We espically wish to dedicate it to the memory of the six former students who laqr down their lives that we might continue to enjoy the privileges of this conutry, the greatest democracy on earth. 'Z' A-4 ,yr- 0 CLASS HISTORY In 1938, twenty three papooses started to school in a br1ck structure Eight of the original twenty three are graduating this year, they ares Howard Goodr1ch, Richard Huffman, Gretchen Rhod , Josephine Hines, Maryann Small, Don Pugh, Lee Layer, and Becky Conn They were cute, if I must say so, w1th pig talls and dirty faces As they moved from wigwam to wigwam, they gained more classmates, frimd ships of each other, and also of their beloved teachers In the second grade Henry Jones joined the tr1be Dorothy larvey, hlld red Jackson, and Don Grostefon made a whooplng entrance in the third grade The fourth year brought a large gang of warrirs Junlor Gerlach, Frances Hutch craft, Karlene Bailey, Gerald Herald, Wanda Holcomb, Richard Berkshire, David Henry, and Mary Jo Ropp Anita Gibson entered in the flfth grade Marilyn Hoffman and Howard Dively came in the sixth This made a grand total of twenty five papooses After studylng real hard, they became so brilliant that the teachers de ed to let them enter junior high, Mr Harvey wondered, 'Who let them out9n but after all, you know they were Indians Quite a few more brilliant ones entered Royal Center in the seventh grade, they were Faye Nacke, Phyllis McKinney, Dor1s Musall, Billie Cookerly, Duncan Vansickle, Paul Miller, Alvin Baker, Edlth Carlson, Harold Girard, Patsy Pingle, James Beckner, and Don Hoover The Indians of the class of USGW were joined by two new members, Pat rlcia Grantham, and Peaford Ellison, 1n the eighth grade The next thing whlch happened was the 1nitiation of them as freshmen They were real for sure Indians then with palnt all over thelr faces we acqu1red slxteen new warriors from Jefferson Township Joy Forgey, Mar1lyn Julian, Mable Moore, Martha Sm1th, Mar11yn T1mm0nS, V1rginia Graham, Maryellen Buchanan, Wayne Berry, Robert Cook, Victor Sell, Joann Hoff, Bonn1e Deloris Jones, from Kewanna, and Dale Locks, from Rensselear, also entered In the tenth year the Noble Tr1be brought n1ne new Indians James Ross, Don McMillan, Carolyn Shelhart, Beverly Budd, Norma Piercy, Jay Bentley, Flora Barnett, and Helen Sherrlll Mary Gray came from Deer Creek and Barbara Rails hacx from Clay Township, Miami Countv And oht the smiles that passed in thelr gumor year Fllsl, came the P1855 The Daffy D1lls Then came the Prom a four cour e dlrmcr, flowers, Crepe paper, entertalnment, a swell orchestra, and some very beautlful gowns Now these big papooses had become real big Indians, and you would be weD. aware of the fact if you could have seen them in Home Room, sitting ln a clrcle around a f1re diSCUSS1Hg problems They only had one fault, everyone tried to talk at once Duncan Vanslckle, as presldent, had to lead them through their trylng moments For lnstance, the tlme they couldn't decide on a particular cover for our yearbook, 'The Perls ope' After loslng two and galnlng one new classmate, Pat Wallace, forty-one senlors had learned to shoot, hunt, and flsh They decided to graduate 1n blue caps and gowns Commencement came-Chief Parker handed them their long str1ved for diplomas. 8 1 . . . HGNORS Seferal students won speclal recognltlon and brought honor to our school by taking part 1n varlous contests, either as 1nd1v1duals or on a team Two members of last year's gr duatlng cl ss Non scholarshlps Scholarshl s Robert Swlndell won a State Scho arshlp to Indlana State Teachers College at Terre Haute, Indiana This was one of the two given to Cass County Schools so we feel r1ght proud of Robert and know that he rlghtfully deserved thls honor He was a good all around student ln hlgh school and 15 now maklng good ln college Dorothy Young won the f1FSt of the annual Scholarshlps to be g1ven by the local Llons Club Each year the Llons Club plans to g1ve a scholarshlp of one hundred dollars to some deservlng senlor The w1nner may go to the college or un1vers1ty of h1s cho1ce Dorothy has a pleaslng personallty and was a COHSC19nCi0uS student She was very deservlng of th1S honor placed upon her by the local Llons Club Contests for Ind1v1duals In the reglonal contests at Peru, sponsored by Indlana Un1vers1ty on March 26, the followlng students took part Algebra I Virglnia Oswalt Blllene Herald Latln Marllyn Helmlck N1na McCombs Plane Geometry Florence Coleman Lucllle Barr Those students whose scores were 1n the upper twenty f1V8 percent of scores from all reglonal contests were 1nv1ted to the State Contest, held April 30 on the campus of Indlana Un1vers1ty, Bloomlngton, Indlana Virglnia and Blllene scored sufflclently