year. Royall was privileged to host A.F.S. students as well as a Rotory Ex- change students. In 1983 four A.F.S. exchange students were in attendance at Royall which broke the previous record of three in 1983. Patty Meckstroth also went to West Germany for six weeks dur- ing the 1983 summer vacation. This year we were fortunate to have Ann Schaefer, Claudia Castro, and D'arne Greenway. Front: A. Many people have had a hand in making this happen. This year is a particularly special year since it is our 25th Anni- versary Edition and we have attempted to produce a history book within our yearbook. There are a few people who deserve special recogni- tion. A special Thanks to Fehrenbach Studios for taking such fine photographs. The entire staff worked very hard on this edition of THE PAN- THER, however, these three people deserve a little extra recognition: Melissa Lenski, Tuesday Warmka, and Mary Conley. Most of all, 1 would like to thank someone who did a tremendous job, Miss Schulenburg, our yearbook advisor. She made sure that we got everything in to our publisher on time, gave us a little push when it was needed, she taught us what to do and how to do it right. She made our class a good learning experience and a lot of fun. As we close this book, we also close another year of our life. We hope that you enjoy the memories caught in this yearbook as much as we do. It was a lot a hard work and fun putting it all together. We truly believe, as we hope you will, that it was well worth all the hours we put into THE 1984 PAN- THER. Mary Kranz Editor V ROYALL
