We enjoy a high standard of livmg today. The mayor forces that are responsible for tlus h1gh standard are free- dom, education, machines, and energy. Of these four free- dom and education are the most important, but they are not enough. We must have mach1nes and energy to multiply man's efforts wluch he makes as a result of his freedom and education. Our great advantage in energy over the rest of the world has come particularly from the remarkable development of o1l 1ndustry. 41 I supplies of orl Z . Education IS the hope of youth Youth rs the hope of democracy Therefore democracy depends upon the adequate educa tion of our youth Not only are our schools affected by 011 and gas, but also our homes Today Amer1cans enyoy easier and more comfortable l1ves than ever before Why do we enloy such high standards of l1v1ng? It IS not that we work longer, for we actually work shorter hours than most people IU the rest of the world We do not work harder phys1cally but mach1nes do our work and low cost fuels run these machines Today 1nstead of chopp1ng wood for fire places, our homes are equ1pped w1th central heatmg umts Instead of travel1ng by horse and buggy our nation travels on wheels, run by low cost fuels. Many of the parents of our students are employed by the 011 industry or by concerns closely related to it. Many of our graduates have found yobs w1th 011 firms after fimsh- 1ng the1r educat1on. Durlng the summer months, many of our h1gh school boys fmd work 1n the o1l f1e1ds as rough- necks and many of our hlgh school g1rls work 1n the off1ces of oil companles.
