'rx-11: BOSTONIAN yea, KOOL C1-HSS OF 1942 HOCKEY COACH I-lampered bv a lack of practice and inexperi cnced substitutes Roxbury Memorial s hockey sextet suffered a disastrous series of setbacks broken only by a victory over Dorchester Although the boys lacked a heavy scoring punch they produced some fine individual play The reverses were due mainly to the lack of co ordination in the passing attack George Worley Dan Radiches Henry DeStefano and Eddie Burke were the veterans who returned to form the nucleus of the team Other mem bers of the team are Mathews the goalie Apkarian ONc1l Fitzgerald Daly Ducie Crowley Baggett and Clancy When the boys stepped out on the Garden surface to oppose Latin school it was the first time that they were on the ice as a unit Our boys were cleanly outplayed from start to finish but did not give up Mr Campbell our great coach kept them husthng all the time The final score was 6 0 in favor of Latin Facing in Dorchester a rival which was DOI to be feared as much as the others Coach Campbell resorted to radical means to gain a place in the victory column This strategy proved to be very successful as the Memorial sextet banged out a thrilling 3 2 s ictory After John Fitzgerald drove the puck home Dorchester took over a short lived 2 1 lead From here on the Memorialites put o power play after power play Our pucksters dented the strings twice Both successes were hand drnes from the blue line with Waters and Captain DeStefano doing the scoring Fighting against a 2 0 deficit at tne end of the first period the Memorial and John Fitzgerald who whistled home two shots whxch knotted the score at 2 2 The tired play ers were finally overpowered and Trade scored four quick last period goals Don Matthews did some hne goal tending but he as well as the other members of th team was overcome by the sheer power of the oppo nents After that the team fell victim to Mechanics English and Commerce bringing to a close a hardly successful season Although the boys only won a single game they were doing their best at all times They showed good sports manshxp and their courage was admired by their foes The lettermcn are Samuel Apkarian ames Baggett Fdward Burke ohn Clancy 'Vl1chaelCrowley George Daly Edward Ducle Harry DeStefano John Fitzgerald Don Mathews Edward 0NlLll Daniel Radiches Arthur W'1ters George Worley STINIOR5 S XIIxARl'XN N1 CRONXLLY I DUCII I BLRlxl H DLSTIIHANO G IJAIY G-90 109 Wa A L f , . , .4 . 1 . , - 9 7 , . THE BOSTONIAN ea, L7 CLASS or 1942 TRACK 3600105 Cl 171,75 COACH The Roxbury Nflcmorlll Hlgh trackstcrs ltd by that able leader Captam Harx ey Steinberg brought a successful season to a close by takmg a fourth place ln the Reglmtntals We were best fortlfied ln C1155 A vuth Chet Arnold Rxchard Lawson Ken Averett and Herbert Dulmm carry mg the Green md Gold Chet Arnold 1nd Dxck Lm son nn the same day prouded us w1th the blg gest thrxlls of the year It took place m the trl meet between Englxsh Dor chester and Memorlal Chet Arnold one of the Memorlal speedsters took the lead m the last lap of the 600 from the Engllsh Hlgh captam From there on Chet was 1n the lead and won the event handlly Dxck Lawson fought an Englxsh runner all the way down the stretch m t e 300 and gamed a t1e 1n a thrxllxng duel The relay team composed of Chet Arnold Dlck Lawson Herb Dulman Ken Averett and Dlck emotte showed themsely es to good adyantage In Class B the leadlng trackster was Captaxn Hary ey Stemberg who was always a hustlmg and dependable runner At ey erv meet Harvey took first place 1n the broadjump moreox er he almost repelted thus ln the 50 yard dash comlng ln hrst ln four out of flye races Another great S0 yard mln IS Paul Tuler who showed himself to good ad vantage at thus dlstance Gad Stansnl ran the grxndmg 300 and George lmentals and had a very successful year Edward Hurwntz was contmually placmg m the hurdles The Class B relay team was composed of leadoff man Hary ey Steinberg Gad Stansll George Berkowltz and Paul Tuler They showed plenty of pep and gate the fans many thrllls throughout the year Classes C md D showed many future stars on the way up Most outstand mg of these IS Alfred Nlcholson the great shotputter Others are jack Cohen Mel Levy and Bern Blankenberg These boys w1ll haxe thexr chance to prove themsely es ln future years Lettermen Aram1on Ayerett Berkowltz Blankenberg Block Cohen Craxgwell Dulman Duchaney Dunn Gray emotte Lawson Levey Mlller lN1cholson Rosenbloom Ruttenberg Stennberg Capt Stansxl Tuler Manager Portman SPNIORS IXXX SGW XX SCOTT G BFRROXXITZ IPNIOTTL H STIINBI RG l N1 XRGOSIXN DLNN Captan C QT-XNSIL DLLN1-KN P TLLLIR W PORTVXN K XXPRITT X XXI N Nlanxter C190 y aa 111 l'.
