aUliMSif We, the seniors of the class of 19E 2, wish to dedicate this yearbook to all the students that we are leaving be- hind. Only through their help could we have obtained recognition as an outstanding school in sports, education and social activities. The underclassmen have co-operated with the seniors very nicely this past year. Everyone participated in the freshman initiation with a good spirit. Also in all our extra school activities, such as clubs, basketball teams, debating, and many others, we have all worked together. We hope that the underclassmen will strive as we have to uphold the traditions and morals of our school and also strive to make our school one of which we will be proud in the future. 3 Lester N. Parker Supervising Principal Mr. Parker, our supervising principal, has been with us now for three years. During this time our school has been run very smooth- ly and we have had many improvements. Under the supervision of Mr. Parker our school is conducted in a very orderly manner. Mr. Parker has instituted a testing program. This past year the freshmen and seniors have been given preference tests. These tests help to determine the likes and dislikes of the students and help them to choose the right vocation. It also helps the freshmen to select the right courses for the remaining three years in high school. One of our achievements this past year was the acquiring of a first class commission for our school. This rating was very pleasing to the school and community. It signifies the progress the school is making along the line of education. Since there are very few township schools that have a first class commission we are very proud of it and hope it will always be retained at Royal Center. 5 Mr. Parker Supervising Principal Mr. Brown Basketball Coach Physical Education Mrs. Culp Mr. Dorton Commercial Industrial Arts Mrs. Kistler Speech English Mr. Socin Band Chorus Mrs. Briggs Mr. Conrad Home Economics Biology Agriculture Mrs. Ellis Mr. Newell Commercial Mathematics Physical Education Miss Tincher Art English Mr. Baker Social Studies Mr. McCord Science Mathematics Miss Megenity Latin Library-English Mr. Sparks Biology Driver’s Training 6 Senior One day in the spring of the year nineteen hundred and fifty-two as I was walking down a path in a woods near Royal Center, I overheard two birds talk- ing. As it was quite a shock to me to hear birds talking, I paused to listen. It seemed that these two birds were a red bird and a blue bird who were mem- bers of the class at Royal Center High School that was about to be graduated, and they were reminiscing about their past school days. The longer I listened the more engrossed I became in the story which I will relate to you. It seems that on a certain September morning in 19U0, twenty-three little birds winged their way to the entrance of the Royal Center Grade School. It was here that they received the nicknames of red birds and blue birds. Of the twenty-three who started in the first grade only eight remained, to be joined by others from other flocks. The eight are: Rosabelle Everman, Marjean Hipes, Faithe Bird, who flew away but returned in the ninth grade, Wayne Berkshire, Everett Layer, Ralph Schroder, Bill Weaver and Ed Smith. Many things happened to these nestlings during this first year that they will long remember. They gained much experience in everything from handling animals (from their pet show) to modes of travel (from their cardboard box train.) This was a wonderful year for everyone, and all too soon they were forced to leave this new found paradise of learning and to continue on their way in search of more knowledge. On the red birds and blue birds journeyed into the second grade. They were joined by one bird from another flock. This bird was Joan Adams. The nest- lings found school a little harder this year, but they made new friends and settled down to start learning the three R's. The red and blue birds next winged their way into the third grade. They began learning the fundamentals of putting on a play in which the girls and boys were dressed in crepe-paper costumes. From there they went into the fourth grade. This year they were joined by Bill Kraning and Barbara Hoffman. On they flew into the fifth grade. They were joined this year by Helen Simpson. Little by little the birds were learning the power of a firm hand, as they were taught a lesson on the bad effects of paper-wad throwing. As the red birds and blue birds journeyed into the sixth grade, they were joined by Deloris Arion who migrated from Logansport. Two members of our class journeyed to Logansport to participate in the spelling contest. The class was very happy when they both placed first. In the seventh grade ten more joined the flock from White County which greatly increased the number of the class. The names of those migrating from White County are: Marjorie Blount, Mildred Collins, Nona Musall, Deloras Ploss, Dolores Roth, Pat Swayze, Faye Westerhouse, Jean Baker, Jerry Cosgray and Maurice McKinney. A few were picked to patrol the streets and stairs for the safety of others. The patrol boys were presented with raincoats and hats and also lieutenant and