The varsity team under the direction of Mr. Si- mecka, started out slow but built up momentum and went on to finish with a 4-5 record which tied them for 3rd place with Jeff West in the Jefferson League. The 78-79 team also beat the Valley Falls Dragons for the first time. The Panthers stopped a 2 year losing streak by beating J.C.N. and then going on to win their next 3 games. Four players made all league. They were Matt Bums named offen- sive guard and defensive nose guard, Mark Adame named defen- sive end, and Leslie Shuckahosee named all league back. Leslie also received an Honorable Mention in the 3A State team. Charlie Zweifel made 2nd team all league tackle. The performance of these people working with the rest of the team made it a football year to remem- ber. The Royal Valley JV team also put on a great performance this year with the help of Coach Wall, Coach Schaefer, and Coach Branda. The JV team finished with a 4-2-1-re- cord . Jackson Heights was the only team to beat the Panthers, even though they were given a run for their money. Coach Wall said this is the best year I've had since I've been coaching the JV. All the coaches feel this year's team has done well and will have a golden future. JV AND FRESHMEN Back RowL-R: A. Rolfe, W. Fink, J. Collins, S. Steele, L. Shenk, D. Chance, D. Figgs, D. Coale, R. Mr. Wayne Wahlmeier coached the girls to a win-loss re- cord of 2-6. This was the first year for a freshman volleyball team. They had a win-loss record of 3 - 1. The team consisted of 23 players who worked hard throughout the season. Two ofourR.V. players, J. Beat and P. Novak, made the Second Team All- League. n 5-L. Stallbaumer, 23-T. Ehrhart, 13-K. Holcomb, K. Ribelin Front Row: B. Lambrecht, K. Kelly, W. Fink, E. Coleman, R. Mitchell Running Running two miles is not very appealing to most people, but nine R.V. guys found the determination to go out for Cross Country. This year's team consisted of four Seniors, two Soph- omores, and three Freshmen. Although they will be losing four of their run- ners, the future years look promis- ing. The guys had an excellent year, placing first in four meets, second in two and in the Re - gional, third in one meet, and fifth in the State. VARSITY Back Row L-R: Coach Gish, L. Stallbaumer, T. Stithem, K. Kelly, K. Barr, K. Figgs, J. Beat, Coach Wahlmeier. Front Row L-R: P. Novak, M. Johnson, J. Wells. Basketball The winter of 1979 was cold and the Panther girls also had a cold year shooting. The panthers shot 27.49. from the field. But with the senior leadership of Karen Kelly, Janet Beat, Patti Novak and Janetta Wells, the Panthers finished the season with 9 wins and 11 losses. Of the 11 losses more than half were to State ranked teams. Helping the seniors were Juniors: Karen Barr, Mary Johnson, and Kristine Figgs, Sophomores: Terri Stithem and Lori Stallbaumer. JUNIOR VARSITY Back Row L-R: Coach Wahlmeier, K. Rooney, S. Christian, T. Holcomb, S. Montgomery, D. Simpson, K. Eck, L. Zule, M. Adame. Front Row L to R: K. Parrett, L. Kern, K. Wege, D. Sims, M. Nicol, A. Beat, R. Pruett. Basketball The Junior Varsity showed poten- tial for great basketball in the fu- ture . Made up of all Sophomores, the JV finished 10-2, including first place in the first JV tournament for some time at Royal Valley. The Freshmen girls struggled at the first part of the season, but fin- ished strong. The girls won first, place at the Freshmen tournament at RV and third place at the tour- nament at Jackson Heights. The girls finished the season 7-5. VARSITY Back Row L-R: Coach Cannon, R. Kern, W. Basketball 1978-79 The outcome of this year's bas- ketball season may not have been a victorious one. But as Coach Ken Cannon pointed out, there might have been only four games won this year, but there were only a total of six games won in the past three years. Some of the highlights of the year were the CrossRoads classic at Belleville. Coach said, 1' It was a very positive experience even though we didn't do well.'' Coach Cannon also felt that Kevin Par- re tt's performance against Pleasant Ridge and Jeff. North were out- standing . Kevin set a single game rebounding record with 22, and set the single game scoring mark with 31. Beating Sabetha at the end of