Meckstroth Superintendent: Allen Schraufnagel Principalg Barkley Ander SOD Changes and innovations are not new to Royall High School. This year there have many modifications in old programs along with the addition of many new ones. One major addition was the Student Assistance Program. The Student Assistance Program includes many different groups to deal with students in chemically dependent homes and support groups for chemically involved students. These groups were held during school, their size and how often they were held varied depending on each individual group. Another new advancement at Royall was the introduction of the computer in many aspects of education. The students were individually taught the basics of the computer and how it can help them in their studies. This year when the students returned to school they were greeted with brightly painted lockers, a new roof over the library and the gymnaisum had a fresh coat of paint. One addition to the track field was the building of a shed needed for storage of sports equipment. This shed is large enough for storage, restrooms, and a concession stand, Bohen, Lillian Business Education Bowersox, William Drivers Education Brandt, Peter Vocational Agriculture Calkins, Kirk Mathematics Campbell, Mark Industrial Arts Delong, Dan Physical Education Dougherty, Jerrold Biology Ebbers, Robert Instrumental Music Erickson, Joyce Librarian Flasher, Fred ED Hawes, Rodger Mathematics Johnson, Mary Home Economics Faculty .gi Kalodrich, Roger English Kueppers, John English McHenry, David English Monty, John Social Studies Murray, Yvonne Home Economics Petrowitz, Marge Business Education Post, Barbara Science Preuss, Robert LD Schulenburg, Sandra Reading Strelow, James Industrial Arts Strelow, Verona Physical Education Sulik, Jack EMR Tranchita, Julie Vocal Music Trodahl, Dane Art VanDel-ley, Leonard Social Studies Vitcenda, Joseph Science Weger, John Guidance Counselor Bailey, Deb SAP Coordinator I-lenthorne, Janet Bookkeeper f Printer Kozlowski, Beverly Secretary Weed, Joyce Teacher's Aide Faculty W J.. 5 tv f W5 Q iff I-1 5: wf gf' 5 XL 5 2 , may , J-,ff ' ai? , ff i , fi I Q ,W Q? we f ,.c.. They rent an apartment with the neigh- bors across the hall who run to and from the kitchen for milk for their baby. The alias poet-counterfeiter overhead is printing money at all hours. To top it off a crabby, mon- ey hungry land lady finally discov- ers there are three renters rather than two. The play was a success, with a few minor incidents. One of the leads lost her voice and the po- liceman's gun flew out into the audi- ence. Even with the mishaps the audience found it enjoyable. Rogers and Hammersteirfs Oklahoma was presented April 8-10 in the audito- rium to an enthusiastic crowd. A cooperative community effort made the event possible. Elroy Civ- ic Arts Association along with many community volunteers were re- sponsible in making this first com- munity musical successful. A din- ner-theatre highlighted the Satur- day evening performance. With the interest displayed by the audience and community, future musicals and cooperative events can be planned. For the Class of 1983 it was the culmination of much hard work and even more fun. Dr. Terrance Sheridan, a Kendall native, was the featured speaker at the Commencement Exercises. Kathy Sartori received the Walk- er Scholarship and Mike Murphy the Kendall Jaycee Scholarship. Numerous other awards were presented at the Senior Banquet on Monday, May 16, 1983. Commencement for all was something exciting, going on to college, getting married, or for some going to work. X ef gf i ,.-,,. It will be remembered as a season of upsets. The Panthers lost to a surprising Bangor team, but collected themselves and went on to defeat the highly noted Cashton Eagles. Defeating the Cashton Eagles was the highlight of the season. This was the first victory over Cashton in the past four years in the Scenic Bluffs Conference. At the close of the season the team se- lected Mike Murphy as captain, and Mike Preuss the most valuable player. Bernie Benish was selected by the coaches in the conference to be on the All-Conference Defensive first team. Throughout the year it seemed as though our squad tried different ways to lose games. Should they develop consis- tency they will be a hard team to beat next year , concluded Coach Delong. FOOTBALL Back row R Jent D Thorson M Bunk S Gruen E VanDerVoort K Weber, D. Green, J, Greeno, R. Riley This year the Royall Volleyball team, under the coaching of Joyce Erickson and Captain Ka- ren Parrish, finished their season with 11 wins and 5 losses. With only four returning lettermen, the girls had to work very hard to obtain a better record than last year. Most valuable player was a tie between Genise Prell and Karen Parrish. All-Confer- ence selections were: First Team Karen Parrish, Second Team Genise Prell, and Honorable Mention going to Barb Miller and Karen Jordan. Manager Cathy Eno and Scorer Amy Brooks are to be commended for their ef- forts. The highlight of the season was the defeat of Bangor on their own court. The JV found the going a little rougher with many inexperienced members on the team. Although the sen- iors will certainly be missed, with so many underclassmen filling out the squad, next year should be an interesting season. Cross Country Being young and inexperienced, the Royall Cross Country Team didnlt set the Conference on fire. With only a few returning lettermen they put forth a courageous effort. Mary Conley was again the Captain and MVP for the second year in a row for the girl harriers. Ken Crow was named Captain as well as MVP for the boy's team. Royall's own Invitational brought