captain badges which are still in use. 8 They spent eight years as nestlings gaining further instructior laboring hard, taking time out only for the Christmas program and other holidays. Thelma Harrison joined us this year. They enjoyed the services of a new record player for which they had worked in the last part of the seventh grade. At last they were finally ready to leave their home nest and start on bigger flights. In the freshman year they were joined by a flock from Jefferson Township. They were: Betty Berry, Pat Nethercutt, Inland Patty, Ruth Smith, Glen Sell, Bill Richards, Mattie Sanson, Stanley Kraay, and Byron Tribbett. Oakley Hatch from Ohio and Duana Pressler from Plymouth joined the flock. During the fresh- man year they learned how dominating upperclassmen, who made them wear jeans wrong side out, backwards, ribbons in their hair and many other silly things, can be. They really enjoyed the initiations as much as the upperclassmen en- joyed watching them. In the sophomore year they were joined by birds from Noble Township. They were: Eileen Zimmerman, Bea Ross, Keith Sanders, Kelly Frushour, Glen Snyder, Burl Fry, Vera Cook, Sandra Forgy, Melba Buzbee, Norma Barr, Jane Love, Jim Davidson, Bill Neher. Martin Snider joined us from Burlington. During the sophomore year some of the Noble birds and a few others were initiated into different clubs by having to wear feed sacks, onions around their necks, etc. Some of the birds were members of debating teams, some on the basketball and baseball team, some played in the band, and some of them were content just to fly around school getting into mischief. In the junior year the red and blue birds were busy selling concessions and planning for the prom. They were joined this year by Trudy Morris. A few were selected to appear in the play, The Boarding House Reach , which was a great success. In April the juniors and seniors, with their guests, journeyed to Purdue to enjoy a very lovely prom. The next year the birds were seniors and very grown up, I must add. They were joined by Pat Morehouse. They initiated the freshman in October. In the spring the senior play was given, and a little later the juniors and seniors flew to Purdue where a very lovely prom was again held. A trial flight into the; world was taken when the seniors went on their trip. The biggest moment of all, however, was at commencement when the birds were given their dipolmas. At this point the two birds, who had been so engrossed in their conversation that they hadn't even noticed me, looked down and discovered me standing there. As soon as they saw me they quickly flew away and that was the last I ever saw of them. I don't know what became of the birds I saw or the birds they talked about, but I am sure that many great things happened to them and that they made many great accomplishments which made the world in which we live a little better. 9 JOAN ADAMS School Paper - 3,1 ; Chorus - 1,2.1 ; SSS - 1,2; GAA - 1,2,3,1 ; Jr. Play; Annual - 1 ; Bulldog Boosters - l j Librarian -3. The first organization was formed in 1926 to reward individual, achievement and to encourage individual initiative in such work as high school journalism, creative writing and allied fields. Last year there were nine charter members in the organization. They are Jean Baker, Thelma Harrison, Jane Love, Beatrice Ross, Marjean Hipes, Dolores Roth, Eileen Zimmerman, Heloris Arion, and Norma Barr. The sponsors of this society are Mr. Brown and Mr. Newell. We are proud of the society and hope to have several new members in the following years. 28 IS) 0 Vegetable Judging Team The Royal Center High School’s Vegetable Judging Team placed tenth among eighty teams who participated in the state wide vegetable judging contest held recently a - Purdue. They scored 1386 points compared to the winners 1 23 points. Wayne Berkshire was the outstanding indi- vidual on the team scoring li93 points of a possible 530 to rank eighth from a total of 260 individuals who parti- cipated. Other members of the high ranking team were Bill Kraning Itli7 and Glen Sells Wj6 points. Royal Center's second team scored 1223 points. Oakley Hatch was first with U16, Jerry Cosgray Ij20, and Jack Babb 357 points. The preparation for this contest was under the supervision of Mr. Conrad. Livestock Judging Team The members of the Royal Center Livestock Judging team are Stanley Kraay, Bob Burley, Jerry Cosgray, and Kelly Frushour. This team is coached by Mr. Conrad, agricul- ture teacher at Royal Center. The team placed first in the Cass County Livestock Judging Contest held in early April. The team then ad- vanced to the district contest and placed among the top third which entitled them to compete with teams from all over the state at the li—H Club Roundup at Purdue. The major event of the year was the contest at the Indiana State Fair. From the twenty teams participating the team won second place. On individual scoring. Bob Burley was third highest in the state and Stanley Kraay seventh. On October 1st the team attended the Atlantic Rural Exposition held at Richmond, Virginia. At this contest they placed third. Nath. Contestants On Saturday, March 