On May eighth, nineteen hundred and seventy-one, the class of seventy-two presented Love Story. The gym was decorated in dark green, mint, and sil- ver, with a swing in a rock garden. The court was present- ed to the audience by coming through a large silver book opened by Richard Houzner and Kevin Miller. The court car- ried bouquets ofdaisies of various colors. Together they lit the bonfire as the pep band played the theme, Colour My World. A large crowd was in attendance to hear the speakers and enjoy the skits presented by classes and clubs. Our Homecoming Parade was held Friday afternoon. Six floats were entered and the Junior and Senior bands played. The game that night with Westby ended with a disappointing loss of 22-0. Saturday was the dance in the gym. After the dance, the couples went their separate ways to enjoy the remainder of the evening. Bonfire sparks Homecoming Big battle against Westby. The four students and one alternate were tested on their quick, correct responses to high school questions. Our team competed against the tough LaCrosse central team. Ifonly Royall's team hadn't been so camera shy, we might have done better dur- ing the contest. NHS The National Honor Society is the only organization at Royall whose members are selected by their peers. To be eligible for the society, a stu- dent must acquire and keep a B + average. Initiation ceremonies are held each year for the new members elected to NHS. They receive certifi- cates of membership and cards em- blematic ofthe NHS. Speakers are chosen for this occa- sion to speak on leadership, scholar- ship, character, and service. After the ceremony refreshments are fur- nished for the members, parents, and relatives. ...ANDTHEB DPL YEDO TWIRLERS: Nikki, Kathy, and Sonja. Half-time entertainment. M AJORETTE5 Ann' ROW l: N. They gave a pre-game show and a half- time show for all of our home football games. The Royall Band marches for var- ious contests and celebrations. At the Vi- roqua Horse and Colt Show, they compet- ed with ten other bands and won first prize. The Pep Club plays at all home basket- ball games and everyone seems to enjoy the contemporary numbers they render. The band will play as a Class A concert and marching band at the Spring Festival, which will be held in New Lisbon. Twenty-five or six to four Zenner, S. Thayer, J. Kouba, P. Madden, D. Rego, S. Sophmores, Juniors, and Seniors make up the A Cappella Choir. They gave four concerts during the year: the pops concert, the Christmas concert, Handel's Messiah, and the Spring concert. They sing as a Class A chorus at the annual Spring Festival. The J.V. Singers are Freshmen. They also take part in the pops concert, the Christmas concert, and the Spring concert. Royallettes is a select group of girls. Each of the singers is a member of her class triple trio. A new addition to the vocal department this year is the Swing Choir. These 22 students sing popular music, and are often accompanied by drums, guitar, and piano. ACAPELLA ROW 1: V. Anderson, S. Brey, K. Preuss, G. Sanderson, S. Miller, D. Zirk, B. Collins, G. The members en- courage students to support their team by cheering at games and pep rallies. They also help the cheerlead- ers by painting signs and preparing skits for the pep sessions. GIRLS IN ACTION Although the Girls Athletic Asso- ciation of Royall may be a fun club , its purpose is to encourage participation in sports and to pro- mote fair play and good sportsman- ship among all girls, The girls meet once a week to develop their skill in such sports as football, volleyball, basketball, tumbling, apparatus, badminton, and softball. ln Spring they meet with various schools in the area to compete in track and field. At the end of the track season the girls compete in the state track meet. The best athletes receive awards and letters at the end ofthe year. Where What? t . They may enter in interpreta- tive prose or poetry, four minute speaking, original oratory, signifi- cant speeches, memorized declama- tion, and public address. In the fall we at Royall were very proud to have our one-act play, A Thing of Beau- ty, go to the state contest. DEDICATED DEBATERS This year the topic for the Debate Club is, Resolve: that the jury sys- tem in the United States should be significantly changed. Since the club is so small, they decided to de- bate among themselves instead of competing with other schools. Con- trary to some people's beliefs, debat- ing is not simply arguing. It is, in- stead, doing research to find evi- dence to support your opinions and being able to express them, ROW l: Miss Krohn, G, Clausier, B. Collins, J. Kouba. ROW 2: Mr. Kammerud, K. The club meets once a month to discuss current problems and to plan activities, such as an annual cake sale and a winter recreational trip. In the spring the club goes on a trip to a library - either public or school - to observe the various ways a library functions for the community it serves. EXPERIENCE THROUGH EXPERI ENTS Although we have no Einsteins in Roy- all, we have an active group of students interested in science. Anyone taking a sci- ence course can join this organization. They hold meetings during the weekly ac- tivity periods. Late in the fall they traveled to Chicago to visit the Museum of Science and Industry. They are hoping to take another trip this spring. The girls host par- ent's night during football season, hand out programs at home games and concerts, sponsor a coat check for basketball season, assist parents at P-T conferences, usher at gradua- tion, and other services. Royall is very proud to have usherettes like these. 