Reach For The Stars Volume 10 Hoyt, Kansas 66440 Published By The Yearbook Staff 2 Mark, John, and Mike hold a major conference. Bob, Greg, and Shane take a break while building the ticket booth. I Reach For The Stars 7aWe O Contents Organizations Sophomores Faculty Athletics Advertising Advei 79 5 In Memory Of Rose Calderwood Rose was a student at Royal Valley High School and a member of Upward Bound for the past three years. Rose was a good student, talented musician and a very outgoing and personable young lady. Rose seemed to know everyone and usually had a thought or an idea to share. We each knew Rose well, and she will remain a memory to us all for life. Rose, her mother and stepfather (Mary and Bob Willis) and a stepsister (Laura Willis) all were killed in a very tragic automobile accident on Friday, November 20, 1981. One sister (Robin Calderwood) survived the accident. It takes a lot of hard work and ability to publish a yearbook. The yearbook staff first collected facts and pictures about RVHS students, faculty and staff, clubs, and events. The pictures were printed, pages designed, and copy written to try to meet the dead- lines set for them. “The driving force behind the yearbook staff is the editor and assistant editor. Seniors Penny Everhart and Michelle Stuke served as these respectively and did a super job,” commented Miss McKain. “The yearbook staff worked hard to make a book of memo- ries of the 1981-82 year at RVHS worth looking back on in the years to come.” Michelle checks over pages. Youth Advisory Council YAC — the Youth Advisory Coun- cil — designed to act as liason be- tween students and food service, had a very busy year. In the fall, 3 mem- bers of the Council attended a YAC Conference. Later in the year, YAC hosted the Senior Citizens of the Mayetta Hoyt Community. The Senior Citizens were given a tour of the school, visited many classes, and ate lunch at the school. YAC also sponsored a “Food Survey.” Chair- man, Scott Boling commented, “I felt that the Youth Advisory Council was very productive this year. I think the YAC will be even more involved in the years to come.” Front Row(l-r): Marilee Shenk, Andrea Romero. Middle(l-r): Karin Bauach, Scott Boling. Stock Market Many mornings during the second semester, the stock market met to discuss which stocks would be wise to buy and which would be safer to sell. Their hard work was repaid when they received 5th place in their region and were ranked 18th in the state. Two-year member Terri Woodbury said “Being in stock market was a lot of fun. We learned how the stock market works in real life.” Charlie Luebbe finding a new stock to invest in. Never before has an education for a child been as valuable an investment as it is today. Indeed, an individual’s success depends upon his becoming an educated person, a person with the ability to analyze, manage, and solve the problems facing individuals and groups in our modern society. The residents of Unified School District No. 337 recognize and accept the validity of these statements. Thus they have provided schools for the young people of the district. The successful bond election this year reafirms this district’s commitment to education. Wise students will do their best to take full advantage of the educational opportunities that are provided for them. It is with these thoughts in mind that I extend to all of you best wishes for success in your endeavors. May your lives be filled with the spirit and hope of a better world for all men. Gerald Leonard Principal The 1981-82 school year has provided us with many moments that we’ll long remember. It seems like only yesterday that we were enrolling and preparing for a new year. Young athletes have the opportu- nity to develop the skills needed for future participation in varsity sports. “Although the freshman record was not exceptionall good, the girls showed a lot of spirit and determination and will be an asset to the team next year,” stated Coach McKain. The Royal Valley volleyball season ended with a disappointing 6-14 record. The record is mislead- ing in the respect that the panthers had many close games that went down to the wire, but Royal Valley didn’t come up with the win. When asked how she felt about the season, Coach Robinson replied, “I was disappointed be- cause we had the talent to do better than we did. We lost a number of seniors from the year before, but we had good people to fill in the gaps.” Next year will be a tough year for Panther vol- leyball. Royal Valley is joining the Big Seven league since the Jefferson League is being dis- banded. The Panthers will be facing some out- standing volleyball competition in the years to come. Cross-Country. The very words set off many thoughts in my mind. I’ve had the privilege of being a member of the Royal Valley Cross-Country team for the past three years, and now that I think back, I wouldn’t trade those years for anything in the world. Of course, when most people think of cross-country, they think of running and running ’till you can’t walk, and then they shudder. There is a lot of work in Cross-Country, and all the runners will tell you this., But the work, the sweat, and all the sacrifices pay off when you finally get a winning team. The winning and the fun — not the pain — is what I remember most and will cherish the rest of my life. Every person wants to be a winner, and knowing the quality, the dedication and the closeness of our runners, I knew we would have winning teams. When we finally came out on top of all the rest, I was very proud to have been a part of the fine people who made up our team. Although I know not all runners on our team will agree with me, I’ve always felt there was a great friendship and closeness between our runners and our coach. This friendship is what makes me love the sport of Cross-Country. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the people who have made up our teams throughout the years, and the coach, who kept us all together, for giving me all of the memories that I know I will keep forever. Kirk Hunter Senior I really enjoyed running. You get a little high in yourself during a race when you are almost done and heading toward the finish line with all of those people screaming for you to finish. You also get a feeling of self-satisfaction when you’ve finished the race and you know you have done your best. Will Wabaunsee 85 Senior . They brought home three major championships and they tied for first place in the 3-A state meet. The winner was decided by the sixth man on each team, so Royal Valley was dropped to second. When asked his opinion of the season, Coach Cannon replied, “We had what I would call a ‘tra- ditional’ Royal Valley season. We started the sea- son somewhat behind other teams, but after the Quad State meet at Maryville, Mo., we steadily improved from meet to meet until we peaked at the Regional meet.” Coach Cannon attributed the winning season to the leadership shown by the seniors. The team advanced further in post-season play than any other team in the school’s history. Several team marks fell to the 1981-82 squad, one of which was the best defensive teams in the history of Royal Valley High School. Highlights of the year ranged from the sub-state run- ner-up plaque, presented to the Panthers after a hard fought game with the Silver Lake Eagles, to the First winning season posted since the 1974-75 season. Several individual records were established. Warren Fink became the school’s leading scorer with 822 points throughout his three year career. He also led the team scoring for the second consecutive year and set the single season record with 387 points in the 1981-82 season. Mikel Ward set a school record for blocked shots with 52 rejections in one season. Darrin Stithem, a defensive specialist, set the school record for recoveries, steals, and interceptions with 60 over the course of the season. Coach. Ken Cannon said. “I have always tried to live by Emerson’s quo_te — ‘Hitch your wagon to a star. One can see in those six little words the summary of human achievement, and an everlasting inspiration to the future races of men. In my opinion, the 1981-82 Royal Valley team “hitched their wagons to a star” and the castles they had built in the air had, by the end of the season, solid foundations built under those castles which had seemed like dreams a few short months be- fore. ’ L-R: Coach Cannon, Warren Fink, Paul Stuke, Fred Beat (manager), Greg Pruett (manager), Paul Barger, Donnie Smith, Ryan Tarwater, Doug Bergman, Roger Catron, Steve Donahue, Mikel Ward, Keith Kelly, Darren Stithem, Mike Blazic, Bruce Everhart, Charlie Hamlin, Will Wabaunsee (manager), Jeff DeBusk, Keith Zachariasen, D.J. Girls Track When one speaks of the RVHS Girls’ Track team, the old adage, “It’s quality — not quantity” holds true. The girls had a pretty good season, having 3 individuals medal at State. “I think it was great!” commented Coach Coburn. “Two med- alists will be coming back and will be a strong basis for next year.” “A big disappointment was the lack of upper- classmen. We didn’t have the depth although we did have some good performances.