31 19 1, Paul Tribbett,Ann Zimmer, Nelson Weaver, and Dorothy Hardy represented Royal Center at the Regional Math Contest held at Peru, Indiana. Ann and Paul took part in the geometry contest and Dorothy and Nelson in the algebra. Dorothy took first place in the contest and Nelson took fourth. Those contestants who ranked in the upper h0% from all the regionals were in- vited to go to the state contest at Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana, on Saturday, April 28. Nelson and Dorothy went to this contest and they both ranked in the upper half of the contestants participating. Mr. Newell, who is the mathematics teacher, accompanied the group to both contests. Debate Teams Debating has grown to be of great importance in our school this year. Four of the members of the Debate Club participated in a speech tournament held at Indiana State Teachers College, Terre Haute on January 2£ and 26. They were Jim Moser and Bob Burley, the affirmative team and Ann Zimmer and Loa Fry, the negative team. The affirma- tive team defeated Elwood and the negative team defeated New Castle and Howe Military Academy. The affirmative team also debated Delphi before a P. T. A. meeting and lost by a very close margin. The teams are coached by Mrs. Kistler. Legislative Participants On November 30 and December 1, two Senators and two Representatives from the Royal Center School attended the 9th Annual Legislative Assembly at Purdue University. This Legislative Assembly is held for the purpose of creating more interest in the legislative proceedings of our State. It also helps the high school students to understand bills and gives them a chance for educational discussions. 3yron Tribbett was the Senator with Norma Barr as al- ternate and Dorothy Hardy was the Representative with Bob Burley, alternate. They were supervised and accompanied by Mr. Baker. Music Contestants On the ninth day of February in 1951, several members of the Royal Center Band participated in the Solo and Ensemble Contest which was held at Kokomo. Those receiving honors were Jean Hardy, Sue Harrison and Sharon Million who placed first playing a cornet trio. Arnold Knebel and Jerry Kistler played trombone solos, Jerry placing first and Arnold second. Thelma Harrison was also placed first playing a sousaphone solo. George Raderstorf and Phyllis Lind took second place playing a clarinet duet. Dorothy Hardy and El Raye Shafer also played a clarinet duet and placed second. Mr. Socin is the director of the Royal Center Band. Coach Russell Brown Mr. Russell M. Brown was born September 18, 1918,on a farm in Hancock Coun- ty, near Fortville which is twenty five miles east of Indianapolis. He attended high school at Peru, college at Ball State and one year of summer school at Indiana University. He is married and has one boy, Jimmie, seven years old. He has taught eleven years. Among those were three years at Twelve Mile and one year at Eastern High School, Greentown, Indiana. 'While at Twelve Mile, his basketball team won the county tournament in 1950. This year, as the coach at Royal Center, Mr. Brown has organized several extra sports activities. We have a Cross Country team for the first time and also intramurals at the noon hours have been planned for the boys. These intra- murals furnish activity for the noon hours and also help to develop material for a better basketball team. Mr. Brown has a very good opinion of our school. His likes are the good building and well-mannered student body. In addition to managing sports he has put forth a lot of effort toward putting a school paper in every student's home. 33 A Team B Team 34 Freshman Team Softball Team 35 $am Cross-Country Team ■ Track Team 36 Student Council Mr a. The Senior Class 54 J- rop The year 2021 was approaching, marking my twentieth year in heaven, and not yet had I met one of my former classmates of the year 1952. I came to the conclusion that I was the only early retiring member of my class. I was really becoming quite lonely, although I had made many new acquaintances. I decided I must do something about this, so I went to St. John asking him if I could return to earth in spirit. He was willing to grant me permission to do this, but suggested instead that I go to the watch tower where I could look down on all ny friends. This I did at once 1 At the watch tower I found three huge books, giving the expected arrival of every person coming to heaven. I promptly looked through them all to find if any of my classmates would be coming soon to join me. I found three coming within one year: Pat Nethercutt Williams, Marjorie Blunt Fultz, and Pat Swayze Julian. I began planning for their arrival, for there was much work to be done. I found nyself busy getting their places liveable and planning the things we could do together when they arrived. Pat Julian came first, leaving behind her adorable husband, Maurice, and three sons and daughters. The first thing she said when she saw me was, Thelma Harrison, how did you get here?” She proceeded to tell me that she had been a very well known duet singer in the Metropolitan Opera with Margaret Truman. Pat Nethercutt Williams came next and then Marjorie