The first few days are always hectic, with lost sophomores, dropped books, and even some confused juniors. Seniors were the first to register on Sep- tember 2, followed by the juniors. and then the sophomores. Mr. Manning, machine trades teacher, supervises a student as he uses one of the complicated machines available to boys interested in voca- tional work. Even though there are 78 members on the faculty at Miller, only seven teachers joined the teaching staff this year. With the other teachers, they strive to main- tain a high scholastic standard for Miller. While the new teachers in- struct their classes, they, too, learn Miller's' traditions from their willing students. Many activities fill the school year, from football trips in the fall to the election of Student Council officers in the spring A highlight of the spring semester is the faculty- varsity basketball game. N., Mrs. Rhea leads the mixed choir in a carol for students who listened from -their doorways. Full of Christmas spirit, Mr. Keen's civics class enjoys their cokes and free time. When the Christmas season comes around, Miller joins in with a spirit that sweeps the school. A Christ- mas tree in the main hall was decorated not only with glass ornaments but with paper footballs as well. The last school day of '58 was filled with activi- ties. All the choirs joined to present a religious assembly of songs and readings. Many classes had parties as the choirs caroled in the halls. Glitter- ing Paris skylines and a sidewalk cafe were the setting for An Evening in Paris. Voted on a week earlier by the student body, the favorite naminees. ten from each class. were presented. Directed by Mrs. Mary Virginia Morgan, drama teacher, Stardust was set in the drama de- partment of a university, whose eccentric director persuaded a famous star to perform with his stu- dents. Any senior who wished to be in the play could try out for a part. Many hours of rehearsal were put in by the cast of this three-act comedy. The Senior Council sponsored the play. Stage Managers were Roland Zepata and Sarah Smith. The House Manager was Pinina Norrod. Checking out and straightening the robes are the jobs of the robe committee. Members of the social committee make complete plans for parties. All the money-making projects are the responsibility of the project committee. The stage committee checks the stage before each performance the choir gives to see if it is set properly. At every football game the cheerleaders are there to lead the Miller fans in yells for the team, Marching to the mike, the cheerleaders portray Reds who seek to find the formula to beat the Bucs, only to find that there is none. Miller scored their first touchdown with five min- utes left in the first quarter and never let up the rest of the game. Jeff Bennett scored the first touchdown on a 65 yard scamper around left end. After Sainmie Garza intercepted a pass deep in Mc- Callum territory. Mike Carew carried the ball over from 6 yards out. Carew again scored in the second period on a short pass from Freddie Cuevas that covered 5 yards. Joe Yardas covered a Knight fumble on the kick- off at the 25 and five plays later Cuevas ran eight yards for a Buc score. Miller took ad- vantage of a McCallum fumble on the 6 yard line and sent Bobby Smith the distance in one play. Buc reserves played the last halt' and pushed across two more touchdowns to add to the 33 points scored in the first two periods. Homer Moscorro added the third Miller touch- down with an 11 yard scamper, and the fourth came on a 52 yard blast by Bobby Smith. Smith added 6 more points a few minutes later with a 12 yard touchdown. The Mules pushed across two scores with the help of some Buc penalties and an intercepted pass. Alamo Heights hit pay dirt early in the game on a 78 yard drive that took 18 plays. The intercepted pass came in the last two minutes of the game with Evetts carrying the ball 78 yards for the final score of the game. Scots Hand Bucs First Loss,20-6 The Battlin' Bucs dropped their first game of the season 20-6 to a fine Highland Park team. Miller scored first and fought hard throughout the game but a few bad breaks held the Bucs scoreless the rest of the game. After recovering a Scottie fumble on the 27, Manuel Valdez shot through the left side of the Highland defense and went all the way for the score. Valdez also tried to run the extra point but was halted short of the goal line. The Scots bounced right back to go ahead 7-6 on an intercepted pass by Billy Gannon, who sparked the Highland offense all night. The third quarter put Highland Park ahead by a touchdown on a 64 yard drive that ended with Urquhart scoring from a yard out. It seemed as though the Bucs would tie this game late in the fourth quarter but a Gannon interception stopped Miller 7 yards short of the goal line. The Scots drove the full length of the field and a 41 yard pass play ended the scoring and the game. The second quarter saw Miller come right back to tie the score, and then go on ahead. Mike Carew carried the ball over from the ten, and then Freddie Cuevas ran the extra point which put the Bucs out in front 8-6. A Cuevas to Carew pass early in the third quar- ter resulted in another Buc score from eight yards out. Bobby Smith ran the extra point and provided a 16-6 margin for the Bucs. Waco, trying to get back in the game, traveled 68 yards on the passing of Williamson and scored on a smash up the middle for two yards and a touch- down. Mike Carew, after running a Jeff kickoff back to the 47 yard line. carried the ball to the Pony 1 on the next play from scrimmage. Joe Flores carried the remaining distance for the score. Miller held its own in the first quarter but fell behind in every remaining quarter. The score was tied 9-9 at the end of the first quarter but Miller fell behind 25-17 at the end of the half. By the end of the third quarter, the score was 37-26, and it proved too much for the Bucs to overcome. The Knights' ball control was one of the main reasons for the small score put out by Miller. The 34 points was one of the smallest scored by the Bucs the entire season, Only one Buccaneer, David Bremer. scored in the double figures, while McCal- lum had two players who scored 15 and 14.