the season was also a definite high- light. ' 'The Panthers dropped eight games this season by twelve points or less. Those games were games that a basketball team with more experience and confidence probably would have won,'' commented Coach Cannon. The Royal Valley Panthers varsity finished the 1978- 79 campaign with a 4-16 record. Coach Cannon along with the rest of the RV supporters are looking for- ward to a winning season next year. The JV also put on a promising performance for the year. At the Royal Valley JV tournament, they took third place. The Junior Pan- thers finished the year with a 6-7 record. The RV Freshmen looked very promising also, finishing with an 11-2 record and bringing home two trophies. With an entirely new coaching staff and the way these three teams played as a whole, the season was one to remember. TRACK Back Row L-R: E. Coleman, K. Hunter, J. Collins, D. Figgs, B. Cox, W. The boys took first at the Perry Relays by a wide margin of points. It was the first time in Royal Valley history that this had been done. There were several records set this year. They included: the 2-mile relay team with C. Zweifel, K. Ribelin, S. Webb, and R. Mitchell, with a time of 8:38.5; the 440-relay team with K. Parrett, R. Finson, D. Anderson, and C. Hamlin with a time of 46.28; high jump- K. Parrett, 5' 10 ; shot put- M. Bums, 48' lO' i ; pole vault - K. Ribelin, 10'; and in- termediate hurdles- D. Anderson, 44.6. There were 3 members of the team that went to state. M. Bums went for shot put, R. Mitchell for the 2-mile, and D. Anderson for long jump. M. Bums received 5th and R. Mitchell received 7th at the state meet. Coach Si- mecka said, I thought the season as a whole went well. Everyone worked hard and did as well as expected.1' GIRLS TRACK Front row: Coach Wall, Janetta Wells, Lisa Ehrhart, Karen Kelly, Coach Simecka. Second row: Mariane Nicol, Kristine Figgs. Third row: Tammy Holcomb, Lori Stallbaumer, Rhonda Pruett. Fourth row: Toni Owensby, Judy Craig. A Track 1978-79 With only 12 girls out for track this year, the RV girls team did excep- tionally well. After taking fourth at the league meet, three of the girls went on to state. They were: Lesa Zule for the 100 yard dash, Lesa Ehr- hart for the two mile, and Kris Figgs for the 220 yard hurdles and long jump. Lesa Zule broke the old high jump record with a jump of 5'1 , and Lesa Ehrhart set new mile and two mile records with times of 6:08 and 13:15 respectively. Coach Si- mecka did an excellent job of coaching both the boys and girls teams, and with Coach Wall assist- ing , the girls came out on top. Their attendants were Karen Kelly, Charlie Zweifel, Kim Kent and Leslie Shuckahosee. Janet and Wayne were crowned during the halftime ceremonies of the Royal Valley vs. McClouth game. The Panthers were defeated 34 to 6 by the Bulldogs. The Crown Bearers were Merideth Riley and Dana Rausch. They were escorted by our reigning Queen Lesa Deer. The theme for this year's Homecoming was 1 'Best of My Love.'' The student body and their guests boogied to the beat of '' Image.'' The night before Homecoming there was a Snake Dance, pep rally and weiner roast held to help raise school spirit. Love is in the air The 1979 King and Queen of Courts was filled with surprises. First, the name was changed to Snowball. Also, the dance was held on a Saturday night in the commons area, because the gym was being used to host the Royal Valley Jr. Varsity Invita- tional Basketball Tournament. School was canceled that day due to a snowstorm, but the game was still sched- uled. The theme Love is in the Air was submitted by Melanie Rolfe. The atmo- sphere of the commons was totally changed by all the decorations that were created by the Kayettes and FHA members Saturday morning. Usually, there are only 8 candidates, but this year there were 10 because of a tie in the voting. They were Kim Wege, Rick Finson, Patti Novak, Donald Martin, Gena Walrod, Wayne Fink, Janetta Wells, Fred Eigenman, Jerri Bausch, and Craig Webb. Craig Webb and Jerri Bausch were crowned King and Queen during half-time of the basketball game with Valley Falls. The girls were defeated by a score of 33-43 and Qie boys lost 40-71. Len Becker, Disc-Jockey for the dance, provided