The year seemed to fly by fast, but with the help of this yearbook it will always remain alive. Through this entire book you shall find many treasured moments and accomplish- ments that were made throughout the year. This school year fulfilled many peoples' dreams. One of the biggest dreams that be- came reality this year was the girls' The Yearbook Staff The 1985-86 Yearbook staff com- prised seven people. They were from left to right: Dan Royer-advisor; De- vin Lee-Business Manager; Michelle Boling Copy Editor; Sara Bergman- Co editor; Tom Barger- Advertising Editor; Carrie Fenske- Sales Represen- tative; Tom Mohr- Editor. basketball team winning their 4A sub-state championship and get- ting to travel to Salina to play in the state tourney. This was an event that had not taken place in over 10 years. But this was not the only spectacular event that took place this year at Royal Valley. Many more events, some of them spectac- ular, some of them quite ordinary, can be found in the pages of this book. As you flip through the pages, you see many familiar faces that we called our friends. We recall those many good times that we shared in the 1985-86 year. We often laugh and get a humorous smile on our face when thinking of these times. Nothing will ever replace those special memories and events in our hearts. 2 Fred Staker Gerald Leonard Wendell Geiger, Pete Schuetz, Richard Bontrager, Myron Stithem. This was shown in the hard work they put forth every prac- tice. Out of twenty-five morning prac- tices there was only one time that a play- er was late. Coach Boldra was very proud of this fact. He felt he had never been more pleased with a bunch of kids. Coach Boldra had many reasons though to be pleased with his players. With every game, they seemed to im- prove and there was very few times they slipped back. They played very well throughout the season and was an excit- ing team to watch. Three times the team reached game highs of sixty points. Also the team came home with a fifth place finish in the Silver Lake tourney. Coach Boldra feels he's going to miss this team, but he knows their going to go on to be excellent players. He thinks by the time these players are Seniors, they have the potential of being League Champs. The entire team promises to make Panther bas- ketball very exciting during the next few years. I really enjoyed working with this group of student-athletes, they were very dedicated and really loved the game. This is what helped to make this season a very enjoy- able one. These words were stated by Coach Hill after recollecting about the season just gone by. Nothing but truth could be found in these words, you could see it when the team played. The players always showed much class and seemed to point out all the good in the sport of basketball. Most all of the players from last years' team returned to participate this season. The players worked ex- tensively hard in the off-season to improve, and mature. The coaches felt the team had a lot of talent and an abundance of depth. All of the team members had a lot of high expectations of them- selves and of the team. The team set a lot of goals and were fortunate enough to reach most of them. The Panthers had an overall re- cord of 15-7. But the team felt they were much better than their record shows. Consistency was the key to going where the Panthers really wanted to go. Yet, the team is still young, and they feel that they have a bright future ahead of them. Are you playing B-ball or practicing ballet Harri- son? Their only two losses came from Sabetha. Their first lost was only by 3 points and the second was by two points. They also won the Royal Val- ley Invitational Junior Varsity Tour- nament by defeating Perry and St. Mary's. Ms. Bartunek, the coach of the J.V. team, felt very highly of the team this year. She thought they progressed tre- mendously throughout the season and believed that the base of the J.V. team was better than any other J.V. team in the league, especially in defense. Roy- al Valley ended the season with the best J.V. record in the league. High Scorer for the year was Lynn Cosby with 157 points, with an aver- age of 10 points per game. Brande Pease was second high scorer for the year with a total of 91. Sara Bergman had the highest field goal percentage with 37%. She was 19 of 51 from the floor. Shelley Fisher had the highest free throw percentage with 68%, mak- ing 26 of 38. The year was highlighted by a first place finish in the Royal Valley Junior Varsity Tournament. Four juniors, Brian Waller, Nick Ward, Mark Kern and Jeff Hills, led the team in most overall team statistics for the year. Each of these players will be important members of the varsity basketball team next year. Seven sophomores filled out the squad and contributed both as starters at times and as bench sup- port. Scott Gooderl, Jim Stithem, and Dusty Albright all provided some important offensive and de- fensive help. Tom Wheeler, Robert Eigenman, Brent Hill and Chris Champagne played important sub- stitute roles. The past two years the JV boys has compiled a 25-9 record. The re- turning juniors and the upcoming sophomores will get to face the challenge of continuing this out- standing performance. By mid-season, around tournament time, the girls turned their attitudes around and once again had confi- dence in themselves. By the end of the year, the Lady Panthers had a stack of accomplishments they could look back on and feel proud of. This year the Lady Panthers played in the Nemaha Valley Tour- ney, where they came home with a third place plaque. Senior Cheryl Hopkins made an all-time record at the tourney by scoring an awesome thirty seven points in one game. Cheryl's efforts throughout the season earned her a spot on the All Big 7 team and was chosen to play in the Pizza Hut Classic at Wash- burn. Another senior who earned honors was Lacey Link who was named honorable mention to the All Big 7. The biggest thrill for the team came tough when they won their substate bracket and traveled to Sa- lina to play in state action. It had been ten years since any team from Royal Valley had went to state. It was a big thrill for the whole school and the community as well as for the team. It was an experience that will remain in the minds of the Lady Panthers for many years to come. Coach Hayn does have one regret about this year's team though. He will be losing 5 seniors who have been with him for the past three years. But he does have 4 returning letterman coming back next year who are excited for the new season. The night was made complete when R.V. stomped the Hiawatha Redskins for another Panther victory. 