Applause is the spur of noble minds, and the end aim of weak ones. C.C.Cotton THE MASQUE AND MIME SOCIETY Seeds are sown. Seeds sprout to grow in order to bloom into something -like a tree. As a tree matures it grows upward, learning of the world, it grows inwardly to the depths of understanding of itself, and it grows outwardly, to share its knowledge of life with its surrounding environment. It takes many individual trees to make a forest. Like a collection of trees, there are collections of books. Yearbooks of many years make up a forest. We have planted a seed this year. The tree, the book, is composed of many ideas: ideas and thoughts of other trees, other books, other people. These ideas can be compared to branches of trees. To me a tree represents growth like that of an individual reaching for knowledge. The knowledge is of himself and the surrounding environment. Focusing on the tree as a person we can see many strong, heavy, supporting, large branches among the weak, delicate ones. I see symbolism in a tree. I see emotions and expressiveness in the different branches. The tree has sky framing it: clouds - some dark, some bright and strong, different moods blowing the branches into different shapes. The tree still remains the same. I look upon the trees as they exist in the forest, but when taken separately, each is unique and individual. Each tree has roots which extend into depths of understanding. The past is interwoven in the roots which nourish. Roots may not be seen, but they support the tree, sustain it. The roots of this book are very special individuals to whom I would like to extend my sincere thanks. I would like to especially acknowledge the fantastic staff with whom I had the opportunity to work. There are a few particular individuals whom I would like to thank separately. They are Mr. Mario Conforti, our advisor, and the editors. I would like to recognize many real friends from whom we received support lthanks mom and dadl. These people are all a part of the forest. Branches are values and principles that keep you balanced. Ideas, or branches will sway or change with growth. As with roots, branches will sway or change with growth. As with roots, branches nurture the tree. Branches extend toward others and sometimes become intermingled. Through reaching and grasping they support one another. From support come understanding and knowledge. If you look closely you will see heavy supporting branches which are strong, some that are weak, and some that are broken off. There are also new branchesfideas growing, forming - taking shape. A tree has a life during which it is growing. It extends its branches higher if its roots grow deeper and among others, gaining strength and courage toigrow, to reach up. The reaching of the individual is a personal growth toward a goal which only he can perceive. Look at the tree. The change is continuous, but always the tree will be itself, it never can be anything else. I would like to think of myself as a tree. I love every branch, every dark and bright cloud. Every part has a unique beauty. Many have climbed the tree. Some have carved in it, leaving a mark eternally. Some have brushed by it, others have just kept walking, not stopping to gaze or touch it. But everything and everyone has affected the growth of this tree. The results have been the birth of new branches, the growth in strength of smaller branches -the tree has grown. It would be uncaring not to mention the loss of many branches, or enduring the worst storms. But the tree, the book, I, you, we-all-have kept the faith in our ability to grow and today we are standing up strong. 280 Iowa, Kris-H