Fultz. After getting acquainted again, we went to the watch tower where we could come in contact with the rest of our friends. As we approached, we noticed a little white-haired lady looking at the books, and Marjorie immediately recognized Faye Westerhouse. She said she had slipped into heaven unnoticed by us and decided also to go to the watch tower. Now our little group had grown to five, and we decided to do everything in our power to get all fifty-one graduates of 1952 into heaven, a task which we knew would be great. As we looked out of the tower toward earth, we immediately spotted Kelly Frushour in his New York office. He had made a fortune by writing the book. Why You Shouldn't Buy A Convertible. Also in New York was Stanley Kraay, who had become a prominent taxi driver. In school he had always been a reckless driver, so he was very good at dodging New York traffic. Next we saw Jane Love Nice on her farm, devoting her life to Maurice and their three widowed daughters. The adjoining farm was occupied by Betty Berry Good- rich, Jane's good friend, and Howard. Betty and Howard were leading a very successful life, as Howard was the owner of an automobile factory as well as their farm. Betty's health was failing rapidly, so we expected her arrival within a month. All of a sudden Pat Julian exclaimed, Look at Nona Musall I We all looked down onto earth where she was about to shoot herself, or so it appeared to us, but we were wrong. Nona was a dentist and known as no pain tooth extractor. Her method was to put a rifle in the patient's ear, pull the trigger, and their teeth would fly out without them even knowing it. She was about to remove her own teeth and the result-----well, we now had six in our group. 55 Not far away from them we saw Bill Neher and, sure enough, something had come of the secretarial training he had obtained in high school. He was secretary to the very successful, prominent, and ailing Bill Richards. Our eyes next focused on Norma Barr, who, even in her old age, was still a professor at Harvard University and giving Mr. Einstein some very stiff com- petition. Pat Williams1 eyes then came upon someone she couldn't quite distinquish, al- though she knew she had seen that face before. Pat Julian was the first to recognize the plump, old lady as Rosabella Everman James. She and Charlie still owned one of the finest gas stations in the world. Each customer is presented with a new car. Seeing Rosie, we inroediately looked for Deloris Arion, her close friend. We found her busy making pies in the farmhouse she and Keith Sanders now owned, and as her hobby she owns the Quick Results, Get Your Man charm school. Keith is still trying to teach her how to milk a cow and not having much suc- cess. Not far from them was Deloras Ploss Roth. Along with her beauty shop she had written a very famous book, Eat 'N B Slim. Into our view next came Faithe Bird and Ralph Schroder. Ralph had just won the World's Heavy-Weight Championship at the age of 87, and he gave all the credit to Faithe for her fine management ability. Ralph says she's the best manager he's ever had. Next we saw a very beautiful building in the large city of Royal Centre. The sign on the window read Ross Morris Designers . Evidently Bea and Trudy changed their art ability into dress designing. Even at the age of 88 Sandra Forgey was still their beautiful and charming model. Bea and Trudy were also housewives. Trudy and Leland now had a little girl, which they had adopted and named Tutty Fruity. As we were getting tired of straining our eyes at such a distance, we decided to retire for the day and resume our contact some other time. Five months on earth had passed away, and some of our good friends too, before our group gathered together again. We found we now had twenty in our group. Vera Cook and Burl Fry came as the result of a motorcycle accident. They mar- ried shortly after graduation in 19 2 and began riding in the local races. Vera was named Mrs. Speed Demon of the year 2QV-,. Glen Sell said he couldn't stand to find anymore oil on his farm, so he decided it was time for him to retire. He discovered his oil while digging a hole for a fence post. Now he says all his neighbors are putting up fences. Three of our classmates fascinated us the most, however? Everett Layer, that is President Layer, Ruth Smith, his clawing bodyguard, and Pat Morehouse. Pat had the Morehouse Greenhouse at the White House. She did a very good business there since congressmen die quite often. 