L CLASS or' 1942 THE CUSTODIANS W7 pafr1cA W Connofef HLAD CUSTODIAN Who keeps our home fires burning, who sweeps the cobvwebs from the ceilings, who cleans the floors and does needed repair work, who mows the lawn in Spring and shovels the snow in Winter, in short, who keeps the wheels of our school running smoothly? There are at least six reasons why Memorial IS a success their names are on this page The custodians come early in the morning, too early for most of us, and leave late 1n the day Suppose we start with the chief Mr Patrick M Connolly better known a P M to all the teachers, IS the Chief Custod1an His respons1b1l1ty IS great and hlS record IH the Boston school system IS excellent He owes h1s pop ular1ty among the teachers to h1s pleasant personality and razor sharp Wlt H speaks with the 1nv1nc1ble comb1nat1on of truth and courtesy He has nothing but pra1se for all and wise counsel for those who seek lf He IS promment 1n the affa1rs of Jlmaica Plain, in CIVIC, social, financul and charitable organ1zat1ons He IS 1 good c1t1zen Mr William B Gately IS the ASSISISHI Head Custod1an of the school H acts as the foreman of the other assistant custod1ans Called B1ll by all the faculty members, Mr Gately IS an ardent sports enthusiast His genial sm1le alone 15 sufficient reason for h1s popularity Mr Hugh Byrne entered when the school was bu1lt, away back 1n the 1970 s He has a good 1dea of the horrors of wir, for he was serving on the IHIDC lfutr U S S Shawmut during the W orld War Mr Byrne is the chief of thc helting unit 1n the school Mr Hector Padden IS another charter member He must work While the ex ery lunch period on h1S tour of duty One would hardly know that he IS about, but h1S efl'ic1ency and earnestness 1mpress all the students as const1tut1ng him as a model worker Mr Padden reads much, takes an mterest in baseball and loves to relavt with his pipe 'Vlr Nhchael J Gannon IS another who makes If hor for us He, too, works on the bo1lers He IS well informed and IS an mttresting conwersa tionalist He IS considered an authority on Irish h1story, and can alvx ays teach lt 1f h1s bo1lers get too hot for hm Nlr Edward Fay just couldn t break avmy from Memorial He is an alumnus of the school as well as being assistant custod1an He IS the latest add1t1on to the custod1an staff We can at least see for ourselxes that one of our graduates has made good llRSlN ROW SI LOXD ROW llLGl'l BX Rxl IDW XRD IAY HIC FOR PXUDIN HR l'XlRlCl'x N1 CONNOIIY XIICHXII GXNNON Head Custodian V.