66 NM N The Lettermen's Club is com- posed of all athletes who have re- ceived their letter in any athletic event. Their purposes are centered around promoting athletics and de- veloping leadership and responsibili- ty among its members. Each year the R men sell candy, and it was through their efforts that Royall was able to purchase the scoreboard for football games at the Elroy park. The highlight of the year is the Annual Athletic Banquet. At this time all Royall athletes are honored for their recognition of individual sporting events. LEFT TO RIGHT: M. Martalock, D. Larson, J. On December sixth the club plans to at- tend German Day in LaCrosse. Sometime in the Spring they plan to celebrate Pan American Day. They will have a Christmas Party where they will sing German and Spanish songs, eat German and Spanish food, and enjoy skits. MEET HPACHI az NNW Ch, come on now! We are very proud to have with us this year as our AFS student Grabiel La Cruz. He is from Villa Maria del Triunfo, Peru. Grabiel was born on February 27, 1954 in Cahete, Peru. He has completed twelve years of school in Peru tone year of kindergarten, six years of primary, and five years of secondaryj. He made application to the AFS in Lima, Peru May of 1970. He requested to go to the United States because he had always dreamed of living there. He came to the United States on August 13, 1971. His most satisfying observation is the free life that Americans have as compared to people of Peru. One of his greatest experiences was the plane trip from Peru to New York. He at- tended a get-together ofa thousand AFS students from all over the world in New York City. A talent show was put on by all the AFS students. Also, he has enjoyed traveling with his host family, the Leonard Ficks, to various parts ofWisconsin, Min- nesota, and Illinois. He especially enjoyed the Christmas decorations in the Chicago Loop. His greatest dislike ofcoming to the United States is having to spend two winters in the same year. 34 L v . ik - ff' M 25 f Grabiel and his U.S. brother. A.F.S. HOSTS GRABIEL The American Field Service CAFSJ, is an organi- zation design to exchange students from foreign countries and the United States. The purpose of this service is to acquaint the foreign student with the people, customs, and traditions of the country that they are visiting. Also, they inform the people of the community they are visiting about their ways oflife. This is the third year Royall has had an oppor- tunity to host a foreign exchange student. We have had students from Australia, Austria, and this year from Peru. ROW l: G. La Cruz, Mr. Schaeffer. ROW 2: J. Ladwig, B. Hill, J. Austin, S. Siekert, B. I-Iyer, S. Miller, J. Chambliss. We are confident most of the students will agree that the changes made this a more enjoyable annual. But some 4 well, we can't please everyone! The staff started out as a large group, but the people on the left are the ones that actually did the work. We hope that twenty years from now when you dig this annual out of the attic, you will want to look through it from cover to cover, not missing a word or a picture. The students involved in the Photo Club learn how to produce effective pic- tures by experimenting with printing as well as the actual taking of pictures. This year the Photo Club put on a light show, featuring colorful slides and flashing lights, for the band and chorus pops concert. PA THER PRESS P BLISHERS The newspaper staff originally was an organization, but this year it was decided that the advanced typing class would publish the Panther Press. The class gathers information, jokes, and poetry to produce an issue of the Panther Press every two weeks. The girls of the advanced typing class write all the news articles and type the entire paper themselves. Each issue is exchanged with other schools. Some are as far away as Kansas. ROW l: B. There have also been times we didnit want our high school years to ever end f nights of our prom and homecoming, raising over S500 in one night with our Donkey Ball game, and performing and watching our musical productions. We know that after graduation we will never be all together again. It's strange to think of how we ll all change. Of course, there will be the physical changes f beer bellies and wrinkles. But we'll all change inside, too. lt's sad to think about the fact that Weill all grow farther and farther apart, until at last, all we'll have left in common are the memories of our four years togeth- er at Royall. -fi-row-ting l lu 'lllllwmllgllll .U Mary Arrtus David Artz Janet Austin Robert Baltz Jeri Bean Floyd Bender Stephen Bialas Breakfast of Champions!