56 Helen Simpson and Duana Pressler were still inseparable companions. They had owned an orange grove in Florida and every day you could have seen Duana standing on Helen’s shoulders picking the sweetest oranges this side of heaven. They said since they were so close, they Just came on to heaven. Wayne Berkshire had been a Royal Mounty in Canada. He said he was getting a little old for that kind of work, so he came to us. We also had a famous roller-skating trio from our class: Jean Baker, Mattie San3on, and Mildred Collins. They told us they gave performances until they were 85 years old. Joan Adams’ brains gave out, so that was the reason for her arrival. She had portrayed a walking encyclopedia in our Junior play in high school, and she kept that for her life work. She gave out facts and statistics at the White House. Melba Buzbee had always loved horses, and last week (in the year 2021) she had the winning horse in the Kentucky Derby. This was too much for her weak old heart. After talking further with them, we decided that it was certainly time for the rest of our classmates on earth to retire, for they were all getting well into their old age. Things, so far, had run very smoothly, for nobocfy had had any trouble getting past St. Peter at the gate. There is always a bad break in everything, how- ever, and ours came with Dolores Roth. We all remembered Dolores as a mischievous girl back in 1952 and we knew that even in her old age, she probably hadn’t changed. We were right I She cer- tainly hadn't I While awaiting her arrival, we hoped she wouldn't try anything on St. Peter, but to our great dismay she did. To make things worse, she brought with her four old cronies: Leland Patty, Oakley Hatch, Jim Davidson, and Jerry Cosgray, who always thought it great fun to play tricks., too. Jerry came Just at this time for he had finally won an argument with Mr. Baker. The self-confidence he gained from this most impossible feat was Just too much for him. They decided to make life miserable for St. Peter until he let them into heaven. They did all sorts of things to aggravate him, but worst of all they tried to climb the gate I They stood on each other's shoulders first, but when this didn't work, they tried to climb individually. St. Peter, seeing this, finally decided that the best thing to do was Just to let them in. Things settled back into their normal state afterwards, but since that time those five have been called the heavenly pranksters. We hoped we wouldn't have anymore trouble, and for awhile we didn't. Bill Kraning, who said he didn't think he'd ever make it, came to heaven just one month after the heavenly pranksters. He took over his father's mink farm, and his wife was always in fashion with mink. MarJean Hipes came next, and we couldn't believe our ears when she said she had been a door to door saleswoman! Certainly this wasn't the quiet girl we knew in school. 57 Barbara Hofftnan's dead business got the best of her. You see, she was a famed mortician in Chicago. Barbara, Byron Tribbett, and Bill Weaver all worked to- gether. Byron was the doctor, Bill was the preacher, and Barbara was the mortician. All of them lived in the same block and this block has always been called the Coming, Going, and Gone Block . Maurice McKinney arrived next telling us that he had been the owner of a gum factory, and got too stuck up with all his gum. We greeted Eileen Zimmerman Mansfield at the gate, and she said she left Dick and her three sons, and a wonderful secretary’s job. The rest of our class, that we had seen from the watch tower, arrived shortly after Eileen. Now all of our class was in heaven except for three. We thought we had trouble before with the pranksters , but that was nothing compared to what was coming, and I must admit we were really worried after we found who were missing. They were Martin Snider, Ed Smith, and Glen Snyder. They all came together to be admitted into heaven, but St. Peter wouldn’t let them in. We pleaded for them for we wanted our record in heaven to be perfect, but the answer was still no I They went to join Satan. Glen had always liked to drive trucks so he applied for the job of driving the coal truck. After all, they had to have fuel for the fire. Martin was the fireman. He had to shovel all of the coal. My, what a job I Always thought Martin would end up down there. What about Ed? Well, he was the overseer. We all thought that evidently his downfall had come when he was running for Mayor of Royal Center. His motto had been, Free Beer and Wider Sidewalks. He was elected right away. Five years have now passed and the fifty one graduates of 19 2 are all in heaven. You are probably wondering how. Well, Martin, Ed, and Glen received transfers for good behavior. When they arrived, our record was marked as perfect. Now our class is together and happy once more, but there will always be this question in our minds: WHY DID ST. PETER EVER LET US IN?? 58 COMPLIMENTS ? kj «a -a -a a d •« «a -i • ! •« a u -a -a x -d -a -i a «a -i -a j -a -3 .3 -a -u x 3 •« •« hi 4 •« .3 -a -a • hj - j -a -a -a -a a «3 •$ a • •« .3 -a .3 -a -a 3 a 3 i 3 -3 3 '3 -d 3 t «a 3 • ! 3 •« 3 3 3 • 1 3 3 3 3 -a 3 9 9 9 9 9 9 ? v w 9 9 9 « 9 9 9 v 9 H 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 7 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 «9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 M 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 Always The Most For Tour Money Royal Center Indiana A A A A 0 A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A 4 A A A A A A A A 6 A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A 60 ? a d kj -j «a -i 1 'j d a a a « 1 a • -a 3 a «a -a j d -a i -d a «a «a j •a d a a i 3 d • ! -a «i a •$ a «J u ki -a «1 «a -a •« i t «a «3 a i a a -a -a 1 -a a 3 •« -a a a d a «d 1 j -i • j -1. «? w ?