a light show for the dancers. SPRING CONCERT 44 Spring Concert was a real success this year as it drew the largest crowd ever. Mixed Chorus and Suing Choir started off the concert by singing several songs, in- cluding the numbers they received a 2 rating on at state. Those numbers were, ' 'With A Voice of Sing- ing' ', ' 'Now is the Month of May'', and ' 'Confite- mini Domino''. Marguerite Hood received the award for outstanding senior. It was a special concert for Royal Valley Panther Band fans as well as the band itself because it was Mrs. Baker's last performance. The band played ' 'Coat of Arms'' and ' 'Overture Jubiloso'', the two numbers that they received I ratings on at State Contest. They performed several skits with various comical surprises added. Fred Eigenman received the band award for most outstanding senior. 45 DINNER - THE A TER 46 The Royal Valley Players (Mrs. DeGraw's 6th Hour Speech and Drama class), and the FHA turned the commons into a dinner theater on May 11. The players performed a musical melodrama, The Labors of Love. Bob Bostrom accompanied on the piano as they performed the play without a snag. After the play, the au- dience roared at the olio's, old vaudeville routines. The RV Players presented the play during the afternoon to the Hoyt 6th Grade, then to the community during the evening. The FHA decorated the commons so that it looked like an Italian Restaurant, complete with red checked tablecloths and wine bottle candles. The meal served consisted of la - sagna, salad, and garlic bread. This was the first time RV had a musical as w ell as a din- ner theater. The capacity crowd left having been enter- tained by Mrs. DeGraw's creative and talented students. Labors of Love 47 ATHLETIC BANQUET Athletic Banquet The Athletic Banquet was held in the commons area on May 8th. There was a pot luck dinner, with homemade noodles, pies, cakes and ice cream. The guest speaker was Brad Sanders, from K.U. He played on the Jayhawks basketball team. Each of the coaches made a speech and then gave awards to the people who lettered and recognition to those who didn't. Mr. Cannon had a speech for every cross country' runner and every basketball player. 48 49 PROM “79” 50 I ISH rr1'! SHARING THE NIGHT TOGETHER The day was Saturday, April 28. The place was the Holiday Inn downtown, Santa Fe Room in Topeka. The time was 8:30 - 12:30. What was happening? The Royal Valley Junior G Senior Prom was taking place. The Juniors, Seniors, and their dates danced to the music of limousine. The theme of prom was, ' 'Sharing the Night Together''. The room was decorated in blue and silver. Everyone received a glass at the door, with the prom theme printed on it. Couples had their pictures taken by Brent's photography. 51 SENIOR SKIP World's of Fun The day started off hazy and gloomy, people weren't quite awake at 5:30 a.m. when the bus left for the Han- over Pancake House in Topeka. As the bus pulled into the parking lot, the class of 1979 gradually awakened to the smell of pancakes, eggs and bacon. They ordered such breakfasts as steak and eggs, french pancakes, omelets, G many other appetizing dishes. Slowly, they loaded themselves back onto the bus with full stomachs and headed for Kansas City to start their day at World's of Fun. The day turned out to be warm and sun- ny. World's of Fun wasn't crowded and students and sponsors enjoyed almost all of the rides. As the bus was pulling out of Kansas City, it started to rain and kept on raining until the bus reached the Pizza Hut in Topeka. Nearly everyone who went would agree that the day was fun, and it was a time they would long remember. 