Playing or iust watching, nearly everyone was interested in the progress of each team and in the athletes of whom they were composed. of all the sports, football and basketball were probably the most popular with the spectators who had plenty to frazzle their nerves with such opponents as Birmingham and Berkley. Record-smashing became a habit for the swim- ming team which plowed its way to fourth place in the BCL League and to second place in the State Meet at Ann Arbor, Tennis, cross-country, baseball, golf, and track, though not so widely attended or publicized, were still important as their records show. Sports, we see as we look back, gave us many of the more exciting and pleasurable memories of school life, despite a few sprained muscles and raw throats from cheering. we -nl' tl v 4 I 4 4 'f J' 'P .5-. qw, M. . x, I X ,Q E? Previous to this the squad had suf- fered their only losses, coming at the hands of Grosse Pointe and Fordson. Within the school orchestra there are several string ensembles. Concert mistress and student conductor is Marlene Buckner. German exchange student, H a r r i et Meier, plays the flute with the orchestra. She has furnished the group with many interesting facts on music in Germany. , X Mr. Henry A. Garen is RODHS orchestra. TIME OUT FOR GINGER The Atwas Club presentation, Time Out for Ginger, was held in the high school auditorium No- vember l8-l9. lt was produced and directed by Miss Marilyn Bre- claw and student director Bette Dacey. The play centers about the household of Howard Carol fGreg Huntl which is turned topsy-turvy when his daughter, Ginger Uoyce BOQQL manages to make the school football team. Mr. Carol portrays the typical, proud father of a football player. With his raccoon coat and swing- ing a piece of the goal post, he does an excellent job of telling the play his daughter made. Mrs. Carol CSandy DeMerchantl is a very patient and understanding mother, but at the end of the play she has only one thing to say, Lets have a son - Huh? . 1 Mitch Portnoy has his arms full with his two wives Deanna Sist and Pat Zaucha while Beth Hagadone, Delores Banl-lala Ernie Mlsch Jean Laberge and Sue Dehart look on BLITHE SPIRIT Blithe Spirit, the three act play written by Noel Coward, was put on in the auditorium April 20-21. Mitch Portnoy, the lead, play- ed Charles. Dr. Bradman was portrayed by Ernie Misch. Others in the cast were Beth Hagadone as Edith, Pat Zaucha as Ruth, Delores Van Hala as Mrs. Bradman, Jean Laberge as Madame Arcati, and Deanna Sist as Elvira. Miss Marilyn Breclaw was the director, Student director was Sue Dehart. The play was about a ghost who returned to haunt her hus- band, and who could only be seen by one person, Charles. The entire play was a lot of fun to put on and it brought a lot of laughs from the audience. Making up the af- firmative team this year were Judy Meyer and Robert Lee. Joan Coulton and Brock Cole composed the negative team. Judy and Joan had each had two years experience on the debating team. Bob was on the reserve team last year, while this is Brock's first year as a de- bater, Their record in the state league was 8-O, Metropolitan, 4-4, and their tournament was l-I. Next year Royal Oak will be in need of a completely new team, as all four of this year's are graduating. Two awards are given each year by the Detroit Free Press if the team qualifies. To be eligi- ble for an award, the team must be in the first 65 out of 335 tearns. Arguing a point with Mr. Mead, debate coach, is Joan Coulton and Brock Cole the negative faction of the debate team. The debate team consists of L-R, Brock Cole, Joan Coulton, negative, Judy Meyer, Robert Lee, affirmative, and Coach Mr. Mead, 52 ,L ,gin-we Acorn Staff-What kind of work is this, editors? Harriet Meier, the blond, blue-eyed exchange student, was liked by everyone. She shared many experiences with us concerning life in her home country. Versatile Harriet spent seven years in Portu- gal, where she learned to speak Portuguese fluently, She also speaks English, French, and Latin. Harriet went to Royal Oak High School not only to learn, but also to contribute. She did this by playing the recorder and the flute in the school orchestra. ln September, she will return to Germany to finish her schooling and begin her preparation for a teaching career. Good luck to a swell girl who will always re- main a pleasant memory to our senior class. Hedda Schulz, unlike Harriet, was in the United States for a year visiting her American pen pal. Two years of correspondence led to her dreamed of trip to America. She received her correspondent's name through her class. in Germany. Hedda has many hobbies including swim- ming, drawing, and playing various musical instruments, When she returns to Germany, Hedda will embark on an interior decorating career. With her she will take many American thoughts and memories. Good luck, from the 1956 graduates, to a girl who has meant much to our senior year. 80 Harriet Meier PRESIDENT CLASS OFFICERS JANUARY, 1956 ,. , If '?'3'y'f S my Q, Maia mom? 6.42511 W -.Aswf 7e?:Al4'RD .Avvffwf VICE PRESIDENT SECRETARY TREASURER Wi 81 SALUTATORIAN 6:A5,,,,QZ-,- gunz, dal?