high to be lnvited to the State Algebra contest, Florence's score 1n g ometry was also h1gh enough to ent1tle her to enter the State Geometry contest V1rg1n1a, Blllene, and Florence were accompanled to the State Contest on Saturday, April 30, by the1r teacher, Mr Newell The glrls gave a very good account of themselves in th1s contest Florence ranked ln the upper one thlrd of over one hundred flfty of the best students from all parts of the state in the Plane Geometry contest, also V1rg1n1a and Blllene ranked ln the upper fifty percent of all students entered in the Algebra contest These glrls worked hard and deserve a lot of credlt for the honors whlch they have attalned for themselves and thelr school 32 Q -. . . n .. Debators' Conference M s Kistler took several of her best debators to the Annual Debators' Conference held at Purdue Uhlversity on December 2 and 3 The following stu dents represented their school at th1s conference Bob Barr, Bob Burley, Jim Moser, Beclq Conn, Faye Nacke, Jane Lov Thelma Harrison, Betty Brant, and Sandra Forgey They reported that they enjoyed the conference very much and learned a lot of helpful things about debating we wish to congratulate these students for the fine debates which they have presented and encourage them to continue the1r fine work along these lines Student Legislative Assembly ana Legislative Assembly at Purdue Uhiversity on December 2 and 3 Norma Barr was the Representative from this school and Billene Herald was the alter nate Virg1nia Graham'was the Senator and Marilyn Hoffman, the alternate When they returned from the assembly they reported on how it operated and gave a dlscussion on some of the b11ls that were proposed These girls learned a lot about how government functions and felt that the assembly was very worth while Judging Teams During the past year Mr Kraning entered several teams made up of his agriculture boys, in various judging contests These boys gain a lot of pract ical experience by taking part in these contests The following boys took part on the varlous teams Vegetable Team Freshman Bob Bu ley, Bob Barr, Paul Tribbett, John Mansfield Sophomore Glen Sell, Bill Kraning, Wayne Berkshire, Dick Mansfield Dairy Team Juniors- Maurice Nice, Bob Shanks, Don Berkshire, Dick Mansfield District- Bill Kraning, Everett La er, Bill Hines, Wayne Berkshire Crops Team: Seniors- Victor Sell, Russell Fry, Howard Goodrich, Wa ne Berry Victor Sell won a first place at the State Corn Show at Lafayette with ten ears of Hybrid Corn. THLETIC -OAFH 'JFAKK5 Jean Kelly Dorothy Harvey Pam Watt as f' Q r 5 YELL LEADERS BASKETBALL The Royal Center basketball team has been unable to win mary games this year. The reasons for losing so mary of our games are: lack of experience in playing varsity ball, lack of size, and, in mary games, poor shooting from the free throw line. The boys have shown marked improvement in each game since the County Tourney and came through with a well played game on Friday evening, Feb. 3, to win over a much taller Monon team by a 116 to 32 score. We know that if the boys continue to play this improved brand of ball they will give a good account of themselves in our remaining games with North Judson and Star City. We may not win these games, as both schools have excellent teams, but they will know they have been in a real basketball game! The fans do not expect the boys to win the Sectional Tourney which begins Feb 23, but they do feel that the team may surprise some of the county teams and even beat one or more of the favorites Coach Sparks has used the following as his starting five' in the last several ball games and they have performed well Vansickle, Goodrich, Julian, Berry, and R Tribbett The other members of the varsity team are Byron Tribbett, Maurice Nice, Cecil Trapp, Bill Kraning, Russell Fry, Leland Patty, Bob Shanks and Henry Jones CStud ent managerl The Bullpups have had a wonderful season! To date, with only two games remaining to be played, they have lost J Q only two games The only teams who were able to beat the locals were Logan Ber ries and the little Badgers of Flora Both of these games were lost by a small margin All other teams fell before the consistent good playing of the Bullpups The boys have size, speed, ag gressiveness, and handle the ball well considering the amount of experience they have had If they will train prop- erly, and learn the fundamentals, play u together, and listen to the coach, we fav may have a good ball team for the next 'NZ ed a will to-win which is important in r N' winmng ball games The regulars on this team are Frushour, Kraning, Snider, Schroder, and Hines Other members of the team are Tatman, L Trapp, Oswalt, Parker, Neher, G Snyder, and Small 36 X 4 .