teams from as far away as Richland Center. The male contingent came in 4th out of 5. Ken Crow and Peter Warsaw both ran well enough to earn medals. The Girls Cross Country Team unfortunately came in 4th out of 4. Although it may not have been one of their better meets, they never gave up. With the runners steadily improving next year's Cross Country Teams should be worth watching. s GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY: Back row, T. Brey, Coach Calkins, M. Conley Front row, T. Smith, P. Sorenson. The Varsity Basketball team ended their season with a 15-5 overall re- cord. ln conference they were 12-2, sharing the Scenic Bluffs title with New Lisbon. It was a season of close ones for the Panthers, none of the five losses were by more than 3 points. On the other hand a number of the victories were exciting one or two point games. The team consisted of a number of strong 'basketball players. Scott Rueckheim lead the team in rebounds with 181. Bob Brown lead the Pan- thers in scoring as well as the Confer- ence, he had 393 points overall and 290 accumulated in conference games. Randy Frye won the free- throw trophy at the close of the season shooting 7905 from the line. Bob Brown and Scott Rueckheim made the All-Conference first team. Randy Frye received honorable men- tion. The Junior Varsity were outstanding in the conference once again. They finished the season with a 16-2 record. The freshman squad was impressive, winning 9 games and only losing 3. It was an exciting season for players, the student body, and all the rest of the Panther fans. Varsity Coach Marty Splittgerber. From the first meet to the final one, the team performed outstanding routines and worked together to perfect difficult skills. Even though the team was plagued with sprained ankles, pulled muscles, and shin splints toward the end, the young team did manage to win their share of the meets that they competed in. With the help of their excellent coaches, Miss Schulenburg and Mrs. Strelow, the girls entered the conference meet with confidence and assurance. Royall's all-around gymnast, Bonni Diderrich, placed in every event. After the conference meet, with renewed enthusiasm, ev- eryone got ready for sectionals. Royall gymnasts had a very good night when the performances of two of the girls earned them 6th places. r sr , s - - c.. . ..,, . q f tsktsgiggfti, s V K -F - t ., ' - .,,, . ' 5. Varsity Baseball Although the weather was anything but Spring-like this year's baseball team had a nearly flawless season. Their record of 13-1 was one of the best in recent years. Superior hitting combined with excep- tional defensive play proved to be the winning advantage for this year's squad. Unfor- tunately they couldn't make it 3 in a row when they lost to New Lisbon on May 20, 1983. John Garvin was selected the MVP and earned the Batting Championship with a .489 average. Performing groups are Acappella, Swing, Mixed, and Royallettes, all of which have obtained an increase in members. The activities for this year's vocalists were the Pops Concert, Christmas Con- cert, and performing for the Lions and other organizations. The year's cheese and sausage money raiser was not as big a success as we hoped, but we did well. At the start of the year, each class elected their four officers. The juniors, returning to Royall for their third year, apparently had the most spirit, shown by winning the Homecoming spirit trophy. The class, along with ad- visors, Mr. Strelow and Mr. Bowersox, worked hard for their big event- the Junior Prom. Sophomores, second-year stu- dents in high school, were start- ing to get in the swing of things. Mr. Dougherty and Miss Post were their advisors. Their major fund-raiser was the selling of jer- seys. Last, but not least, the freshmen first entered the halls of Royall on Friday, August 20, for an in- troduction to high school life- Freshmen Orientation. Mrs. Erickson and Mr. Preuss, the class advisors, assisted them throughout the year. After learn- ing what side of the hall to walk on, they adjusted quite well to Royall High School. This year the support was overwhelming. One new innovation of this year's advertis- ing patrons are the highly respected farm- ers, who play a vital role in the support of the communities. From selling advertising we were able to provide a true historical record of the 1982- 83 school year. We appreciate the fine gen- erosity exhibited by members of our commu- nities. The staff sincerely thanks them for all of their support, financial and moral. This year could be considered a new beginning for the yearbook, which meant more work for the staff in getting used to the new ideas and changes. Some of the many changes were that Yearbook companies were switched. Color has been added to one of the more memorable events, and we have greatly enriched the advertising section. A few very important people have played a large role in the success of this book. Special recognition should be given to Fehrenbach Studios and Mr. Strelow for the photography used in this edition. Miss Schulenburg spent many hours showing me what to do and how to do it. Pat Hickey's encour- agement was certainly helpful and kept us going. Also, I would like to thank Patty Finucan, Genise Prell, and Shelly Vlasak for all their help in getting a large part of the Panther designed and put to- gether. One other group that I would really like to thank is the rest of the Panther Staff for their extraordinary dedication and perserverence in meeting our deadlines on time. We feel that we have covered Royall High School as we saw it and we hope we have been able to preserve many memories for you for the years to come.