54 ORGANIZATIONS BAND Back row standing L-R: J. Kincaid, K. Figgs, D. Bums, C. Hood, F. Kincaid, L. Coale, T. Preston, R. Fitzgerald, R. Durham, M. Johnson, B. Fox, T. Pfeffer, Mrs. DeGraw; Crazy Crazy ... When you get a number of talented people together, you can only describe Speech and Drama as one crazy event after another. The Speech area of the class is dedicated to Foren- sics, which consists of Dramatic Interpretation, Im- provised Duet acting, Extempt, Oratory, Prose, Poet- ry, and a number of prepared speeches. Contests are fun-filled, busy days that could drive a person crazy. Dedication is mandatory for this class. After contests and putting on plays for a number of months, it takes a great deal of fortitude to understand sharp tempers, and volatile feelings. But the end results — lasting re - lationships, sweet memories, and over 18 medals, are worth every moment of hard work. 72 FACULTY During the 1978-79 school year the Yearbook Staff thought we would get a few of the teachers opinions on the following ques- tions. (1) What was your reason for becoming a teacher? Mr. Simecka-1 wanted to stay active in sports and coaching was a good way to do it. . (2) The most important thing you've learned from your teach- ing experience? Mr. Wall-I've learned how adaptive most people can be and that a majority of the students still get the most they can out of school, while an unfortunate few try to get out of school. (3) What was your most memorable experience this year? Mr. Crawford-When my shop room flooded because of pipes breaking. Mrs. Harvey-The juniors running the concession stand. (4) What was your reason for teaching your subject? Mr. Branda- Because social science deals with human beings and 1 like the study of people and it beats English. (5) When you were little did you know you wanted to be a teacher? Mrs. DeGraw-Before junior high 1 wanted to write the great American novel, but then I decided to be a teacher. The high school was in use from 6:00 in the morning until 10:00 p.m. nearly every day. On September 15, 280 students were enrolled at RV. We had only around _ ______ 230 lockers. Because of the large enrollment, we had to have two lunch shifts with the Hoyt Grade School children funneled through in between. The Royal Valley gym saw constant use throughout the year. Basketball especially kept the gym occupied as girls arrived for practice early before school, the Jr. High filled it at 3:30, and the high school boys' team worked out in the evenings. Events of every description packed the school calendar. Sock hops followed almost every home varsity game 1st semester. Concerts, talent shows, and banquets made every month fly. The school hosted the Jr. Varsity Basketball Tournament and an invitational speech festival. Honors came to the school as FFA won the International Homesite Judging competition, music students reaped 1st ratings at state, and cross-country placed 5th in the state. Teachers will remember the late shuttle buses which prompted a change to 3 minutes between classes instead of 5 the last 9 weeks so that time could be added to 1st hour to get the shuttle bus students to school on time. Students will remember struggling to squeeze in time for homework while involved with the whirl of constant school activities. Parents will remember facing the question of enlarging the high school. The bond issue, which prompted school-community meetings, was eventually defeated. We feel that RV ended the year with more successes than failures. We worked hard at times, goofed off at times, learned, had problems, grew, hated and loved. The memories of the year will remain. We hope this book will help you to remember the good times, and learn from the bad. I i 0 J Illlllj ' I l ll luvvSy UmuxxV wN M'M '3kM ,• ,■£ | J ,’ _ . _. . TO THE END The yearbook staff began the year by selling more ads than ever before and by selling shirts to the school, band, and seniors. They raised the price of the book to $8 because of inflation and need for extra pages. They increased the pages from 104 to 116, purchased a new camera, or- dered a better cover, arranged for Mr. Bostrom to take an aerial picture of the school, and paid an extra quarter per book to have the cover in silver. The main goals of the staff were to improve the quality of the pictures, improve page design, and increase copy so that the yearbook could be an accurate, fairly complete record of what went on during the year. The staff greatly appreciates the support of the businesses and families who bought ads in the yearbook. We would also like to thank Gery Kauffman, our sales representative from Josten's, Robert Muttel from Wichers, and Robert Bostrom for his constant help with photography. Above all we thank the students, faculty', and administration at Royal Valley who provided the story for the book.