72 Wrestler's Progress Continues Out of three years that Royal Valley has participated in wrestling this year was the most outstanding. Many indi- vidual records were broken and, for some, dreams of state were fulfilled. Royal Valley started their season out with a tough loss against Washburn Rural with a score of 24-39. As the year progressed, though, so did the Panthers with wins against Perry, Nemaha Val- ley, Maur Hill, and other teams in the Big 7 League. Individual outcomes for the season included: Ray Hernandez, Sr., with most indiv. wins, 27, best winning per- centage, 27-2, most take downs, 65, and most team pts., 149.5. Brian Delaney also broke the R.V. records with gains in most indiv. matches won, 35, with Tracy Joy having the fastest pin with a time of 16 seconds. 2 team members went to state this year, Ray Hernandez and Tracy Joy, with Ray placing 2nd in his wt. divi- sion. Mr. Holloman commented, I was very satisfied with the way our season went this year. As you know, we are very young and inexperienced. Those traits cost us many matches that veter- an wrestlers would have won. The team had over 460 matches this year. Wrestlers ended their season with a duel record of 9-6 and a League record of 3-3. Not only did we have a new track facili- ty which aided in our performance, but we also had a record breaking year. The boys teams got off to a good start by placing first at our home meet and never placing any lower than 2nd throughout the sea- son. School records that were broken were Carey Leonard, 300 m. hurdles with a time of 41.8, Craig McClane soared to a record break- ing long jump of 2T7 , Jerit Lee high jumping 6' and a new 400 Re- lay time of 45.8. The team consisted of Bruce Hamlin, Scott Walrod, Craig McClane, and Devin Lee. The teams overall record was 36-5. The girls team was also one to be remembered with Lynn Cosby gliding over the 100 m. Hurdles for a time of 17.0 and Susan Kern breaking the 400 in 63.9. The teams record was 28-13-1. Besides Varsity and upperclass- men breaking records, the Frosh re- cords were also broken. Deb Wil- son, Long Jump 14'7 Vi , Heather Link, High J:ump 5'2 , Janelle Grose, 3200 13:33, Susan Kern, 400 63.9, and the 800 Relay team, con- sisting of Susan Kern, Leslie Ham- ilton, Shelly Thornburg, and Mary Parrett, with a time of 1:56. The boys also had 2 record beakers. Shawn Root, 800 2:12 and also in the 1600 in 4:40 and Jeff Schuetz, Discuss 117'. The teams, as a whole, ended their season by winning 295 med- als. A Few Friendly Faces Foreign Exchange Students Visit. This year was a good year for foreign exchange at Royal Valley. Four students attented from other countries. These students were as follows: Haardt, Astrid, W. Germany; Lehre, Henning, Sweden; Olalsen, Frode, Norway; Alderberth, Fredrik, Sweden, and Guerrero, Luis, from Columbia Above Left: Haardt, Astrid: Below Left: Lehre, Henning: Lower Middle: Guerrero, Luis; Bottom Right: Olalsen, Frode; Upper Right Guerrero, Luis, Olalsen, Frode, Lehre, Henning, Alderberth, Fredrik, Haardt, Astrid 79 The moment had finally come. It was the night that all the 1986 Seniors had been waiting for since they started kin- dergarten 12 years ago. This was a night the Seniors would never forget as all 78 marched in to the song Pomp and Cir- cumstance played by the band. The mo- ment had finally arrived after waiting all year, so patiently. All the schooling and all the advice the Seniors had received over the years was about to pay off as they were getting ready to venture out into the world as independent indivi- duals. After the welcoming speech, vale- dictorian speech, salutatorian speech and the prayer were all given, the school board president called off each individ- ual name of the Seniors, to present them with their diploma. The night was a mixture of emotions. You could see many smiles on the faces of the Seniors while others had tears. Some realized this was it, the night they would be leaving Royal Valley High School and also the night they would be leaving many of their friends to move on to their new lives. For the rest of the Seniors, the night of graduation held nothing but happiness. They knew they had finally made it and would be set free to do their own thing and follow their own destiny. But yet, while marching in, some still got that shaky feeling inside. The last minute thought of can I really make it out there in the world and will I be successful, or will I fall on my face crossed many minds of the Seniors. But the feeling soon disappeared after all of the graduating Seniors through up their caps and tassels in the air with a feeling of happiness and excitement for what lay ahead of each of them. so Senior Class Of 1986 Reaches Its Dream Brian Kesler enjoyed the moment. Roses were given to each graduate. Traci Schnacker had the second highest grade point average in the class and spoke at the beginning of the ceremony on the im- portance of friendship. Carey Leonard earned the highest grade point average in the class. His speech stressed the importance of aiming high and striving to be the best. Trade Cochran was all smiles about “get- ting out. Nancy Tichenor and Shawnna Wabaunsee rejoiced about their accomplishments. Tom Barger received congratulations from his father and girlfriend after the ceremony. Tom Mohr got this hug from Angela Rodman. Nancy Ward received these flowers from Matt Poort. Kim Stithem and Penny Gooderl made last minute adjustments to their caps as the waited in the commons for the final walk down to the track. Mike Gilliland has one thing to say about the whole thing: “I did it! Spring Concert Let The Sun Shine In The people that attended the Royal Valley Spring Music Concert were entertained by the Hilites, Soundsations, and the Royal Valley Panther Band. The first portion of the show was succeeded by a presentation of one dozen roses and a Thanlc you card from the Hilites to Miss Stewart for being a wonderful teacher for the past two years. To follow the vocal music presentation was the amazing Panther Band. Exaltation was the first selection then followed by Minuteman. Kvrie. Duncannon Overture, and Birdland. To end the festive evening with spirit and light hearts to Band performed the traditional Wabash Cannonball, which has become a very important part of the band through the years.
